So the topic says it all, should I wait or should I pull the trigger? I read stock vs stock there is not much of a difference. But do the 880ms overclock better? What about throttling on both the 780 and 880? Is that still an issue? Is it still easy to get around it with a simple vbios change?
Also what about my choice in model? Is there something just around the corner I should look out for? Or is this model good for another 2 years in terms of design?

I wouldn't invest the type of money SLI 880Ms require, until we get a better grasp on when 20nm Maxwell will be ready.
-
Well once they come out they would be the same price as the current 780ms won't they? So buying now or buying later wouldn't result in a difference in price should it?
-
What the guy meant is, wait for gtx885m or something similar.
The reason being, these 880m's are not worth investing your money in.
They are confirmed to be 780m rebrands, with almost no performance increase.
As Cloudfire said in another thread, he suspects we may be getting gtx885m or gtx880MX in the mid-summer, which should be produced on a 20nm die process.
This would mean ~40-50% performance gain over the current flagship model.
Same story as with gtx675m (which was really a gtx580m rebranded) and then after 3 months came gtx680m (which you already have in your alienware machine).
A question: why do you need a new laptop since you already got one with gtx680m SLI? That thing has enough power to run everything right now.....does it not?Cloudfire likes this. -
I haven't updated my signature I actually sold my Alienware a while back. In that case I could always upgrade down the road if needed be right? If I wait for the 880's, the 780s should drop in price as well too shouldn't they?
The reason I plan on getting a gaming laptop again is because I plan to travel a lot again these upcoming months and it would be nice to have something as powerful as my desktop with me. -
Well....780's are out of stock almost everywhere and even if they have them in stock, they won't drop the price much (or even at all).
I have no idea what the compatibility will be for future upgrades, but in the past it has always been a hassle with all these modified drivers and VBIOSes that need to be put together in a distinct order, so the new hardware can work.
The best strategy with clevo is (and always has been) to wait for the best and pull the trigger for that money-shot.
In any case, if you cannot wait and if you are sure a gtx880m will work for your needs, then go for one.
In my case, Im currently waiting to see official game benches for gtx860m and the models that have these cards, so I may pull the trigger myself in the coming month(s). -
Yeah I definitely agree on your points but given that I am tight on time the most I could probably wait for are the 880s. I upgraded my Alienware m18x with 680ms and the only annoying thing about it was getting the proper modified drivers, the hardware installation was pretty easy.
As for whether the socket would support an 885 or 880mx that would be very likely we haven't seen a socket change in quite some time, given the 860ms which are based on maxwell use the same socket as far as I know I don't see it changing for the higher end models.
Thanks for all the help I'll contact xotic PC today to see if trhy have any form of eta on the 880ms. -
I think the unofficially official release date for 880M is March 12.
-
Thanks for the info rhutor that's not long off then.

No date we can confirm, but I would definitely wait.

If I had to buy a machine now it would be with a pair of 870Ms in the near future.
-
Wait for Maxwell.

Then a pair of 870Ms in sli is going to give the best value per $ of the 8xx series.

About to go all out on an np9570, should I wait for the 880m?
