My one drive is nearing its capacity so I'm looking for a second to stick in there.

Can I just grab any 2.5" drive and expect it to appear as another drive or should I get a drive identical to the one currently installed?

Also, once I add a second drive I should be able to tell the OS, windows 7, to use the space as one contiguous drive, right?

If you mean the entire space of the new drive as a single contiguous drive, separate from your original drive, then yes. If you mean to have both drives combined as a single contiguous drive, you'd have to setup a RAID format, unless the 9850 can handle SPAN or BIG. The main reason to get a second drive identical to the one installed is so that you can get the best results for a RAID0 format; note however, that if you're going to setup a RAID0 format, you'll have to backup your data somewhere else, as setting up a RAID0 format will wipe both disks.

Thanks. You've answered my next question too. Shame that setting up RAID will wipe my drive.

Could I install two new drives set up as RAID0 then use my original drive to build the new ones? Sort of like a RAID5 but not really.

You should be able to, yes.
