Right now I have a M860tu with the 9800M GTS and I'm wondering about the heat the new 260M and 280M produce compared to the 9800M GTS.

The 280M will probably produce alot more heat, but what about the 260M?

the 260M is perfect in that system.

the 280M will require a bit more effort to keep it cool (undervolting)

Err... Nope. I'm using the GTX 280m O/Ced on stock voltage. I guess the temps do get high @ 85c after hours of intensive gaming, but I don't think that warrants an undervolt.

The 9800M GTS runs hotter than the 260M.

the reason is that the GTX 260M (and 280M) is a die-shrink of the previous 9800M cores.

... so faster and runs cooler.

My GTX 260M idles at 43C - 45C, goes up to 75C during some games and up to 80C during others, for example GTA IV. I have it OC'd about 15 Mhz or something though.

No. A NP8660. If I had a NP8662, I don't think the I'd be spending that much for an upgrade for the GC. But since I'm coming from a 9800m GTS, yea, it's so worth it.

The only thing I'm lacking now is processing power

Hey 000022, where did you buy your gtx 280m and how much? I'm very interested on upgrading my 9800m gts but I just can't seem to find one for under $500.

I bought it from RJtech which isn't really far off from $500, $490 I think.

Are there more hardware/software steps involved to upgrade from a 9800m GTS to an 260M? I like the fact that it runs cooler, but I'd also like to know what I need to do in order to get it working properly on my M860tu.

You'll need to update your BIOS to the most recent version (v.14, I forget someone?) and reapply thermal paste when installing the components but that's about it.

Installing a 280m is a little more difficult and risky to say the least but should still work if sucessful.

Heh, almost wish I had a m9800GTS not a m9800GT to justify the upgrade to GTX260m. Plus all these news about GTS260m with low TDP and DDR5 make me hold the horses :/

Well, for one, it isn't guaranteed that Clevo would produce MXM 2.1 versions of those GTS cards.

Secondly, unless power consumption is high on your concern list, the GTX cards are still better in terms of performance according to Nvidia's spec list. But I don't think those two cards will remain at the top for long, with the advent of 40nm and then 32nm, you know what's going to happen.
