I was wondering if it makes sense to order a laptop now during the current deals or wait until after the holidays - does anyone know if the big resellers usually offer discounts after Jan 1st? Not in a rush to get this laptop but if nothing big is around the corner might as well get it (8150).

hi Zenbane. As you probably have seen alot of resellers are offering the $100 off $1500 configuration. This is the best deal i've seen offered on Sager computers. Which makes purchasing now a great time. That's not to say that there won't be better deals later (also not saying there will be)
Alot of Brick & Mortar stores will have clearance sales after the holidays simply because they dont want to keep holiday specific inventory until next year. Or they stocked up too much on a certain model that they need to clear out. It would just take up space in the back room.
Online resellers typically dont have to worry about inventory levels like that so you dont see the clearance sales like that.

My question is what will prices do when the new models are announced early in 2012? I hate buying something so close to a new announcement and then seeing the price drop 30% to clear inventory.

The price will be dependent on what kind of stock the manufacturers have, what the new models change, etc. Last year, when Sager made their big change over to the new generations there were not a lot of huge price reductions since they sold through a lot of their models before the change occurred. Right now, that $100 off deal is the best deal I have seen from Sager (even when they did that change over).

For what it is worth, after having watched these things for years, the only reason to wait is for the model refreshes. Price cuts shouldn't be the deciding factor. January is typically when clevo updates their configurations to new chipsets and motherboards, but pricing by and large does not change all that much. The only exception is the occasional model where they overproduced expecting larger holiday sales, rather than across the board savings.

I can only recall that happening once in the past few years for Cleo/sager--not sure what it was but I remember it was a mid-range model and the price cut was I think about $200. (I'm thinking it was an m860t-something series). It didn't last long.

Mileage varies between brands. I typically only purchase Clevos, Asus and Lenovo brands. Big cuts among Clevos and Lenovos are rare. Asus had some substantial price cuts over the years for mid range gaming machines (g series), but when that occurred the end result was I couldn't justify the savings because the upgrade was substantial.

I have not been looking, but I don't recall seeing anything about substantial model refreshes coming up for January. Maybe the Sandy bridge e-series?

Honestly I can't wait to see how Sager will do with the newer models, not only will we see a dye-shrink but we'll also see possibly Optimus GTX-enabled video cards and a backlit keyboard. :D

Glad to see this post. I was turning this decision over is my mind as well. I guess you can always wait for the latest, greatest but at some point you have to take the leap. Plus, if I understand correctly, you can always upgrade the GPU after the fact correct?

From what we're hearing right now (not confirmed yet) the next gen GPUs will more than likely use the same MXM slot in the current laptops.

Thank's for all the info - is the refresh slated for Jan or just "revealed" in Jan and sold later in Q1 or Q2?
