So after an earlier thread about not being able to get the SPDIF out working on my 9262, it now functions. I've got digital coax plugged in to an RCA jack to mono plug adapter, which then plugs in to the SPDIF out on the laptop. This cable then runs to the digital coax input on my Logitech Z 5500's. Unfortunately, I can't get true 5.1 surround as it stands. The rear speakers are just a doubling of the front speakers. Does anyone else have any experience with this? I don't think it's the cable or adapters, as I'm getting a good-quality signal. I'm guessing there's some reason the laptop's audio hardware is not properly recognizing the rear-channel portion of any 5.1 stream I try to use.

Hi Madcellist. Go to the RealTek HD Audio Manager in the control panel, then to the "Audio I/O" tab. Make sure your speaker configuration is set to what you are trying to output to. Under the "Digital" section click the little wrench icon and make sure the SPDIF settings are correct to deliver what your AC3 decoder can handle. There are other options that you can adjust but that should get you started. Oh, and here is a link to the RealTek HD Audio Manager manual. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, maaron. Unfortunately, my Realtek HD Audio Manager looks nothing like the one in the manual. I think that may be the XP version. I also don't have an "Audio I/O" tab or a wrench icon under the Digital section. I'm reinstalling the driver now to see what happens. Will update in a few minutes.
Edit: I notice my sig lists that I have xp 32 bit on this machine still. Forgot to update that. I have Vista 32 bit now. -
Hi Madcellist. Sorry to hear that my advise didn't help. This model uses the Realtek ALC655 HD Audio chipset and to my knowledge the Vista version of the software shouldn't be all that far removed from its XP sibling. Reinstalling with the newest HD audio drivers is a good idea however, so proceed with that step. At any rate there should be an Audio I/O control section in there somewhere. Also make sure to check you Mixer settings in the HD Audio control panel as well. Hope you get this set to your taste, I know how frustrating it can be. Good Luck.

Update: No dice on reinstalling the driver. I've got every option I can find set to 5.1 in Vista and the Realtek HD Audio Manager set to 5.1 speakers and digital output. When running a 6-channel audio test file, the rear speakers are played very quietly in front right and left. When playing a movie with Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 streams, the rear channels are just a duplicate of the front. ARGH!

Sorry to hear that. Well theres only so much you can do on your own of course. If the changes that you are making aren't altering the behavior of the hardware the way they are indeed supposed to, especially after reinstalling the drivers, then there may be a legitimate hardware issue present. My advised at this point would be to contact your Tech Support and jump through their hoops to see if they can get it corrected for you over the phone. If not then you may indeed have a hardware issue. It might be the AC3 decoder that is causing the problem as well. I'd look into that as too.

Here are two screen captures of what my audio manager looks like. The "Device Advanced Settings" link just lets me enable all stereo connections on the laptop as line-in. Nothing related to S/PDIF there.

Looking at the pics I can see what you mean. The whole setup appears to be somewhat simplified in comparison to the XP version. From what I can see you have it set up correctly. At this point I'd advise you to contact your tech support company or contact Sager directly, unless that would breech some sort of protocol with your tech support team. Hopefully they can get you up and working or get you an RMA if need be.
