ok I had to replace my config of 3 128ssd's so now i went with the 3 320 7200's. that said I went with raid 5 because i thought it was best combination of speed and backup. Would love to hear thoughts. Also wondering under this configuration how much space I will have available to use.......
thanks in advance

Take a look at this chart http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/perf/raid/levels/comp.htm
It shows the pros and cons of most RAID levels. 3 x 320GB drives in RAID 5 will give you 640GB of storage. It is arguable the best combination of speed and backup however because of the parity calculations in RAID 5 you will generally find that RAID 5 beats RAID 1 on read performance but 1 beats 5 on write performance. -
RAID 5 reduces the total capacity by about 1 disk, so you should have a total of ~ 640. Excellent setup though, that is more space than my three computers combined

or you can do what i do. raid 0 on first two drives and independant on 3rd drive. that way you get the speed of raid 0 with the protection of the independant 3rd drive to backup the important files. if the raid array fails your saved work is on the 3rd drive. if the 3rd drive fails your saved work is on the raid array.
you will also have the full 1 terrabyte of storage depending on how you back up things. the annoying thing is the manual backup and restore but i think it is worth the trade off. -
