Have ordered a Malibal Satori P170HM i7-2630QM with the Black Friday upgrade to 1600MHz memory (i.e., "(8GB) 8192MB, PC3-12800/1600MHz DDR3 - 2 SO-DIMM"). To bump up the laptop to 16GB I'd need to purchase another two 4GB sticks -- but how careful do I need to be purchasing memory? Just stick to name-brand memory, and get any PC3-12800/1600MHz DDR3 SO-DIMM memory? Or does a P170HM need something specific? Should I be concerned about latency on the modules?

For instance, Newegg lists a Corsair Vengeance model CMSX4GX3M1A1600C9 that's pretty inexpensive. Is there any reason to consider the Patriot PSD34G16002S or PSD34G1600SK (which cost a bit more)? Would the even more expensive Kingston HyperX (KHX1600C9S3K2/4GX) offer some sort of advantage?

I'm unlikely to do much playing around with tweaking memory speeds.

    Thanks for any thoughts,

    Mike

You can always run the scan over at the crucial website. Just a word of advice in adding another 8gb (2x4gb). Make sure the new kit you get matches the cas/timing/freq of the kit you already have so you run proper dual channel. Brand doesn't matter.

You really just need to make sure you get the same speed (1600Mhz PC3-12800) and the same type (XMP or JEDEC). The latter is really important because mismatched pairs won't work well together. Brand is not really important, nor are timings anymore (they used to be far more important in slower RAM). If you can match the timings, that's all the better though :)

I have not looked around much but curious how hard is it to get to the 2 memory slots under the keyboard on the P170HM? I found a youtube video on how to do it with the 150....assuming its pretty much the same?

It's pretty much the same. You have to pop out the bezel over the speakers to remove the keyboard. Once they keyboard it out, you should have access. here's a link to the service manual with a detailed guide (thanks to Theriko for posting it).

    Thanks :) Doesn't look too bad. :)

Turns out I may have to do some work tasks on my new Satori that requires min 12gb of memory and I got my laptop with 8gb(4x2gb) so I may just go ahead and replace all 4 with 4gb sticks. Not sure yet.
