That's odd... the high end parts have a release date many months earlier than previous roadmaps. Wonder if it is true, guess so...

The article on the Nvidia GPU releases says that they are most likely going to release the mobile versions first.

AMD always releases the new mobile parts at CeBIT, and then notebooks go up for preorder late Feb. or early March.

Here's hoping it can fit them into my current rig no problem and somehow sell off my used 6990m.

the 6970 has a PC mark vantage score of 9584. With power draw of 100W.

    AMD Radeon HD 6970M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Chelsea pro has vantage score of 9000 with 25 w power draw. and 11000 with 35w draw
Means that really performance per watt has increased 3-4 times.

Can't wait for my next upgrade! As I said before, my only concern is that the MXM port might change. It was less than an year after I bought my laptop that the MXM port changed and I couldn't upgrade anymore.

I expect Nvidia to invent an MXM 4.0, just to force the manufacturers to buy new hardware.

Well now if it happens I am blaming you.

Though honestly if nvidia was going to do this we would have heard about it by now. With chips this late in development I dunno how easily they could be mated to a new interface(perhaps super easily perhaps not at all).

I dont really understand the 28nm thing. can something explain it to me? does that mean the new graphics cards will be physically smaller for laptops or something?

Not necessarily. It just means better efficiency, cooler, less power, more performance.

    In a word: better.

Hoping to upgrade the GPU in the future and HOPEFully increase batt life?

EDIT: just saw pictures of the P270WM

Pure speculation at this point, balls. Ask your reseller if you want a definitive answer. We're all crossing our fingers and hoping that the new GPUs are MXM3.0B compatible :)

I am more concerned with the fact that PCI-E 3.0 is coming to the market next year with Ivy Bridge. This might require some minor tweaking of the MXM card, but in this case even if a new MXM slot is released it should be backwards compatible with today's version. Also, as far as I understand, current MXM cards don't work that well with switchable graphics, so this might also push for a redesign. Overall, there are some signs that the current standard is not perfect.

And don't count on knowing in advance if they will change it or not, 2 years ago when they changed from 2.1 to 3.0 we only found out about it 2-3 months before release.

    @ballsofsteel

That looks like MXM 3.0 and we are also talking about a motherboard based on Sandy Bridge architecture so it is very unlikely to have a different MXM slot.

    Blacky...two questions:

    1) Remind me again...what does PCIE have to do with MXM?

    2) Why should the new MXM slot be backwards compatible?

    1. Because the current MXM slot is a modified version of the standard PCI-E 2.0 slot and current laptop video cards work on the PCI-E 2.0 standard. The same instructions in the chipset designed for PCI-E work for the MXM slot.

    2. Because PCI-E 3.0 is backwards compatible with PCI-E 2.0 . Thus a new MXM slot can be designed to be backwards compatible with current cards.

but p270 will remain top for at least 1 year, and x79 may continue support ivy-e or something 22nm lga2011 cpu, i think if clevo knows there is mxm 4.0 comming with ivy they wont use 3.0 on p270 bcz re-layout its mobo cost a lot.......

Not necessarily. We didn't find out about 3.0 until after the details on the 280M and 4870 GPUs had been announced. That was around November, and they were released in Jan/Feb. Up until then, it was being assumed that they were still on the 2.1 interface.
