For some weird unknown reason my drivers stuck to old stock drives:

    Driver Packaging Version 8.80-101110a1-109153C-ATI
    Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
    2D Driver Version 8.01.01.1105
    2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
    Direct3D Version 8.14.10.0798
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.10358
    Catalyst Control Center Version 2011.0419.2218.38209

Should I just remove the drives currently installed and reinstall using those drivers?

That is probably because this is the wrong driver packaging. The driver downloaded from the link in the first post (filename: 11-5_mobility_vista_win7_32-64_ccc.exe) will not install/update for the 6970M on these laptops. There always seems to be 2 different mobility driver packages, and this same issue has been experienced before with previous drivers. I'm not sure where to find the alternate driver packaging so we'll have to wait for someone to provide another link.

**EDIT** OK, I came across this link http://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/mobile/11-5_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe. This packaging will update to the 11.5 driver ( driver version 8.850, as listed in the release notes). Notice the different filename ( 11-5_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe). I found the link on this page: http://beqiraj.net/. It's in German, and since this is not from an official source you may not want to install them. Just giving a heads up.

**EDIT 2** Came across this thread on the Alienware forum ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/577243-amd-6970m-users-proper-catalyst-installation-method.html). You might want to check it out. Apparently the proper driver package for the 6970M must be obtained from a different section on AMD's website, and the filename should always end with 'ocl'. If you can't get it here's a direct link: http://www2.ati.com/DRIVERS/mobile/11-5_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe.

strange as its a direct link from amd.
    what do you suggest?
remove the whole post or what.

i know nothing about ati and only post as a convenience to others.

think ill stick to nvidia in the future.

AMD only links to the downloader in their website, and that program checks if you should be able to use the official Catalyst driver suite or not.
Usually its no problem once you get the direct link to the driver as posted by TheGreatAnonymous.

Sager / Clevo got the same problem with Nvidia reference drivers, but its caused by the drivers lacking stuff in the inf file. D:

Well it's not really a big deal. I think most people on the forum know how to get the drivers working. However, when I first received my notebook I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I could not update the driver, so I wanted to give a heads up to others who may have ran into the same issue. This driver oddness with ATI have two different packages, one of which is almost hidden on their website, is one reason I wanted to try Nvidia and go with the 485M, but I was too impatient to wait for it. Or maybe it's Clevo/Sager's fault for opting out of official driver support or something.

The good news is that after installing the new driver I have gotten some minor performance gains in a few games, and my 3DMark11 score went up about 30 points. Hopefully AMD keeps improving.

Im using the drivers here now. :D

Did express uninstall of all AMD / ATI stuff, then reboot.
Uninstalled the GPU driver that was left, then reboot again.
Launched the AMD modded drivers, and once finished did the last reboot.

Looks like the GPU driver is running perfectly and GPU-Z says im using AMD Catalyst 11.5.

I simply installed the drivers off the Sager CD, then went to AMD's homepage and used their driver selection process to update mine to 11.4. I had to click on the 2nd tab on their results page to select the complete package, but had no problems updating.

My understanding was that there's no driver headache as long as you install the drivers off the Sager CD first and THEN update.

Edit: BTW, I have not updated to 11.5 yet.

Wow, that was fast after 11.4 came out just a couple of weeks ago...

No problems installing it to 11.5. 3DMark11 seems to give some more points as 3DMark06. No gain in Vantage, though.

Crysis 2 now DOESN´T flicker any more with CF! :) Runs very stable now.
Even Shift 2 Unleashed does not flicker and no crashes so far.

The negative: Still can´t turn on AA on "Command and Conquer 3" / "Kanes Wrath". always get a white screen (the game runs, but you can´t see anything). That was in 11.4, too, but not in 11.2/ 11.3.... :(
And I still get blue screens in Red Alert 3. Pretty quick... the ATI driver is blamed by the BSOD.
Anyone tried these games and made some experiences with the 6970m?

Thanks! Yeah, that´s it... hope they will fix this, a little bit strange...

The problems with Red Alert 3 remains, tons of BSOD´s :(
If someone with 6970m got this game, could you please try it and write here if you have the same problems?
It´s not a "big" thing, though, because I don´t play it very often. But I would like to just have the knowing that it WOULD run if I want to ;).

Last night I updated to 11.5, and realized that previously my original driver off the Sager CD never updated to 11.4 - only the other components. I was thrown off by the list of components during install that had a checkmark under "Driver", but upon closer inspection it showed that it was NOT updating. The 11.5 OCL driver above did the trick, of course. Thanks guys.

followed the link to guru3d and downloaded the driver.
I had to remove the 11.5 installed from AMD website (got a lot of stuttering in Crysis 2 and other games).
Uninstalled 11.5 , used driver sweeper and installed the ones from guru3D. Works flawlessly!! thanks for posting the link!

I'll try out both drivers now and give you a heads up. Thanks again.

    Edit: It works!

There is a patch 1.01 out and with that and the new 11.5 I don´t get crashes and flickering like before. I don´t know for sure if CF works properly, but the game seems to run fine now...

Use RadeonPro and at "Tweaks" just take the MVPU mode "Alternate Frame Rendering"... getting 58 FPS on highest settings...

Best course of action is probably to install the driver off of the included disc first, then you may proceed to upgrade to the latest Catalyst driver.

You first need to get the heatsink for the 6970m,

and then get a larger PSU. Your 120W PSU can't handle this card.

Then you can go ahead and install the 11.5 drivers :D

This thread helped a lot, just the ocl version works for this card.
