I'm currently using a Clevo P751DM sporting a 980M/6700K and it's been great for gaming so far but i'm worried about how long it'll last. I've been looking into upgrading and found a website that sells 980 notebook modules: http://www.aetina.com.tw/products-detail.php?i=44

What i'm wondering is if the 980 (not 980M) would work with my current laptop? It's a little bigger than the 980M (115mm compared to 105mm) but i'm not sure if that or any other compatibility issues would make it impossible to use.

    1) It might be very hard to cool it, even if it's 130w version
    2) 130w version definitely won't be very stronger than 120w 980M with prema vBios (where GPU gets 130-160w). 980M is just little weakened version of 980. So heavy crippled 980 is basically (still a bit better) same as 980M.
    3) You will throw money on something which won't give you noticeable performance increase.
    4) Heatsink compatibility is unsure (You would have to check core placement if it's same as 980M)
    5) You don't know if it work as Plug&Play (BIOS?)
    6) I see power connector (4pin?)

    7) aetina don't sell single units to end users, *many* have asked.
    8) many non clevo cards do not work on clevo laptops due to the thermal sensor setup (laptop turns itself off)
    9) if all the above didn't exist.... You would still be better off buying one of their 10 series MXM Gpus anyway!

The chances of that card just playing nice is pretty much nill.

Don't the 10 GPUs require pins that the 751DM doesn't boast?

I think he was thinking more about "sell your laptop asap. and buy new one that would save you time, money and unnecessary rage".
Most of us sold our Maxwell laptops, there is no other way if you want upgrade without issues, MXM is pretty dead at the moment.

    Technically from what you've got there;
The non-SLI version (missing the SLI connector on the left side) is what has been used in multiple upgrades
The SLI version of the MSI 1070 you've got there hasn't been successfully upgraded in anything *
    Yet ;)

The Gecube 1070 had its power circuitry wrongly specced, they blew up, and no news AFAIK on a fix or 2nd version

    Clevo versions only.

Every one of the GPUs pictured above has no additional power supply requirement. But you wouldn't want to run them much over 150W for long (if the card's FETs can handle that much in the first place as Gecube found out the hard way) . But as Prema says, the returns from running the TDP above a certain point are diminishing (e.g. not much benefit from running a 1080 at 270W vs stock 200W)

    * DARCODER put one in his P377SMA but had trouble with it and his self-made display cable for 4K mod

Okay, so only the Clevo 10XX GPUs have those power supply issues and the difficulty is finding a 150W GPU MXM? Something like these would be compatible in theory?

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/112144267554 (1070, MSI/Clevo)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/182588894256 (1070, MSI, apparently pulled from an MSI Vortex)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/122498233515 (1080, MSI; this one says it's 86mm as opposed to the 980M's 82mm width)

One other thing: How would this affect the screen of the P751DM? Would that or the BIOS require any adjustments?

EDIT Also would drivers need to uninstalled?

MSI GTX1070 works fine with P377SM-A, but on 1080p screen. We (notebookcheck.pl users) have confirmation, that this card works also in P170SM-A, so probably whole SM-A family support this card.
Also Eurocom sells upgrade kit for P870DM with GTX1070.

Okay, so does that mean the MSI 1070 will work in the P751DM? Looking at pictures, it seems to be the only card that would match up with my heatsink, but it has a higher power draw than the 980M (1060 seems to be the same at 100W).

    Nobody tries this.
First, MSI 1070 is bigger than standard MXM cards - only P870 chassis can handle it without cutting.
    1060 has TDP around 70W, 1070 has 122W.

Yes to even start enjoying the benefit you would need to link up the primary and secondary heatsinks using custom heatpipes and have the secondary fan linked into the first.

Or, like me, use external fan controller with ability to drive fan at 120% speed.

I've been looking into that i.e. the materials necessary/compatible with making a custom heatsink or modifying my current one with copper tubes and fitting in a new fan.

Not an easy project but the room from the 2nd card/heatsink makes it possible.

As long as the card will work i.e. something like this won't blow up my laptop, i'm fine making a new heatsink to match.

The 1070 actually has a TDP of 115W. Besides, @Coolane was able to bump up the TDP of their 1070 to over 200W since January 2017. I probably won't go that far: maybe 150 or 170 as a max as I'm keeping my heatsink as stock as possible.

HWInfo64 shows 122W for non-sli version of MSI GTX1070 under GTA V (in P375SM with HDMI screen).
I'm building new platform, similar to yours, now waiting only for GPU heatsink from C.E.G. My 1070 have low ASIC, so card hits power limit very fast. I plan to mod VRM in similar way like in desktop cards.

If you download @Coolane's tool it'll tell you the TDP for the 1070 is 115W. People have already analyzed the vbios and confirm the TDP is 115W.

We are talking very small differences at that point between 122W and 115W lol, I would be surprised if any externally reported figure is that accurate anyway.
