4/28/11
Design flaw fixed, shipments have fully resumed.
Recall set to begin shortly.
NOTE: This only effects you, if you received your Sandy Bridge equipped Clevo machine in January.

Hi,
Here is the latest info that I got from Clevo Sager:
"SATA ports 2-5 are used on all model not only 8170, ODD is on port 2 not 1, at this time we are awaiting for more detail on Intel’s next step to Clevo."
SO ALL models have this issue.
ETA:
"As some of you may have heard, Intel has recently announced a halt to shipments of 6 Series chipsets due to a quality concern. Sager has been working with Intel and Clevo to determine details and the timeline for a resolution of this problem. While we continue to do everything in our power to understand this issue, we have made a decision to halt shipments of 8130, 8150 and 8170 systems until we have a full grasp of the issue and a timeline for resolution. We realize this may be an inconvenience to some of our customers, but we feel it is important that we have full confidence in the product before shipping. We thank you in advance for your patience." -
Hmm, so the optical drive for the 8150 is on the SATA #2 port?
Then is the eSATA port on the SATA #1? -
This is worse than a sober cheerleader.
-
Wait what? so the 8150 is effected after all!?!
-
Apparently everything is.
-
I apparently will have to live with a single HDD slot.........
If it ships at all, I mean.. -
Yes that line about how the ODD is hooked up is direct from the Mobo PM from Sager / Clevo, so yea I would believe them =)
-
No I knew that, but we were told previously that the HDD is on port 0 while the ODD is on port 1, the esata would be the only effected part of the system. Now I understand that the ODD is on port 2? Is it possible to switch the ports somehow?
-
The first info was how we believed things were hooked up, but we were told the correct information. You can't switch the ports, as thats how its wired on the board.
-
As I see. Well guess I am screwed unless I can figure out a way to get the laptop back to my buddy before it ships overseas...thanks for the info.

Apparently it is more like this..
The SATA II controller on board seems to be the problem.
Thus, every SATA II interface, which is the Optical drive, and the eSATA port, may be affected, unless clevo used the eSATA port to use a SATA III controller, which is not likely.
The SATA III controller is fine and unaffected, but unfortunately, 8130 & 8150 users only have one SATA III bay - the single HDD slot.
8170 users can use both SATA III bays, as both are not controlled by the SATA II controllers..
This is disappointing news indeed... -
sooooo does this mean those whose orders are expected to go out mid February will get the fixed boards? According to the article they've already fixed the problem.
-
Yeah they have but the boards won't ship out to manufacturers for quite some time iirc. The best shot at getting a fixed board would be around April I would think.
-
They have fixed the issue, in the next revision of chips, which have just gone to production soon. So no, and now with the shipping halt there is a chance that no one will see a new laptop until they get it resolved. We are awaiting more information.
-
Now this is something worthy of highlighting. So the mid-Feb allotment is still shipping?
-
Nope, that was then changed from when we received it from our rep to their standard line:

Well at least Intel has caught this problem now instead of 6 months or a year down the road..
-
Oh God, please not another delay. I ordered on 1/25, I really hope this doesn't affect when I will get my laptop.
-
hey I'm in the same boat with you since I ordered mine on the 24th. Just think the worst so when something else down the road delays your order again, you wont as upset...
I just hope that they can replace the faulty board with a new one before they ship ours out. -
I guess a couple of weeks or a month won't hurt.. It's not like the g2 i7s are going to run away. Sort of expected on the 1st lot of any new thing right?
-
UGHGGHGHH!!! I've been trying to buy a new laptop for 5 months. I had a 5125 on order late summer then this huge FHD backorder came up, and I canceled to wait for Sandy Bridge. I'm ready to place my new order TODAY and this bombshell drops. Don't think I'm meant to own a Clevo/Sager :-(
-
OP can you edit your post to reflect the official words from clevo/resellers. As this thread will get longer and longer as people wait for their laptops or hear about this, and going through endless pages to find their responses isnt fun. Thanks.
-
I wonder how they'll handle this for those who already have their laptops or those whose shipments are in the mail....... Hopefully the turn around time on replacements will be quick.
-
Until the factory gets the new MB from Intel, there is no way to fix the already sent laptops.
Once the chunk of MB's hit the factories, then we will be able to ship our laptops back for repair, and it should be quick.... hopefully. -
I sure hope so...
-
With something like this, I sure hope they pay for 2-day or overnight shipping each way because UPS ground is like a ten business day round trip for me. That means most likely at least 3 weeks I'll be without a machine.
-
Well you guys are lucky, with me I have to figure out a way to stop my package from being shipped overseas before it does, otherwise I am going to have to pay international shipping to get the thing back to the states...I swear its like one of those movies where the hero tries to find the ticking time bomb before it explodes...
-
^^ This.
I sincerely hope so. I live on the east coast as well, and I wouldn't like to spend my own money to pay for it to be shipped and fixed, and sent back only to wait terrible amounts of time.. -
Oh no, I'm not spending a dime on this thing. It needs to be 100% paid for. Recall = Intel's money. I hope Sager takes expedited shipping into account when negotiating for repair compensation.

Just from Sager on Customers who have a machine or one in route:
As some of you may have heard, Intel has recently announced a halt to shipments of 6 Series chipsets due to a quality concern. Sager has been working with Intel and Clevo to determine details and the time line for a resolution of this problem. For those of you with units containing these chips (8130, 8150 and 8170 systems), we want to insure you that we are endeavoring to reach a resolution quickly. We will keep you informed of developments as we learn more. We thank you in advance for your patience. -
Thanks Justin. Sounds like the two internal 2.5" drive bays are SATA III and not affected by this, only the optical and eSATA correct? That's fine. Hopefully they get this managed and implemented before too long.
-
So how long a delay are we looking at here?
-
That's the big $$ question, and we are still awaiting for an answer for that one, which may take a day or so as everything gets sorted out.
-
ouch, sorry to hear that.
-
Yeah, ground shippings make me wish I lived in Oregon, not in NC..
-
This is awful, I just got my 8170 nice and early...only to find out that this news has been dropped on me. I wonder how this will not only affect the future Sager models and their respective releases, but also at what time will better GPU's come by, and with what rig.
Oh well, I do have a little netbook to tide me over, but this is a shame.
And I live in MD, so I feel ya there meraki. -
Just got back in to the house. I'll will keep the OP updated on the daily changes.
If I miss anything PLEASE HAVE SOMEONE SEND ME a PM. -
From what I have read, Intel did not catch it. After receiving complaints they continued to ship until they were able to reproduce the problem and decide how to handle it.
-
change order to x7200 for the win!
too soon? -
So say if i go and buy the motherboard + i5 2500k and when the replacements are out. Will i be able to get the new motherboard free?
-
Dang it! Received my 8130 last Thursday...have been stoked about it and now this...guess will just have to sit tight for now and see what happens. I feel for you guys on the east coast, I'm in NC and hoping for better than ground shipping for recalls.
-
We don't know yet, the recall is from intel to the motherboard manufacturers, IE Intel to eVGA, XFX, Asus, etc. How people who already bought those motherboards are handled, thats up to eVGA, XFX, and Asus, so you have to wait and see what they say.
-
You also in NC? Where you at?
-
Greensboro! See you're at Duke University...tough loss to St. John's. I grew up in Chapel Hill
-
Oops, left an (s) out of the thread title. My typing today ha been a failure.
-
left out an "s" in "has"

Don't even get me started on the St. Johns game....
