I have been lurking in many forums and asked around if notebook fans are replaceable by other types.
I got a few answers and it appears that it is possible.
The thing is that the size is sort of custom made and a CAD file apparently is required for controlling the fan speed and such.
My question is , is anybody willing to try modding the fans of the M57xRU with quieter ones?
I would do it myself, but I`m close to 0 when it comes to mods.

That will not be easy, I can almost tell you that is impossible...

Why? Because the limited space/size and the required type of fan(centrifugal one)...

You can mod heatsinks, change then with a better ones, but fans are a diferent history... Maybe with an external system, but thats to much mod for me...

If you want to increase the cooling power, you can always use one of these:

Lanlabs www.shopl2.com do liquid cooling in laptops. It has an external piece though so it kind of ruins the purpose of having a laptop.

I have two of those fans. [D90xC Laptop with SLI] One I mount at the memory [left side rear] and one mounts at the Video [far right rear]. With The Witcher running at 1920x1200, the memory area of the keyboard used to get hot, but now just the exhaust of these fans is hot. The exhaust pivots some that you have some control of were it will go. It lights up to confirm "on" operation. You can pick up off Ebay. The are quiet. The mounting is a little bit quirky though. It uses a Spring Loaded Pin along with a thumb screw "clamping". Not highly portable, but good for semi-stationery work.

No no no, the laptop runs cool, max temp 65C GPU, 62 now for the CPU ...
I want quieter fans, and please don`t tell it can`t be done.

It probably can be done, particularly if the system is properly ACPI-compliant, because then the OS controls most of the h/w instead of the BIOS (yeah, I know, it's an overbroad generalization, but you get the point :D ); however, it may require some very sophisticated tinkering, and might even require that an additional microcontroller be added to the fan unit itself if, for example, the mobo can only provide voltage in large steps, and those steps need to be smoothed to permit the use of finer gradations in the fan's speed.

Hummm... so the problem is not in the fans but in wich speed they are rotating...

Unfortunately we can´t control their RPM, allest without some hard work on it... but I don´t have de necessary knowledge to edit the BIOS ACPI tables...

If anyone knows, please help us...

Well, K-Tron sugested some companies, but woosh, they charge 300$ for 1 fan  .
Granted, it`s custom made and all, but that`s a little too much.
But 200$ for BOTH fans IMO is decent...
I would do pretty much anything to make the RU the perfect 17 inch non SLI laptop...it`s so close...

That`s what is bothering me about Sager, they would not allow me to set my own speeds.
I mean, my GPU idles at 33-37C and the CPUs at 33-35C .
I mean come on, lowering the speed to half would still keep the temps below 45-50C ...
Yea, I`d be cool if some modder would share some thoughts.

Just use TEC's (Peltier's). They are much more controllable and don't look like a giant chimney growing out of your laptop :D

But then you will need a 300W power brick to feed the Peltier... they consume to much power... :D

One good mod for M570RU old chassis owners that will decrease the CPU temperature...

One huge problem in the old chassis CPU heatsinks, is that the heatpipe is only in contact with the base of the cooler in one side. The other remais uncovered. So if we could cover all the heatpipe the heat transfers between the CPU core <-> heatpipe <-> heatsink should become twice as fast. Better heat transfers, less heat...

    I will do this ->

Grab yourself some Artic Silver Premium(thermal paste + epoxi):

Then shape one piece of metal, preferentially aluminium/copper, and make an U shape of the heatpipe.

Finally put some ASPremium on it and put it over the CPU cooler.

Now the heatpipe will receive heat from all sides!

That should work on the GPU cooler too, the two heatpipes have uncovered parts. Better heat transfers, the heat is dissipated faster, less heat.

Dude... would it hurt you to run a swifter over the floor once in awhile... probably could hold off on the liquid nitrogen by just clearing the dust bunnies out of the air...

Now that is a clever solution if it really helps (would like to see some heat benchs with and without on a d901c).

Eventually a full external acessory for the d901c could be built. Say one with 4 fans that can be attached to the back of the lappy. If lowered the temps enough it would be the dream of notebook overclockers :)

    Trance.

Audigy, you got some pretty awesome ideas there, you might want to consider opening a laptop modding company :)
