It is my understanding that v4 is the latest glossy screen and v5 is the latest matt screen in this model, right? Also the v4 should have better brightness and higher contrast than v5?

    Many thanks in advance

Can some B173HW01 owner shine some lights on difference between the two? Since the v4 has 90% gamut, does it mean it can reproduce color better than v5 assuming the ambient light cause no glare?

I need to pull the trigger today and your help is greatly appreciated!

I think you got it. The color reproduction on the glossy screen (v4) is going to be more vibrant. The matte screen while less vibrant, will not be nearly as glare prone.

Personally, I like matte screens since I live in a climate where I have glare issues.

I have the v4 screen and it is very nice indeed. It is clear and bright with good contrast, although the black level is just a bit higher than I expected. I cannot say that I notice the wider gamut compared to the Asus G73JH that I just replaced. In general, unless you are doing critical photography or other color related work, you probably won't see much difference between a 72% and a 90% gamut screen.

As for glossy or matte, it is up to personal preference. I prefer the more vibrant look of a glossy screen. But I understand that others prefer to have less glare.

    rep + for both

Does anyone know an another good panel that is superior than B173HW01 and is $500 or less?

I operate an custom frame shop and is thinking of demonstrate design digitally instead of with real samples the tradition way.

All my previous laptops are Sony except the m17x. I would like to find a panel that is equal or better than Sony's stock panel.

First thing you would need to do is find out what the stock panel in the Sony is. It's likely that they use various panels from an array of manufacturers. I have a Vaio F-Series which has a respectable panel...I think when I get home I'll find out what panel it is exactly.
