    Hello.

I have been monitoring these forums for few weeks and decided it was time to register :). I will be purchasing a new laptop within a month give or take. I have not decided as of yet which retailer I will be dealing with, but overall, I see that Malibal, XoticPC, and Mythlogic are worthy of their status.

I just have a quick question regarding the AMD Radeon HD 6990M.

Is it worth getting the AMD Radeon HD 6990M over the NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 485M 2GB GDDR5. Forget the cost of the Nvidia.... The AMD has not hit the shelves...Testing on the Sager/Clevo machines is "Nil" atm from the users on these forums whom I trust..... so we have no data on performance / overheating, graphical anomalies etc... I am just trying to justify choosing AMD vs Nvidia.

thx for all your help, support etc...

    Laptopnub...out!

Specs wise the 6990M is much faster, and even initial benching on the Alienwares confirm this. It is about the same cost as the 485M as well (same price on some sites).

I'd say the 485m's only advantage is 3D. Otherwise stick to the 6990M.

Benchmarks from various sources have shown the 6990M to dominate every other mobile graphics card available now. And it's considerably cheaper than the top performing NVIDIA card. I'd say it's very worth it, unless you like PhyX so much you can't live without it.

I dunno why people are mentioning PhysX and CUDA over the fact the the AMD card doesn't support the 3D matte screen. I'd get the 485m for that alone.

Not everyone is interested in 3D and the extra costs and headaches that come with it. You do make a good point however, if you want 3D, NVIDIA is the way to go.

I won't touch 3d with a ten foot pole. The last time I tried it on a friends desktop I had migraines afterwards. But I do agree, nVidia's 3d technology is used fully, while AMD's is not.

When I get my laptop (with an estimated ship date of August 15th) I will do benchmarks myself and post them here.

Lol, check back in 10 years for 3D, if it's still around :p Maybe by then it would be better.

3D is a gimmick. But some people like the idea, so if that's what you're after, get the 485M. If you're after best performance for your dollar, you can't beat the 6990.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I guess I may just have to wait until some of you actually get the AMD Card in your systems and post some feedback. I guess I should have posted that the laptop would be used for Gaming Only (BF3 / COD / Diablo III / Elder Scrolls of Skyrim! and surfing the net LOL. So... just looking for the best video game experience with the least amount of headaches...

As you can see by my forum Name, "Laptopnub," I am not a Laptop guru at all. I just want a damn good gaming machine without headache hence me asking about these AMD cards...guess only time will tell once you guys start playing with them.

I'd love 3D, but I'm not sure it's worth the cost of admittance, yet. I don't understand the hate.

If you don't need a laptop really soon, just wait for benchmarks before making your decision.
I would have waited for benchmarks, but I got the 6990m because of an offer I couldn't refuse.
EDIT: AMD's recent drivers are said to be stable. And if you're interested in Battlefield 3, it seems that NVidia card are much more problematic in the alpha version of the game. I say that from experience.

I didn't know MATLAB could use NVidia's CUDA. I MAY have kept the GTX 560m with that information... nah. I love me some gaming performance.

I'll admit that my 9800GT SLI setup is getting old, but in BFBC2 they're bottlenecked by my even older E8400. GPUs working at 30%. The problems could be caused by DX10 - 11.

That said, I could not run the BF3 alpha in fullscreen for any length of time, and I had some graphic bugs, like invisible trees. There were also a LOT of forum posts about NVidia cards crashing the game, with no threads for AMD cards. Realtively many users reported problems with GTX 580 (desktop) cards and 2500K processors.

I think I just blew the NDA.

If you are only interested in gaming, 6990M is by far better than the 485M.

I know mine is an Alienware, m18x with dual 6990s, but these things fricken own ... total Beast. Rock solid stable even with some pretty extreme OCing and without any cooling mods at pretty hot room temps and without any fan control (which I would envy any sager/clevo owner if you get fan control and Dell doesn't update a bios with it) ... 6990s all the way.

What are your GPU temps like under load?
That 3dmark11 score is sick :)

The 3dMark score has increase :)

Um temps are great under load. High 70s low 80s.

ONE of my GPU sensors on ONE of my chips spikes, hits 87, 88, 89 sometimes. I think I just need to repaste with IC diamond and it should be golden. Looks like part of the chip isn't pasted well ...

Yeah, your GPU score is clearly insane, I'd never even dare to hope that someone could get close to 9k GPU score in 11 before the 7000 series or Maxwell.

I am determined to break 9K gpu score :)

From what I hear the 2630 is actually slightly underclocked factory, the bclk is lower then it should be and actually underclocks everything in the system including the GPUs even ... so I am hoping if I correct this I can push a little farther...
