I've been going back and forth between the 5793 and the 9262 but have been leaning more to the 9262 because of the expandability/upgradability. so in trying to configure the 9262 and keep the price down, my question is in regards to configuring it with just one HD - 320gig - in that when I'm ready to add more drives is it as simple as plopping it in and formatting etc or is there more hardware needed?
thanks all

Yes,it's as simple as that.I had a only one 120GB.Then bought a 320GB and just put it and format it.
-
yup, it's that simple. if you want RAID, then it's a li'l bit more involved, but only a little.
you can also install the RAM yourself to save some money, but xoticpc and PNB have pretty good deals on RAM as it is.
while you're at it, you can also get one with a single gpu and go sli on your own to save even more money.
heck, might as well buy a barebone and do everything yourself. -
Yea... i only got one 160GB... 4GB ram and one 7950 cuz i kept that money in a safe place cuz im putting in 4GB TWO 9800s (hopefully) and the q9550 in an a month or two... then im done with upgrades for this baby...

my reasons for asking as i was previously thinking of going with the 5793 but after looking over the specs of the 9262 and seeing how upgradeable it is, i can see this unit lasting me a lot longer than the 5793. I tend to keep things for a longer than normal time - my current laptop is 5 years old and my desktop is at least 7 but with both i was able to do upgrades along the way stretching their lifetime.
Whats everyone's opinion on how much longer this model will be available for purchase once the new line is available. Do you think they will still sell them for a bit or simply drop them altogether ? -

The Sager NP9262 will not be affected by the release of the new Centrino 2 platform (Montevina).
It will be around for quite a while -
SLI 8800M GTX is a little better than a 4850 or 9800 GTX, so you should have no problems hanging on to this system for a while
-
-
Yea, it`s the reason I got myself a 8800M GTX SLI setup too
-
get the 9262 max out the specs and have fun for 3 years least thats what im doing
-
-
o im sorry that im 15 and have more money then u

Stop giving your generation a bad rap -
Secondly, unless you're a certifiable genius - in which case you wouldn't be wasting time around here - I rather doubt if your summer odd-jobs have generated sufficient income at the age of 15 to provide for such extravagant expenditures; ergo, the money you think is "yours" is really just funds your parents earned and have given to you as a gift - another name for charity. Of course, since I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, I will not accuse you of being the lowest of the low - a Paris Hilton trust fund baby.
So, at the end of the day, it's nice that your parents have the kind of money that permits them to buy such an expensive computer for you to use. That's nice, because I have a three y.o. daughter and I want to give her the best I can, so it warms the ****les of my heart to see other parents doing the same.
P.S., this is just 'cause I want to see if it works, it is NOT meant as some childish commentary or rejoinder to your statement:

I dnt know why I hate these type of guys.
Well done shyster,I was itching to add somehting like that
-
alright, i am bored so i did some little math. assuming 1) you got $20K from work, 2) you earned $15/hr, 3) you work full time in summer and part time for winter break, 4) you are 15 years old, and 5) you are taking regular education.
summer break of middle school = roughly 60 days
winter break = 14 days
$20000/15hrs = 1333hrs
eq1) for a single summer: assuming you worked as full time 4 days a week and 7 hrs a day. that's 4days*7hrs*8 weeks = 224hrs.
eq2) for a single winter: assuming you worked as part-time 3 days a week and 3 hrs a day. that's 3days*3hrs*2weeks = 18hrs.
eq1+eq2 =>you've worked 242 hours a year.
eq3) 1333hrs/242hrs per year = 5.5 years.
eq4) 15 years old - 5.8 years = 9.5 years old.
So, someone hired you for $15/hrs when you are 9 years old?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
LOL Nirvana, give him a break, he needs to grow up before buying a laptop.
And it`s more like this :
5 days a week, 8 hours a day =40 hours/week=> 320 h/summer.
3 days a week, 4 hours a day =12 hours/week=> 24 h/winter
=>total 354h/year
20 000$/15%per hour= 1333 hours
1333/354=3.76
15-3.76=11.24 years old.
SO he was hired when he was studying abcdees -

Don`t we all?
I wish people would`ve hired me at 9.2/11.24 years, I would`ve had 47610/62445 $ -
That's poor Oic there in the middle...
He's getting a proper thrashing. Especially with comments like these:

Wow,you guys are geniuses.
-
I guess nobody notice that both Nirvana and I got the answers wrong in the "winter" part.
I am a misunderstood genius indeed -
I noticed nirvanas mistake but not yours, as you just got the addition wrong not the initial multiplication. Besides, I just skim read yours due to it just being a reworking of nirvanas.
-
Well, I have a defense : it`s 5:43 AM here, haven`t slept,and I will head for the US in a long 24 h trip...
-
OK, I'll let you off
...It's 3.44am here, so I'm off to bed...night
-
my bad. solution fixed. still starting at 9 years old however.
-
Actually, it's even worse than what you folks have already calculated, because you forgot to take income and payroll taxes into account. Now, given that Canada has a progressive marginal tax bracket system, and that I don't know how much other income our 9 y.o. millionaire may have had to report as taxable income (parents occasionally do use minor children as tax shelters
), I didn't do the math or try to come up with an accurate estimate of his effective tax rate; however, I'm guessing that 10% - taking into account income taxes, which would have been very small, and payroll taxes, which would have been much bigger because payroll taxes generally aren't set on a progressive rate schedule - would be a reasonable estimate.
So, if anyone really wants to take a stab at the maths, assume that our redoubtable millionaire has also been paying 10% of his gross pay from each paycheck in Canadian taxes. I'm guessing that has him starting somewheres in his eighth year instead of his ninth. -
If I had half the legal knowledge you have Shyster, I`d be ruling the world now.
-
i just got out of my econ-230 class, and I AM NOT gonna look back! ever!

It's not economic, anyway. It's psychological. He didn't earn that money. He inherited it. Someone handed it to him without strings attached. It's created an overinflated sense of self-importance and entitlement.
-
Ok,no more talk about him. A 3rd thread was already closed.
Let`s keep it civilised peeps. -

Serinity now. Serinity now. -
Speaking of which - considering what hard drives can be had for these days from the likes of Frys, Newegg, etc..., it seems to me that it makes more sense to order the NP9262 with one, or even no, hard drives and then add the additional drives yourself. Granted, you're not saving hundreds of dollars, but from the looks of it, you might be saving $70 to $80 on two drives combined.
-
Single HDD config : as Nirvana pointed out : The 256GB Samsung SSD is the fastest one yet. -
hey thanks everyone I shut down my lappy last night after my last post and WOW ! Glad others finally said things to put this kid to bed. Anyway, yes getting back to my original question, I'll probably go with the 320 and buy the other HD's through Newegg or somewhere else.
