Hi all, I've been lurking here for a few years on and off and after selling my macbook pro I finally got back to Windows and decide to get myself a nice laptop. I after comparing asus, msi, clevo and bunch of other brands, I decided to go with a Sager, the humble design just fits my personality.

i'm almost 100% sure on getting the NP8170, although I wish it could have the 95% matte like the 8150. pairing along with the i7 2630qm and ATI 6990M, hoping this can last me for a 2-3 years life cycle. The rest is pretty standard.

Now I was only wondering if I should go ahead and do the 8170 instead, 17.3 real estate is definetely nicer than 15, since mobility isnt really an issue, do any of u guys actually wish to have a 15.3 instead?

In addition, i've seen a lot of reseller rebrand sager under malibal, mythlogic etc, was wondering are they superior built to sager?

    thx to yall

Sager builds the machines that the resellers sell so you will be getting the same machine unless you buy from Mythlogic who build their own machines on Clevo's (like Sager does).

As far as the real estate is concerned it's really up to you, you probably won't notice the 95% gamut unless you do photo editing or anything like that. I have a 15.6 and I like it but I needed to have at least some mobility, had a 17'' for my last one and really disliked it.

I bought an 8130 through Malibal and was extremely pleased, I picked them because they had the best price for me. I have heard equally good things about xotic, myth and larry pc all of which are active around here and would be more than happy to answer any questions or concerns you might have. Malibal has always answered me within minutes.

No matter what I think you'll be really happy with your purchase I know I am. Best of luck and if you have any questions I would be happy to share what knowledge I have as well.

I went for the 15.6in over then 17in only for portability and the fact I think it was a bit cheaper then the 17in for the upgrades I wanted. Although I wish that I had 2x HDD bays like the 17in does. Also order from the resellers they all use the same chassis (same laptop) except the resellers are cheaper and have much better warranties and support. I went with Malibal and they were great, I'd definitely recommend them. The 6990M is amazing, I've had mine for about 3 weeks and it's my first gaming laptop or laptop ever in fact. You won't be disappointed!

The 15.6 screen is definitely a better idea for portability. Especially if you are going to use it in school on those tiny desks. Since portability isn't an issue, a 17 inch might be better. The slot for a second HDD is nice, but I wouldn't let that be the decider. The most important thing is what goes into the laptop; the 6990 in this case. Since you can get it with either laptop, that's not an issue. Sorry, I couldn't give you a better answer, lol.

And if you need 2 drives, you can change out the OD for a caddy, put in the second drive and use an external OD on the 15 inchers. This on the premise that you don't need/use an Optical Drive a lot.

I also have a few questions along this same thread (pun intended). As I dislike making new threads, I'll ask here.

If I get either an np8170 or 8150 with the 560m graphics card, will I be able to update to the amd 6990m? I think I read somewhere that there are different heatsinks or something.

Also, if I get an 8170 with the stock screen, will I be able to update to a 90% gamut screen in the future?

hey, to be honest, I'f i'm you, i would just get the 6990m straight ahead, as I did indeed. So less hassle and cheaper.

second, I was considering changing the screen and I can do it to a 92% gamut glossy, but the matte 90% is not available at the moment

If you want the 6990m, get it now for the $245. Otherwise, you'll be paying more later on, and you'll be stuck with a 560m that you probably won't be able to sell.

agree with previous post... im heavily weighing options due to 1 game in multiplayer and its due to video card... 560m just wont cut highest settings in multiplayer.... so i am looking at 485m vs 6990m, 580m seems too much more over these

Unless you need specific things that Nvidia does better than AMD, get the 6990m.

Not to mention, better 3D support with the 485m. It might be the better option for the ability to upgrade the laptop screen. However, if you use an external, there really is no reason.

Does Sager offer 3D lcd screen that can rival current 2D screen quality? If yes then I might consider 580m because I'm looking to have a new laptop

I think this is quite a problem lolll, because most current laptop lcd screen are based on TN panels although sager use some very high quality AUO pannels, it still can not compare to my IPS monitor, therefore if the 3d lcd screen is even worse than their 2d screen, I think it would be unacceptable for most people. However if you have a lower expectation in the beginning, then I think you will be happy with their 3d lcd screens.

Many are liking the quality of the 120Hz 3D-Ready Full HD Display featuring 72% NTSC Color Gamut in Matte for the 17.3' Sager NP8170 :)

Yes the 72% matte for the 17.3" LCD is what i choose in my build. It seems the best of both worlds in my book. And like someone else posted on here that unless you edit photos and such then you probably wont see any difference in the 72% vs the 9x% screens.

yeah exactly, you don't do photo editing on a laptop, or at least not using the laptop screen to correct colors.

and I'm guessing the hz will probably be easier on the eyes for the 3d screen.

For some reason I really do not like the 17" sized laptops. I just find them too big where a 15" is perfect for portability and usability. It all comes down to personal preference. I'd recommend comparing a friends laptop of comparable size or go into a retail store to see the sizes and figure out which you like better.
