Does anyone seem to have a specific cooler they recommend that works well with the stand-pegs of the 9262? I already have one, but it may just barely fit the one I have right now, and this is going to be my baby, so I might spend a bit of extra coin to keep it the coolest it can be.

get the zalman NC2000 mate. its the best cooler for this lappy. im using it currently and it keeps the temps down to a cool level. it is also big enough to accomodate the 9262

Will do dazzyd. Curious, do you know your temperatures for the GPU and such?

I am designing and building one. The initial design is 1/8" Aluminum and the air vents are strategically placed for the D901C. It uses (4) 60mm Vantec Stealth fans which if I remember right are 24 cfm each and is powered by its own outlet PS.

Problem is it is all custom built so it is about twice what a Zalman is. Before anyone posts about price... this is a specialized piece of kit for a specialized purpose. I already know it is expensive, that is why I posted that. It easily has 3 times the airflow of the Zalmon and it is directly where you need it.

Well that's less than what I'd expect for something custom! Are you going to provide "before and after" temps? I'm very interested!

I built a prototype for a customer with an old Executioner (570) that looked like this:

I will stress a prototype built in my own shop. The actual ones are done at a machine shop. To answer your question, I posted in my forum to the person who got the prototype to throw up some temperatures. I will definitely post the temps when I get them. I used to actually sell the Zalman and the price I was paying for them was right at the point where custom started to make sense.

So when is the 9262's cooler available do you estimate? Could I buy one without having to buy a KNB?

The Executioner SR/SRX/MX are being done right now, so I would guess based on how long that took... end of September. Once they are done once, I will have inventory of them and re manufacturing them is always easier because all the machines are programmed and all they have to do is load it and push a button. I could sell a few to non KNB people. I say a few because obviously some of these threads have thousands of hits and I would have to restructure to supply a product in significant volume.

I don't think this is a good fit because the Stealth fans are rather thick. That means the cooler is lifted up quite a bit. It's awesome in that it gets great airflow, not so awesome in that I originally designed these for the Executioner and had in mind people O.C.'ing their CPU and GPU's like maniacs (I had a 3.7 Ghz x9000 O.C. and I was like, "Ummmm, that's alittle high don't you think?") I wanted the most cooling ie: airflow. :(

hey dazzyd, my gpu temps hit around 68-72 when i'm gaming with the nc-2000 below my 9262, and fans left to auto.. is it because i din't turn the fans to max or is it just the heat near the equator that's frying everything..??

those are some pretty amazingly good temps.

As long as your temps are under 90C there is nothing to be worried about.

Ambient and room temperatures may vary results with notebook cooler, but they still help.

Most people use, well, not really sure about most, but it is a really good idea to use max fans (Function+1) while gaming. It makes a big difference in temps.

I have the Zalman [for the cottage] and a Cryo LX for home. The Cryo has a fold hinge for travel, meaning more thickness due to folding, but less width. Has two large Fans, and five usb ports. Used with a D901C, while the Zalman is quite nice, I think the Cryo LX cools better.... Its really nice!!! www.nzxt.com

hey thanks man, that Cryo LX looks pretty sweet, and it appears that the fans are on the back-end of the cooler, just like the 9262. Or am I seeing it wrong?

As I stated, the Zalman is nice. You can't go wrong with it.

The Cryo LX uses a fairly large perforated aluminum box to enclose the fans on the bottom side, rather than using plastic parts. Very solid extruded aluminum sections are used for the main deck. I can't feel flex while applying moderate force on the cooling surface. Non-slip pads on the resting surface is very generous. It is a very nice design with about 1/2" additional surface sticking out beyond each side of a centered D901C [9262] Laptop.

As to temps. I updated to the 8800's in SLI from the 7950's, and then changed from a X6800 to a E8400. And replaced the boot drive with a Supertalent 120 SSD. So heat has vanished from the keyboard surface due to hardware changes mostly... With the Cryo LX however, I actually feel some air flow around the Laptop, that I don't notice with the Zalman. As to noise, I always run the Laptop on high, so I really can't hear either Cooler...

Changed the Video Drivers back to the Sager posted 175.97 and hit a new high of 14,284 on 3dMark06 for this Laptop.

Wow, that's the highest score I've seen yet for 3DMark06 on a laptop.. I wonder if the SSD has anything to do with it. I wouldn't think so.

Anyway, I think I'll get the Cryo LX because of the fan placement, mostly.

I tried the 177.79 drivers, but they hang in the 3dMark06 test and caused BSOD and reboots when playing DVD's, and didn't play nice with MaxIm DL [Astrophotography Software]. Strange...
The 175.97 seems stable and allows the Nvidia PhysX to enable the GeForce PhysX setting, while bumping my 3dMark06 score about 16 points. While this is much to do about nothing sounding; the point is that I'm working towards having as stable a system as possible. So I try to watch for the little weird things that might happen while using this Laptop. At the same time I am trying to keep it as current as possible while still operating in the XP world. I know it's old school, but again it's a pretty stable operating system...

I have the test results from my customer on the prototype "Hurricane" cooler for the Executioner / 570U system.

    All results are in Celcius.
    The test:
3DMark06's Deep Freeze (HDR lighting and SM3.0), looped for 1 hour at 1680x1050, 4xAA.

With stock factory bottom plate and no cooler:
    Core 1: 49
    Core 2: 49
    ACPI Zone: 53

    GPU: 62.4
    HDD: 44

With K|N modified bottom plate and custom cooler running:
    Core 1: 36
    Core 2: 36
    APCI Zone: 51

    GPU: 51.6
    HDD: 32

Stressing the system by looping Deep Freeze for an hour shows a huge difference in the CPU & GPU temps as well as the hard drive.

    The component temperature differences:
    CPU: -13 C / -24 F
    ACPI Zone: -2 C / -4 F
    GPU: -11 C / -20 F
    HDD: -12 C / -22 F

    That's interesting!

    • How does the SSD perform?
    • Did it reduce boot times?
    • Have you installed other software on the SSD?
    • Do this applications start faster now?
    • How about safety, do you have data on the SSD?

    @dazzyd, yes WinXP sp3. Bios oc 650/950/1470.

@hanko panko. I'm not a patient person, especially when repairing or working through Software issues. The reboots drive me nuts.
That said, the boot times for WinXP are very comfortable now. Probably 30 to 40% faster by feel, haven't clocked any times.
Because I have read online allot of complaints about these drives failing, I use the 2nd and 3rd drives for critical data, and have backed up to a external drive. It's all about boot up for me. I also have a 16gb PCExpressCard handy for quick 2nd backup of critical files. I know that I will be frustrated if the drive fails, but for now the experiment seems worth it. I pop on an off this Laptop frequently...
I've been playing The Witcher in 1920x1200 resolution. There was excessive load times with the 7200 sata II Seagate drive that I had. Now with the SSD, it's very playable. There is a delay saving games to disks, but the Game had some delays in this respect before. If I have a choice between faster saves or faster boot, I'll take the faster boot every time.
The online indication is the pricing will drop by Christmas. If it does drop to about $300 to $400, I would consider this a nice drive. At $600, it's a bit pricey. I bought to try out, because I also spec computer equipment for our engineering department.

General BTW, in using a NexStar SX HHD Enclosure and Meade and Orion CCD Cameras [AstroPhoto] with the 9262 USB ports, I have found that this Laptop has issues with the power supplied to these ports. Testing with other Laptops, I find no issues in reading the CCD Cameras or external hard drives. But with the 9262, I use a remote powered USB device for reading the CCD Cameras and have to check combinations [the external kit uses two USB cables] of the two cables to the four USB ports available. Plugging in the USB for the USB Cordless Optical can drop the read from the external drive.
I have to assume the Clevo played it close with the USB power output....

If the mods have banned someone, they have a good reason for doing so (others may not agree, had they been mods, that they would have done the same thing, but the mods do not act irrationally); also, they will not disclose the reason(s) - that is strictly a matter between the mods and the person banned. Finally, a ban isn't necessarily forever, it may be for just a set number of days, so KN may very well be back.

That being said, I'm not trying to prevent anyone from expressing their view of the worth of KN's posts to the forum, who knows, it may soften a too hard heart? However, don't expect the mods to tell you what happened, and don't expect the mods to change their minds just because a banned member gets a vote of approval from other members - for all we know there may have been something else going on behind the scenes that none of us are privy to.

WHICH IS WAY HOT.. now its BELOW 40.... but the model of HDD i have is known to be hot. its a 160 7200 from last year. THey were known to run a lil hot. Anywya... it brings cpu temps and gpu temps down a solid 5 degrees as well. which is a decent diff.

Most any laptop should be able to get by without one. It mostly depends on the laptop and the environment you are using it in. If your laptop feels uncomfortably warm to the touch in the keyboard/palm area, then I would get one to keep it cooler and help extend it's life. A cooler laptop is happy laptop. Don't forget to keep vents and fans clean as well. A good cooler is worthless if your laptop's air flow is inhibited by dust and dirt.

A subtle advantage is that the coolers typically lift and angle the Laptop to a better angle for your wrists to rest on, while cooling at the same time...

@dazzyd, I hate when I screw up. Oc is 630/950/1470, not 650 as I had typed. I stopped at these numbers because 3dMark06 began to hang on tests. I now think the hangs were due to updating the Video Driver or some other processes that were installed, and not because of the overclocking.

I scrubbed Drivers and did some deep cleaning a week ago and then reinstalled the older 175.97 video drivers. And for some reason decided to retry the test - it runs fine now and faster. Not sure why.
The Video Bios has the voltage set a 1.05v. Most of the information that I picked up for the flashing came from GangStaOne [thanks]. PM him for help if you need it. He is very helpful...

I grew up with DOS, so I am comfortable working with the black/white screens and DOS commands and Batch files. So working through flash tests was fine at first, but then gets pretty boring. So I'm sure with patience, a little more can be milked out of these cards... But to what point? The next processor or Video Card will leap frog the current speeds....

Frankly I'm going to pick up a Q9650 when it is cost effective and install two new Seagate 320 gb drives. Zoomfly had them online for $166.99.
