When I ordered my laptop I had configured the build to have a 750gb HDD in the main bay, and had replaced my optical drive for the optical bay hard drive caddy w/ bezel.

I want to install a SSD into the main bay and have the HDD (currently in the main bay) installed into the optical bay. This way I will be able to have my OS & other applications on the primary SSD while using my secondary HDD for storage.

My question is: Is there anything I need to do this other than the SSD? Or is it a simple procedure?

    - I plan on ordering either the crucial m4 256gb or the samsung 840 pro 256gb SSD - if that matters at all.
Also, any opinions on either of the two drives I am considering purchasing would be great as well.

    Cheers,

Both the optical and main bay are gen3 so really, you could put the new drive in the optical bay and it would make no difference. You can swap them round if you want, you may have to double check the boot order in the bios but that's it.

The optical drives on the P150 are SATA2 not SATA3. Only the main bay on a P150 is SATA3. On a P170 both the HDD bays are SATA3, while the Optical is still SATA2

Ah because they use a similar trace out to the P170EM.

Seems odd to waste a SATA gen3 port when you only have two, if only they had routed it to the mSATA slot instead.

So yes in that case you want the SSD in the primary slot, and the HDD in the optical bay, just double check the boot order after you have swapped them, but it should be fine regardless (it will delay another half second if it tries to look for a boot sector on the secondary drive before moving onto the primary if they are set to the wrong order).

    mSATA is SATA2 too.

That's why I said if only. It means one sata 3 port is wasted.

Make sure to check your SATA settings in the BIOS and send it to ACHI for the SSD, it may be IDE since there was a HDD installed in there originally.

I just happened to go into my BIOS yesterday and my SATA settings is set to ACHI and not IDE.. not sure if it would change once I add the SSD and whatnot, but thanks for the heads up!
