Wanted to make the thread for the ATI 6990m. So what exactly is ATI's flagship response to Nvidia's GTX 580m and 485m? anyone have details on it's architecture, die size, etc. and rumor says it's coming soon--how soon?
-
-
a guy who have amd rd friends says not just an unlocked 1120sp 6970m but clocks will be much higher -
-
If the rumors are true, it is a desktop 6870, the Barts XT.
-
hope it's not an underclocked HD 6870. Basically the GTX 580m performs as a underclocked GTX 560Ti. -
the Alienware guys are already ordering them for the M18x in Europe. apaprently the price is about half of the 580. there is a thread in the AW section. North America doesnt seem to have them yet though as all the ones are from the UK currently. I would expect alot of details in the next week or 2 if deivery dates are correct

Both OCed,
on x7200, 580m sli > 6990m cf
on m18x, 580m sli < 6990m cf.
That is to say, under 330w limitation, 6990m cf would be better due to AMD's power comsuption control. When the limitation raised to 600w, 580m sli could reash the level of 560ti sli and crash desktop 6870cf. -
Everyone should read what they write before posting. Sometimes, it's impossible to understand some posts. What does crash desktop 6870cf mean?
Anyway, I'm glad I waited on buying. I was going to pull the trigger on a remaining 485m, but from the reports on the Alienware forums, waiting a few more days for the 6990 should get me a faster, cheaper, cooler system. And no, I don't really care about having a 600W system burn a hole in my wood desk. I'll wait for a single 6990 in a Sager 8150. -
im sure both dell clevo psu can do 400w run 3dmark short benchmark
but playing games for hours psu may overheat, unless managed to keep it cool
btw clevo had added extra 30w to the mxm3.0 electric circuit>>>max 130w -
-
There's a thing i'm seriously afraid of is thermal problems due to higher clocks and unlocked shaders. I really want to break 8k+ in 3dmark11
-
I'm slightly annoyed that I've now fixed my existing order on the 580m, I really did not think the 6990m was going to be out so quickly. The only silver lining to cling to is that performance will be give and take on benchmarks with the 580m although the hardware upgrade on the 6990m should make it more competitive.
-
Wasn't it rumored that AMD has slightly less visual quality than Nvidia, which might explain its lead in some games?
Or that was just in one game? Black Ops -
I think you can disable the AI that reduce the image quality for FPS in catalsyt control center ...
-
Ai ?
-
-
We have no idea what the 6990m is or when we might see it... Especially next week we will have NO idea what everyone is talking about.
-
ya i remember........
quote
Testing NVIDIA vs. AMD Image Quality NVIDIA
AMD Radeon HD 6850 und HD 6870 Test - Bildqualität: Texturenflimmern (9/21) - TweakPC
i think those offically supports 480/485/580m can do 130w -
-
AMD looks better to me in everything except sparks?...
-
Set Catalyst to Optimum Quality mode to get rid of the cheating.
Made CoD:MW2 look like a new game for me after getting it on a Steam sale. -
-
Most review sites already make the AI adjustment when testing, but even at the default settings the advantage AMD gained in FPS was less than 10%. -
dont lie to us myth, but seriously if it is coming out next week then i might have to hold or cancel my order to see if the price difference is that big.
-
Remember Announced and I can buy this are two different dates
-
understood, but if it saves my $200 then ill be able to get an ssd which would make a bigger difference than the gtx 580 would. so any info on release would be good considering dell/alienware of uk are able to reserve systems with it already.

The 6990M should be coming in right around the 6970M's price, so 580M/6990M would be the same situation as 485M/6970M.
Save ~$250, get equal performance. -
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
What price are we looking at for the 6990M? About $600?
Mr. Mysterious -
the AW M18x UK guys are finding an upgrade from the 470 to AMD 6990m Crossfire is £384 exc VAT so I would say under the $600 mark easily
-
The 6970M started at $520 w/ heatsink. I expect the 6990M to come in as a direct replacement, at a very similar price. $600 or more would surprise me greatly.
-
Crap, I always buy just before a new release! Just got the 6970m. Hopefully this won't be my Dell 9100 all over again (got a Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB (based on a desktop 9600) then a month later the Mobility Radeon 9800 came out with twice the pipelines (8) and could be unlocked to a full X800 desktop core (12-16 pipelines)).

Yes the 580M has been shipping for days now.
_ -
im still waiting for parts through myth, and the only thing i could think of that they would need to wait on would be my gtx 580m. so hopefully in a week or 2 my system should be shipped. as for other resellers i would only guess the samething. except for lpc now.
-
We are already shipping the GTX 580M as well.
-
I have no idea if they're shipping, though by now they should be. There might be a shortage like you said though. I wouldn't order a laptop that would take me months to arrive though XD. I want it here quickly (I wouldn't mind a little time added on to test it first however).
-
dam u myth, jk. but lets not get off topic this is for amd. so is there any word on the nda for the 6990.
-
-
so that's this week now...this card will decide what notebook config I will soon get!
-
Same here. On the 300w vs. 600w issue, is it possible to have the M18x configured with an extra AC adapter (and would that help)?
-
I may or not be the first person to pre-order a 6990 from Mythlogic
-
I hope people are right, about the 6990M popping up tomorrow. I need to RMA my machine, as soon as yesterday.
