Yes, in fact, a laptop without Optimus requires ''special wiring'' and a special BIOS that disables the HD 3000(4000) like it would disable, say, Hyper-Threading or Speedstep. The display then needs to be connected to the discrete card, not to the Intel PCH.
The Intel integrated graphics is in fact not physically on the PCI bus, it just pretends to be for the sake of the ACPI. Physically, it's on the CPU ring bus, and connected to the display over DMI and PCH.

So in terms for idiots a clevo with 7970m will be able to switch to Integrated graphics or not?
-
lets just say that chances are high it will be able to
more info to come in the next few weeks i presume....
-
Jack @ LBO seems to have confirmed it

a little OT but does anyone know the rough figures for battery runtime gain?
I am coming form a 6990m in a HM and was wondering whether the 7970m will bring battery life improvements. ( this is without enduro obviously) -
if at all, id say that battery life improvements would be minimal / negligible at best when using the laptop in idling / under load. what would definitely make a significant difference in power consumption will be the ZeroCore feature, provided the screen is switched off. that would be ideal for downloading stuff overnight, for example
AMD Enduro for the 7970M. Is it supported or not?
