ATI Mobile Radeon HD 3870 512MB DDR3
the Mobile 3870 is going for 400 less than the 9800mGT at my store
From $2199.00 ATI Mobile Radeon HD 3870 512MB DDR3
From $2399.00 9800m GTS
From $2599.00 9800m GT
so its safe to say that a single 3870 is prob going to be far worse than a 9800m GT? what kind of 3dmark06 are we talking.. 6000-7000?
are other shops overing the 3870 mobile now.. in the m860tu and at what prices.
-
The HD3870 is likely to be around the same performance as the 9800GTS. You probably are going to have to wait until mid-late September to receive that card though due to massive delays.

You are right Heathkidd the 3dmark06 rating on Ati 3870 is about 8500ish.

Though I am surprised you found M860 to carry ATI, because Clevo already confirmed that they only carry Nvidia for now. I ordered Clevo M860TU with ATI 3870 from a reseller, but when I contacted the reseller and asking them if they really have the ATI on the laptop, they told me that I was right that the M860TU no longer carries ATI GPU and told me to pay additional 180 dollars for the Nvidia 9800 upgrade. Hopefully this is helpful. -

@youdontneedtoknow:
The HD3870 and 9800M GTS are no longer sold from Sager, but it may be possible to get them from a different Clevo reseller.
@Heathkidd:
link1313 is right, it should be roughly equivalent to the 9800gts, but the only way you'll get them in the US for now is probably ordering a barebone and building the laptop yourself, buying the HD3870 separately. -

Actually, it is Clevo that has not released either the ATi or 9800M GTS. So this would be a worldwide situation.
Of course some sellers may still show the cards offered, but don't expect them to ship any time soon.
You cannot buy either card separately for a Clevo M860TU since Clevo is the only source for them that would work in that model...and at this point they are both too buggy to work, so that is why Clevo has not released them. -

where can you buy HD3870? never mind I didn't read the previous post

Thanks for the info paladin

At the moment it's unknown. Paladin seems to know a bit more about the status of these graphics cards than I do, but I haven't heard any statements if they'll be released or not. I'm leaning towards them being released at some point in the future if the bugs can be fixed.

does the HD3870 work on a m570RU?
-
The laptops listed above are not from Sager but Metabox.. another clevo builder based in Perth Australia.
I haven't asked about how soon they expect them as im not really interested.. however the much lower price than the 9800m GTS and 9800m GT could explain a long delay on a order of one.
i currently have a 9800m GT on order from P4/metabox that i expect to pick up very soon as its literally a 10min drive to the offices of metabox.
Gosh i love lovely small model city of Perth -

i guess we will have to wait n see..

Want a notebook with ATI Crossfire Dual HD3870? Check out the W840-DI from Flextronic/Arima (dubbed the 2nd generation AW m9750, except AW doesn't carry it).
http://www.flextronics.com/arima/ViewProduct.asp?View=174
Here are 2 vendors that carry it:
http://www.digitalstormonline.com/laptoploadsaved.asp?id=169870
http://www.rkcomputer.net/rkcnotebooks/index.php?l=product_detail&p=95
I don't really know how the ATI dual Crossfire 3870 will compare with SLI NVIDIA 8800/9800 series, but I would expect that it's a notch slower. As far as comparison to a single 9800GT or 8800GTX card, I would imagine that the Dual Crossfire would be a bit faster. -

Both your links to vendors are broken.

There will be many companies picking up that Arima model with Crossfire. It is not expected in until the end of the month.

Here's the about to be released OCZ Whitebook based on the same chassis:
http://www.laptoppicker.com/archives/hot-new-gaming-laptop-ocz-whitebook-laptop.html
offering 2 GPU options, Crossfire Dual ATI or single 8800GTX. RKC does the same, but does not have it in stock. -
looks like the alieware 17x....
I hope ocz releases a 15in model soon my wife needs a laptop, soon.
Edit: I meant an updated 15in model ocz, DIY... -
-
Add Killernotebook to the list of vendors offering the Flextronic W840-DI with ATI Crossfire Dual HD3870. Mark goes further to offer a single 9800GXT as an option when it comes out. PLUS, he'll also be offering it in a.....drum roll please....MOBILE QUAD CORE as a cpu option. Did I mention that this thing has a back lit keyboard, too? Whoot!!! K|N will be calling it the Nagamaki.

I want one! I used to be an ATI fan boy until the nVidia 8 series came out. I would love to switch back to ATI for my lappy so it matches my desktop. Will have to wait and see how well it performs once it is released. It would also be nice to know when ATI will release a 4000 series mobile GPU.

-
Is there any European vendor selling this thing? I was going to buy an M860TU but I don't want to get something that's likely to break after just a few years, so I want an ATI
-
-
2-3 for gaming and then I'll maybe use it for something else, like only running an IM program/internet. If you are sure the 860TU won't fail, I'll get one of those, but these rumors are driving me crazy.
-
2-3 years might be good, but I wouldn't be surprised if the hard drive failed before the graphics card does. Mostly in a hot environment like a notebook, considering rarely does the hard drive get any sort of cooling.
-
Would getting a notebook cooler effectively decrease the chance of failing components?
-
-
Technically, yes, because it would reduce the amount of heat that components would receive (and therefore the heat cycle isn't as dramatic). However, there'd really be no way to say exactly how much it'll help life, as the lives of parts will differ too much when stock to be able to say what the difference with a cooler will be. If not that, then at least nobody has the time to just leave two laptops on for years to see if the cooler'd one will last longer and then repeat the test for the sake of scientific method.
Edit: What Nirvana says. Just another reason why Canada rocks. -
Is Sager/Clevo planning on adding any workstation graphics cards?
Specifically the Quadro FX series (the newer models, which include FX1700, FX2700, FX3700 etc.) or the ATI Fire GL? -
youdontneedtoknow Notebook Evangelist
don't know if you ask me...
-
-
well if they do release a 15inch with the radeon (arima) laptop. I'm in....
-
Here's a silly question. I wonder if you can have dual GPU, one Quadro and one gaming card. Not in SLI, but a set up where you can switch between GPU for different functions. For instance, if you were doing CAD work, turn on the FX3700, and if you're gaming switch to the 9800GTX. Like I said, silly question.
-
Potentially yeah it would just be a matter of swapping out the graphics modules. Kind of like swapping out harddrives...
It would be a nightmare with drivers though. -
Not to mention quite a mess with screws and thermal paste, because in a notebook they're hidden under the cooling solutions. Though I think dit_xi meant switching on the fly while the computer was on.
-
I always thought MXM modules had integrated cooling solutions that were completely independent of the chassis.
Shrug. -
No, they don`t
-
the great thing about the Arima chassis from RK Computers is that they allow you to buy it w/o the HD/OS, memory, wireless card, etc, which is almost barebone. I actually plan to buy this thing barebone and add my hard drive and maybe my atheros wireless. I'm sure I can get DDR3 Sodimms for cheaper at other places.
-
Building your own laptop? That'd be cool, though I'm interested on what the price difference to buying a full one is, compared to the price difference of building a desktop. Either way, it'd be bragging rights.

The initial release of this model will only be available with a single 3870 or crossfire 3870's. The NV GPU's will be introoduced later...... -
In particular the system stability and performance.
Thanks -
-
well guys P4laptops have removed both the 9800 GTS and 3870 m860tu configs
and the 9800 GT ones with the 1650x are not due till the 27th... from metabox the builder..
looks like metabox is only going to build 9800 GT m860tus now i guess... -
Hey RobM, did that Flextronics W840 DI arrive stateside yet?
Any hints to it's Performance? -
Cheers! -
Here is the link to the video with the bench.
