ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 XT (in MXM 3.0B)

    ETA: Q4 2009 to Q1 2010

We have been hearing speculations and rumors... but some trusted sources have confirmed that these ATI MXM 3.0B modules will be out soon.

You will find that these cards will become options for a number of current Clevo W8xxCU [and probably D900F] models (with official BIOS updates), as well as a few other non-Clevo models.

should be the fastest mobile card when it comes out... probably edges out the GTX 280M.

As for which models will get it... preliminary info shows that it will be for the new W8xxCU series... with a BIOS update.

Clevo and their vendors will probably be hush hush about this... but I am confident that we will hear official word in about a month.

Well this was expected though I was hoping we'd see the 5870 sooner. Personally I'd rather go with a GTX 280m over the 4870 simply because I prefer nVidia drivers and they have better performance in key games that I play.

I do not think you would even notice a difference with your GTX 280M.

each of the new mobile videocards are only getting small 5% gains over the previous top videocard.

its not going to be a huge difference until 2 to 3 generations later.... like going from 7950GTX to 8800M GTX

I know, but it is nice to know that if I get bored with my Nvidia I could give Ati a go and see how they are like. To be fair I expect the ATI to be better in 3dmark but be all the same in games, probably perform better with AA on due to DX 10.1 .

Still is very good to have an option between Nvidia and Ati ... keeps the GPU prices lower.

I hope they are the same as the m17x's one so the crossfire is the same slot. I know it won't be the same length but I can get that's from alienware.

I don't think there is any reason to upgrade until the 5000 series become available, specially if they cost more (in eurocom.com they cost 105$ more than the 280m's)

The main issue I have about most ATI notebook videocards is...
    - some will not have a temp sensor on them

... meaning you cannot monitor the GPU temps at all through software... which would suck if you have to troubleshoot a overheating problem.

you bring an important point there. My 3870x2 had sensors on them but I know the 4870 doesn't. Some programs that I know that may moniter them is everest and PC wizard. But easy like hwmoniter.

if RivaTuner or ATI Tray Tools cannot do the temp monitoring, then the videocard is (to me) worthless.

I don't understand the ATi fanboyism. I can't think of a single thing that's better about ATi cards vs. nVidia. Usually they're not as well optimized in some top end games and the drivers are still not up to par.

Technically, the 4870 should have always been faster than the G92 based 280M. But since the core clock was so low, the 4870 was relatively equal. This isn't even considering GDDR5, which would undoubtedly make the 4870 a lot faster. The desktop 4870/90 gave even the GTX 260/285's a run for their money with core clocks approaching 1ghz and GDDR5 memory. If the XT version of the mobile 4870 is what I think it is, and at least clocked at 600mhz core, Ati will finally have a true edge on the 280M.

I might be way off but I always thought a lot of ATI fanboyism has more to do with nVidia than it does with ATI. nVidia as a company can be pretty polarizing. nVidia is to Intel as ATI is to AMD.(Even before AMD bought ATI)
That said, I own two nVidia cards and 0 ATI cards :)

As the 5000 series is coming out next year at some time, and the gtx 380m
I am going to wait for them, assuming they are mxm3.0
If they arent Ill switch to this.
How much do you think it'll cost?

I don't see anything wrong with investing in an ATi card. I do wish that they would have better driver support, but the card itself is good. Is it worth moving up from the GTX 280M? That is up to your wallet to decide if it agrees with you rather than asking me. I'm just some silly Ruskie.

Alienware is not XT version. Is the normal 4870 which has been around ever since the Asus W90. XT version has higher clocks.

You think there are two different ATI 4870 MXM 3.0b cards? How many different versions are there? Do you have some type of link describing the difference? I have a hard time believing that this is yet another version of the 4870s.

There's a difference between fanboyism and just hating the other company. I just hate the other company cause they make crap GPUs that only last for 2-2.5 years at most and the drivers suck badly.

    Wow, yea I googled it.
I highly doubt intel's first GPU will be head to head with fermi, something thats from a company that is redoing a old card(tesla) unless I am wrong.
Also, mobile fermi or larrabee ever coming out?
