I am upgrading my 9262 currently with a E8400 Dual-Core Processor to a new Q9650 3.0GHz Quad-Core on a configuration running XP Pro (32bit). Will the OS recognize a CPU upgrade from 2 to 4 cores and install/ configure its self in whatever way needed to use all 4 cores, or will I need to re-install the OS to use the new CPU?

I remember in the good old days of the Pentium 4, when I upgraded my Sager with a newer Hyper threading CPU, I had to re-install XP because the OS would not recognize the new second working thread.

Not sure now if with going from 2 to 4 cores, its the same issue or not.

Thank you very much in advance for your input! :)

I think you may need a bios update, but as far as the OS, I am unsure.

As long as you have sp3 installed it should be optimized automatically for multicore support. Anything before that and you will have to do it yourself. Nas ghost is correct though, a Q9650 does require a bios update.
