In less than 5 weeks from now January will be here as we all know. So the seeming fact that in January or maybe February 2010 the ATI Mobility HD5870 DDR5 cards will be out in notebooks should give us time to save our money to grab one or two? This information was given to me by a higher up at Eurocom and Acer Europe so why not for us here in the US? Will ATI beat out nVidia for the nex gen cards? What do you think?![]()

$20 says they will be GDDR3.

I raise my bet to $50.

I have to agree with Soviet on this one, but if they do turn out to be GDDR5, they would probably have a 128 bit memory bus. Here's hoping we're wrong though.
-
Uhm? How many notebooks with HD5000 videocards have been revealed so far? And, yes, I'd prepare for disappointment on this one. The amazing GDDR5 4870's have been a legend since the beginning of the year.
-
why don't they make 256 bit ddr5 card???? those idiots...
-
They don't want to release a card that would require a 130 watt cooling solution?
-
I would be very surrpised if we see machines available for purchase from Clevo that quick!
Remember how long the 980 took to come from announcement and preview to actual sale!
My money is april/may before orders taken -
Yeah i agree also it probably be on gddr3, the only nvidia and ati graphics cards that are gddr5 is the 4870 and 250. Great discussion by the way. I do agree if you had an Alienware in a business meeting then yes you would be laughed at but not a sager.

"The Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series is expected to be a direct translation of the desktop models and should have similar lines. At the top, the 5870, 5850 and 5830 will all have a very large 1,600 shader units (effects processors) and should support CrossFire on gaming-oriented desktop replacements. The top two will support fast GDDR5 memory while the 5830 will need GDDR3.
The 5770, 5750 and 5730 will all be close parallels to the 5800 graphics chips, including shaders and memory, but won't support CrossFire. At least one of the GDDR5 models should have a 1.3GHz memory clock speed."

I hope the chassis of 8662 can use the 58xx.....
-

Not going to happen.
-
I hope the W860CU will be able to use the 58xx
-
I think GDDR5 on high end cards in a notebook is still posing problems with heat and power so it might be a while longer then most of us would like or think...
-
the DDR5 issues are related to two things:
Right now they cant even make enough dies for the desktop market
and the DDR5 is STILL being extremely troublesome for mobile GPU's. With reports of shortages and downclocking issues in mobile counterparts i do not for see them being ddr5 at this time -

The Clevo D900F supports the AMD ATI HD5870...maybe soon...
"The Eurocom D900F Phantom i7 mobile workstation also comes with three physical SATA hard drives as well as a choice of RAID 0, RAID 1 or RAID 5 for extra fast transfer rates, data redundancy or automatic back ups.
It supports up to 24GB DDR3 1600 high memory. For graphics you can choose from high performance NVIDIA GTX 280M, AMD ATI HD5870 or OpenGL NVIDIA Quadro FX2800."

Very interesting...well if these make it out Q1, providing performance is as expected, and they add support to the M980NU (would be surprised if they didnt as thier flagship gaming laptop), then as soon as mobility modder has them added, I'll be looking to get some.
-
Wow... Eurocom has come really nice marketing. I just wonder if it's GDDR5 and 256bit... hopefully yes.
-
-
I'll have to say it will be in the M17x first
Now before you flame me retardedly you need to think about who has a very very large contract with ATI and is their offical partner
Though I do not doubt clevo would be right there with them -
I wouldn't doubt seeing something at CES. As far as a release it seems still ways away.
-
I think you will see something because ATI is trying the best it can to get ahead in the market before Nvidia can hit back.
Simple strategy -

I meant to say "wouldn't" meaning it will be at CES. Looking forward to the news!! (and pics)Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
EDIT I got my companies screwed up...wrong lawsuits. This is why I can't keep claiming to my friends I dont need sleep...

Vegas can kiss my shiny metal behind. I am the master at Russian Roulette. If they do ship in GDDR5, they will be using a 128-bit bus, if not straight GDDR3.

Toshiba has the GDDR5 on the x505 and it is not overheating what so ever. And the with the RAM difference the performance of 250M GTS GDDR5 performs same as 260M GTX GDDR3. So If anything as powerful as 260M or 280M gets the GDDR5 then we will see a real jump in GPU performance. The difference between 7 series Nvidia and 8 series Nvidia was alot but since 8 series, we did not see ajump in performance. 8800M GTX pulls scores closer to 260M GTX and only 15-20% slower than 280M GTX. We need a card that pulls 15K Vantage GPU without an overclock and it should happen in the next 12 months. And when it happens you will say " Ali told that".
-
2 4850's in xfire that are overclocked ALOT dont even score 15k, so i doubt just1 card will be doing it
-
mentioning Alienware might i add
-
January 7 for CES.. So I would imagine that would translate into March-ish, even April before *real* people get these in their hands.. and that's me being optimistic.

I find it very interesting how DX11 is coming to notebooks so quickly! Less than a year! Nvidia is really getting owned this round. If they're smart, they'll use this downtime to think of something amazing to hit back at ATi. If you recall, ATi pretty much did the wait in a corner thing when Nvidia was dominating with their 8000 series desktop GPUs. Look what happened.
-
-
As would I like to see ATi reign supreme for a while. This downtime should force Nvidia to learn a lesson: stop re-branding old tech and call it 'high-end'.
I'm in love with CUDA as well. Just seeing PhysX in action with SLi now is.. amazing... nothing short of amazing. -
i have yet to see it in action due tot he lack of support
i will get the 5 series if its the last thing i do ( i already have the 5850) -
Was about to order a Clevo M980NU with GTX 280M SLI, but if these are coming out Q1, I am not too sure if I should wait. A friend of mine told me to do so as the preformance boost would be imens. Would it be worth waiting for over the GTX 280M SLI considering how much money I am putting in to the laptop? Would it take a much longer time before Clevo will get a hold of the DDR5 in their laptops as I really want an 18.4''? Gave up the idea of i7 + SLI because of the power issues and had acctually given up DDR5 GPUs as I thought they would be out much later then it now seems like. Any thoughts?
-
i7 and SLI doesnt have power issues it has chipset issues thanks to intel being monoplistic turds
-
Hobo, you could wait until CES (in January) and see what Clevo has in store for us then. Although you would still be waiting even longer for what they showed off there to be available to the consumer. In my opinion, if you need an 18.4" portable monster right this moment, the M980NU will suit you just fine. Otherwise, wait and see what happens. -
M98nu refresh is what ur looking at in the future
-
Thanks for the answers to both of you btw -
the SHOULD be MXM 3.0b but i cant make any bets
It's all up to them and based on Clevo's history when they redesign their models they use them a couple times before dropping them.
I would say wait only because the GTX 280m i mean Quadro 3700 is old and crusty and you would benefit alot more in the long run just to wait a couple months and get 58xx .....
But hey i just hate Nvidia so don't take my word, but i usually say if you wait for the next big thing you will always be waiting so ... -
Hmm okei, if you say the GTX 280M is starting to get old I guess I should wait and see what happens in January then. If I am going to use so much cash I guess waiting for DDR5 could be smart in the long run. Too bad there are no 18.4'' with SLI and i7!!!
-
don't listen to Moo on GPU suggestions. He is a power freak when it comes to GPUs. I am pretty sure he would solder the DDR5 RAM on a 4870 if he knew there is a 1% chance of working.
He flashed a 260M GTX with a 280M GTX Vbios. That didn;t go that well. -
yes it did , it worked.
the only performance boost it wold have would be the stock clocks of a 280m. The 58xx series is worth waiting for easily
ATI Mobility HD5870 DDR5 GPU's VERY SOON...In a Clevo??
