Okay. I will be updating this thread with new scores all the time.
I overclocked my card a bit and reached 10025 points.

    Core bus: 756 mhz
    Memory bus: 901 mhz
    Driver: Nvidia Forceware 169.01

The GPU temperatures aren't reaching higher than 66-70 degrees on full load so I am quite sure I can push the card further.

    Stay tuned for more scores!

Wow man, well it seams that some people have to eat their shoes, including me :) I must say that Quad is doing wonders :) If I'm not mistaken the 8800M GTX will reach values never seen on a laptop as usual.

Please try Crysis Demo an tell us your experiences :)

Also can you share with us the link to the drivers you got? I've found this http://www.gamershell.com/news/42871.html. They seam to work for Vista x64 too.

    Trance
PS: Mine comes back fully loaded on tuesday, let's see how my Q6600 handles the job.

Did you use nTune or RivaTuner?

I'm disappointed that there seems to be a big difference between Vista 32 and Vista 64. Vista 64 should be at least as good... if not better. Turns out it's a bit of a dog at the moment.

I planned on OCing mine just after it arrived, but still stuck with no SLI.

Also I noticed there's no fan control FN key on the 9261s. The FN-1 key is now some sort of LCD switch or something. Do we need to mess with 'full fans' anymore?

My fans automatically turn on/off. It's hard to tell if they run at full power because they are so quiet!

I use nTune. I don't recall where I downloaded the driver. If I remember correctly, I simply did a google search for the Nvidia 169.01 driver.

I am sort of still searching for a program similar to ik8gui or whatever it's called for monitoring cpu/gpu temps.

Just ordered teh D901C from Xoticpc...

I will be going the Vista Ultimate 64 bit route..
The lower scores are definitely due to the crappy Nvidia drivers.
I need it more for virtualization anyway...
Still I can't wait to see what it scores...

I think we should also check certain OS tweaks to see if they help also.
I am also going to try Vista SP1 Beta... to see if there is an increase in performance.

    4gb DDR2 800Mhz Ram
    2xNVidia 8700M GT's in SLI config

I recommend disabling unecessary services as they tend to take up a few ressources. There are numerous websites containing various Vista tweaks and service guides.

Doesn't seem to change the fan speeds at all.

I tried nTune but the clock settings "pop" right back to the factory values after I press the "apply" button.

I've tried running as administrator, but no difference.

    Same with RivaTuner.

Possibly a vista 64 issue? Maybe a 56.75 driver issue?

    Very frustrating.

    Here's my scores:

    STOCK: 8776

    OCd: 9859

I duplicated johnelbek's settings with 756/901 using nTune. The peak temperatures were 75 and 69 C.

thats the Fan Toggle to help give the system as much airflow as possible.

its very useful during long sessions of gaming.

You do not even notice it much when you are focused in a game... especially if you are using headphones.

Fan toggle is still in the 9261s... like someone else I was getting FN+F1 confused with FN+1.

The fans do come on full blast -- a nice feature -- but a bit loud, lol. I have to turn them off to talk on speakerphone for conferencing.

Everything is running awesome with the 169.04 driver from laptopvideo2go.com.

I'm also using RivaTuner 2.05 which is EXCELLENT. I have it in my task bar so I can quickly apply OC settings using the Riva Launcher. I also have it put core temps and frame rate as an overlay when gaming. It works with Vista 64 -- no problems.

I've also added wPrime to the Riva Launcher and 3DMark. That way I can quickly execute benchmarks as well. I score 17sec in wPrime btw :D.

I'm running at 756/902 on the clocks. The shader clock is also controllable but i have it linked to the CPU clock right now so it scales as I OC the CPU.

With max fans (FN+1) my GPU temps peak at 60 C while overclocking at 756/902. I've tried a CPU clock of 801 but things quickly deteriorated in 3DMark06 :).

My last goal is FSB overclocking. Steponz is pursuing a new BIOS. I'm going to try messing with the PLL registers (been attempted by others without success so I'm not too confident). Lastly I may try shorting two pads on the bottom of the Quad so it autodetects as 1333 FSB. The problem with that (other than the obvious) is my Q6600 my not run at a clock speed of 3GHz -- but I won't know until I short the pads. A lot of work to figure that out.

My 3DMark06 score with a single 8700 was 5504. Not bad but it does get doggy when running games like Oblivion at 1920x1200. I suspected a single 8700 wouldn't drive that many pixels which is why I went SLI.

I ran for hours last night with max fans and OCing the 8700 without problems. If you know of any OCing issues with the 8700 please share.

I think that you can go furder on yours 8700M GTs... your temps are just as good as mine on my M570RU...

I can OC my single 8700M GT to something around:

    • 776mhz on core VS 625mhz default
    • 1800mhz on shader, huge oc from 1250Mhz default
    • 1000Mhz on mem VS 800mhz default

With that OC I can do somthing around 6200marks 1280x1024:

I even can do something around 784/1850/1050 but it´s to much for now... maybe later...

I think if you OC you shader to something near 1800, your mems to 1000, you should get something near 11K.

    ;)

I couldn't use the CPU clock setting... that wasn't stable on the Canyon Flight portion of 3DMark06.

    So I ran the following:

    CPU: 756
    Shader: 1700
    Memory: 1000

The result in 3DMark06 is 10264.

I'm going to ride with it for a while and see how it does in Oblivion and others.

Ever since I learned about FN+1, I use the fans on full while gaming, benchmarking, etc.

With those OC settings and fans on MAX, my GPU temps are 59-64C according to RivaTuner (which had identical temps to nTune).

I also added FPS and both GPU temps to the RivaTuner overlay. I can see them continuously while gaming :).

I haven't figured out how to show CPU temp using the RivaTuner overlay. That one is sort of pissing me off but it's not critical since I can't OC my CPU on this computer (which is complete and total BS).

For $3600 I should be able to OC my FSB or any clock.

    Thats awesome man.

Keep up the good work, just make sure to clean out the vents and fans every month or so. ;)

And you do not need to monitor the CPU temp as much as the GPU... from personal experience with these gaming notebooks.

Although if you want to show your CPU temps and such in RivaTuner, the plugins should be available in the 2.02 (and up) versions.
    - in Hardware Monitor, hit Setup, then Plugins, and check the ones you want to use.

Or go here (for RivaTuner Core 2 Duo Temp Monitor plugin):

I'm using the 169.04 driver with modified .INF file from laptopvideo2go.com. Here's the quick steps to install it:

    1. Download 169.04 driver from latptopvideo2go.com or nVidia.com
    2. Download modified .INF file from laptopvideo2go.com
    3. Run the 169.04 download which will extract all the nVidia files to your hard drive
    4. Copy the modified .INF file (step 2) into the nVidia driver folder from step 3
    5. Run the setup.exe in the nVidia driver folder

    Boom -- works awesome.

I also installed RivaTuner 2.05 (although there's a 2.06 out now). You can setup and save OC profiles then add them to the RivaTuner launcher (right click on RivaTuner icon in system tray to open launcher menu). The beauty part is you can have multiple profiles. Right before gaming I kick off my "OC 756/1000" profile. When I'm done I launch the "OC Stock" profile. Both of which I created in RivaTuner.

Also you can launch the RivaTuner Statistics tools which allows you to have a OSD with various monitor parameters (like GPU temp, FPS, etc).

I'm very pleased with how my 9261 performs. My only complaint is the inability to OC the CPU -- which is a HUGE bummer since the E/Q6600 is an overclocking animal.

I kick on the FN+1 max fans when I start gaming. The OC settings don't effect temps until gaming. Default activity using Windows uses a different power profile in the GPUs which isn't effected by the "performance 3D" clock settings in RivaTuner.

Auto-fans (no FN+1) do not get as fast as max fans. Temps without max-fans are about 10C higher (right around 70C for my GPUs) when gaming.

max fan setting is kind of a moot point as the system will just crank up the speed of the fans to compensate for heat incrementally. that's how it was designed for, really. so why put up with the added noise of max fan when you can just let the system control the speed and be quieter, even under full loads?

I've been gaming with Oblivion, GuildWars, and Supreme Commander with my OC settings (the same settings for 10k+ in 3DMark06). No issues reported so far and my temperatures are nice at 60C. The auto-fans do not make as much noise but do not spin as fast as using FN+1. The result is higher temps.

The question is whether or not 70C is still stable at those OC settings. I haven't tried it yet since I dig max-fans.

My thoughts exactly, especially given how loud the fans are at max in this machine.

Just to throw my two cents in...

I have a 5791 & a single 8700M GT. I use the 169.01 modded drivers from Laptopvideo2go. I use NTune for all overclocking. (It won't allow me to mess w/ the fans and the 5791 has no function key for fan control)

I am able to OC it to 750mhz core & 900mhz memory while keeping temps at around 60-65 degrees under full load. The laptop barely gets hot itself and I was able to run Hellgate London for about 6 hours straight yesterday. I have a feeling I can probably OC it even more. The current config (750/900) gets me about 3-400 more marks in 3dmark06 on default settings. (1280x1024, no aa) The highest mark I've gotten is around the 5400-5500 range. So I can definitely see two of them in SLI getting over 10k.

I am blown away at the stability, overclockability and dx10 performance of the 8700. 1440x900 on this native 1920x1200 screen still looks gorgeous and runs all the newer games at high settings at around 30-40 fps.

It's a pretty good card and from what I can tell so far, doesn't get enough praise.
