This, we just saw two new notebooks come out this week with it as an option. I forget the names but one was MSI and another was OCZ.

From my understanding, AMD/ATI makes the Mobility GPU and sells it to partners much like in the desktop environment, where we have Asus / Gigabyte / MSI / Sapphire all producing cards alongside AMD/ATI's cards they produce for the consumer.
Here I have a picture to illustrate my point:
Above: Asus Z70V(Also known as the M7V) nvidia GeForce Go6600
Notice it's a "module card" that plugs into the motherboard?
My point? AMD/ATI or it's partners are quite capable of producing a graphics "card" that has an interface to the motherboard that nvidia designed and released to the industry to use.
For the record, ATI made an attempt to create their version of MXM called AXIOM before AMD bought them.

Cool. Some facts to back up my speculation

How does a picture of an nvidia 6 series card proves that the 4850 or other ATI card can be used in the same notebook without any other hardware changes? -
It doesn't prove anything, it merely allows you to imagine an ATI card that can be designed to fit with a nvidia MXM graphics module interconnect or MXM socket.
But, this picture should give you the answer you may be looking for:

Above is a picture of a Radeon x1800 or x1900 with a Type III MXM or MXM-III interface. -
That's nice.
