I'm buying a shiny new sager np9170 in the third week of October and in order to accommodate my wallet for the 680m, the only other upgrade I'm getting is the IC diamond compound for the gpu and cpu. I'll be buying parts (32gb mSATA, two 750gb hdd's, and 16gb of ram) separately, but!
I was wondering if it is possible to find a disk drive this monster. Granted, it has a DVD drive already, but I'm looking for a blu-ray drive.
Like I said, my plan is to grab and install upgrades over time to save myself from a massive (or, what I think is massive) upfront cost so any links or recommendations would be really helpful.

the resellers do allow you to choose a blu ray driver or dvd drive. also i would recommend against getting IC diamond, since its alot cheaper to do it yourself

I'm actually wanting to buy the drive later down the road. The plan so far is laptop this month and extra parts in two chunks next month. Bills and x-mas shopping...
I guess I could to the thermal paste myself. I've just never done it before. :S I could probably find something YouTube. -
its really really easy and fun

You can get a Panasonic or LG internal blu ray drive on newegg or amazon. Cheap ones are like $40-50 and you get faster and better quality ones for upwards of $120. Also they have read only and read write drives, the former being cheaper of course.

Okay. I didn't know if they'd fit or not. Righteous. I'll check them out and add them to the ol' parts wishlist.
Thanks a lot for the recommendations. I really appreciate that. -
Amazon.com: Panasonic UJ240 6x Blu-ray Burner BD-RE/8x DVD±RW DL SATA Drive (Black): Computers & Accessories
Got this one back in February for my G73 which I relocated to my Sager. Was originally $90. So far it's held up decently. Does take awhile to start reading though (was always like this). DOWNSIDE. You WILL need to purchase or "acquire" blu-ray reading software for playing movies. Software ranges anywhere from $40 to $100+. So really, it'd probably be more effective to just order the computer with a blu-ray drive in it for cost efficiency if your morals prevent you from arr mateying it up.
If you do plan on purchasing one and installing it yourself, it HAS to be a slim drive. -
Any optical drive with the form factor like the one Srikar linked would fit in your laptop just fine. Don't worry about the front face bezel as that can be removed and swapped with the one in your system.
I'm not really sure why you opted for the 32GB mSATA drive, you could save money and get a much larger mSATA drive later for a decent price. Crucial mSATA drives are pretty impressive and you can get up to 256GB for about the same cost as the 2.5-inch SSD.
As far as applying thermal paste on your own, killerrobotjews had an excellent post in these forums back in June. HERE is the link. -
i feel what people are forgetting is that the msata slot only support SATA II speed, so around 250mb/s read/write speed, so if you get a 500mb/s read write speed that is almost a waste of money, so i would recommend getting a 2.5 inch ssd
-
I doubt that the average user would be able to put a SATA III SSD next to a SATA II SSD and tell the difference in boot times or load times unless they are moving massive amounts of data around.
Now compared to a standard platter drive, the mSATA SSD would even make a world of difference in performance. -
The reason I'm getting only 32gbs for the mSATA is because its going to be for the os only. If I'm going to have the slot I may as well use it, right? I think newegg has them for around 40 or 50 dollars. Besides, even with ordering the base configuration with 680m and installing those extras in November, I'm looking at a total in the ballpark of two grand.
