    I want to configure my 9262 (w/ 8Gigs of RAM on board) with Windows Server2003 SP2 R2 and I have a few questions. I refuse to use Vista (any flavor of it to use the full memory capacity).

    Server2003 SP2 R2 is a 32bit Operating System but supposedly it supports 32Gigs of RAM. Can anyone explain to me how this is possible? I was under the impression that natively, all 32bit OSes have a 4GB maximum RAM limit. If this is not true, why was XP 32bit never fitted with such a feature to increase its 4GB limit?

    Also, I am under the impression most drivers for XP 32bit work with Server2003 SP2 R2, including most Nvidia Video Drivers. Is this correct? And is it possible to install DirectX/NET Framework 3.5, etc.? And what about multimedia applications such as BluRay disks playback etc?

    Thanks for input! :)

    I use my own modified version TinyVista (I customized my Vista Ultimate with vLite... copying what TinyVista had) .... works awesome... feels like XP. :)

    But I still am dual-booting, making XP Pro my primary OS.

    Only the Enterprise version of the 32-bit version of Server 2003 will accomodate up to 32GB of RAM, as mentioned in the Wikipedia Server 2003 article.

    This is accomplished on a 32-bit operating system using Physical Address Extensions (" PAE"), which, as stated in the Wikipedia PAE article:

    Sorry for my ignorance but, According to Microsoft, to enable PAE for example on XP, the folloing line needs to be addeded to the boot.ini file:
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)
    \WINNT="Windows ???? Datacenter Server" /PAE /basevideo /sos

    However my boot.ini on my current XP install reads:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=0
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    So, where would the extra line of code actually go? I see "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS" more than once and have no idea what should go where... what I do know is one mistake here and the computer will never boot again.

    and... the main reason for my interest of using my 9262 w/ Windows Server 2003 R is that its generally faster than XP, and of course, it supports up to 32Gb of RAM even though being a 32bit OS.

    and no rc candidate is listed on that list at 32 gigs, only windows 2000 datacenter and windows 2003 enterprise edition.

    I believe under XP Pro, the correct Boot.ini with PAE switch enabled should look something like this:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /PAE

    yes, that's how it's suppose to look, but it still wont go higher than 3 gigs in xp.... see it..maybe...use it..nope.

    edit: and what ever happen with your qx9650 in the np9262?

    Up and running at 3.2GHz flawlessly. Problematic at anything higher than that... cooling, voltage... not sure nor time to investigate the matter. Core i7 is next whenever (if) Clevo ever makes a laptop that takes it :)

    did you run a 3dmark and vantage score at that clock yet??

    Windows Web Server 2008 offers the following features and capabilities:

    *

    Support for 32 GB of RAM (4 GB on 32-bit systems)
    *

    Support for up to four multi-core processors

    Would I assume (correctly or incorrectly) that Server 2008 will me slower and more cumbersome than Server 2003 (just live Vista)?

    Run a 3dmark and vantage score at 3.2Ghz but want to do it again as I have been tweaking the OS for maximum performance. Also tried to run at 3.4GHz and once in a while system tends to hang and i have not figured out why... Ive managed to run the laptop for horus in a row at 3.4GHz without a problem, but other times it freezes within minutes. Runnig a 3dmark at 3.4GHz usually hangs the system... probably voltage as temperatures (at least the ones reported) are all within normal values even under load. Im using CPUCooL to change multiplier and check for temps.

    they server 2008 is the fastest server yet. (speculation of course)

    cool. have you tried cyrstalcpuid for changing the multiplier & voltage?

    and it looks like im going to go ahead and get one of these chips then.

    Yes, just started fiddling around with cyrstalcpuid a few days ago and am starting to test it. Im not sure is there a limitation on the external power supply itself when pushing up the CPU's speed... the PS makes a aloud electronic wheezing noise when the processor is under load...

    it also makes that noise when under load of your vga cards as well.

    you only have 220 watts to work with. i would only run 3.4, but keep same voltage. or maybe even 3.3ghz since cystal does half points.
    and can you try this...run 3dmark for about 10 secondes and then stopp it. tell me the max fps you see when it starts climbing in to the 80's and up.

    do you have any screen shoys of your setup running at 3.2?

    If you want something stable, fast and that is enterprise ready with lots of memory, why not use Windows Workstation 2008 :)
    It's a Windows Server 2008 with a minimum amount of Roles & Features. The reviews give it 10-14% faster than a Vista.
    In addition, you can run Hyper-V on it (requires the x64 version).

    Check www.win2008workstation.com or use google to info lots more info.
