Greetings ladies and gents, my old Sager 9262 has recently bit the dust and is waiting to be sent in to get RMA'd. However this happened right before I headed out to sea which, needless to say, has kinda put a kink in my portable gaming awesomeness. I've been trying to get some research done as to which laptop offers more bang for the buck and I can't really seem to be able to pin anything down, so I turn to you guys. Does anyone know which one offers superior performance, the 9280 or the 9850? The 9280 appears to have a serious processor advantage while the 9850 obviously has the SLI advantage.
Thanks for your time!

9850 will beat the 9280 hands down in gaming... also you may want to take a look at the Alienware M17x...
-
But the D900F (or 9280, if you wish) will be top dog with everything else - including games that are more cpu dependent. yes, there are quite a few of those.

Single card options seem to be more stable than the dual card solutions in laptops.. or so it has been described to me..
I like the real i7.. or the desktop i7 in a laptop.. the 280m.. has a lot of horse power...
The 18.4 inch screen with a sub woofer.. is a better mutlimedia experience..
The D900F for work.. or things other than gaming will chew up the QX..
You will win either way.. it really depends on what you are going to do with the laptop beyond gaming and your skill level.. if you want to over clock.. the D900F.. if you are going to use it for gaming and medium / heavy work load the QX would be fine.. if you are encoding HD video the i7..
I have a 18.4 inch screen.. I will never go back.. to anything else.. the sub woofer for sound.. the 16:9 ratio shows much larger.. we read right to left.. not up to down.. so the expance of the view is fantastic..
But.. the i7.. is an i7... and is the best thing you can buy.. I dont know how else to say it...
Look at the bright side.. you win either way..
Be well, JW
I forgot to mention.. if you are a larger person and use a laptop in your lap.. then you would be ok with an 18 inch screen.. if you are smaller and want to use the laptop in you lap.. maybe the smaller screen with the MUCH better chip would be the way to go.. wieght wise I think they are close.. but balancing a few extra inches + on your lap may be the deciding factor.. you want to be comfortable. -
I'm actually looking into getting one of these two (or the X8100) as a purchase for video editing (and possibly some animating/graphic design) and could use some advice on the subject.
First off, would video editing be more more subject to limitations of processing power or limitations regarding the video cards? Mind you I want to do hi-def editing.
Secondly, which would do the best concerning render time? I assume this is a processor-heavy procedure.
Third, the 9280 has 12GB DDR3, how would this affect my decision? Despite its lack of a second graphics card this sort of speed might be a real asset. Neither the X8100 nor the 9850 can boast that.
Finally, this need not be an immediate purchase. Are there upgrades for the 9850 rumored in the near future (6 months say) for it to be shipped with more processing power? If so, would this be enough to out-rank it against other models in the same school and time-frame?
Thanks much for the insight! -
Video editing, 3d graphics rendering, video re-formating = the D900.
All these tasks are heavily cpu dependent. A decent graphic card will do.
The M980 is only superior for getting the last few frames per second out of games - for actual work, there's no laptop better for the job than a D900.
Edit: And get a SSD for it, preferably a Gen2 Intel - you won't regret it. -
Old topic is old.
It's been discussed before many times: generally, the NP9850 will be better at gaming, and the D900F will be better at more CPU intensive tasks.
As ReDuNZL said too, an SSD would be good. It can make a whole system feel much "snappier", not to mention the large improvement over the typical HDD in terms of read/write speeds. The forum's favorite SSD at the moment is the Intel X25-M 160GB G2, simply because it has great performance that won't degrade over time unlike some other SSD's, and has TRIM support. -
Thanks much to each! Pretty much going with the 900f unless something crazy better comes out but July/August.

Umm can the 9280 do a second video card though??
-
No.

theriko, is there a wallpaper version of your avatar?

Thanks theriko. I really love the image. It's too bad that people were ripping him off. Now there's only smaller res versions, and watermarked. I can't say I blame him. But I'd love to have a high res version for my desktop.
Thanks again
