wow, first a giant drop in the 6990 and then this?

If the resellers drop the price as well, I think they will have a looot of upgrades popping up!

    From Sager:

Every company / brand has their own pricing strategy and structure for upgrades. Price comparison should not be done at the component upgrade level, but at the complete build and the features it offers.

Yeah. waiting for answer to my ticket about my satori order. But Im still not gonna change the 6990 I opted.

well maybe if the give 580 for the same price than 6990 :)

Very true. They are making up the money from that "discount" on the GTX580m. Look at their ram as just one example, an extra $200 to go from 8Gb of 1600Mhz ram to 16Gb's. Bet you can't find a Sager / Clevo reseller with that kind of price increase. Do a full spec on an Alienware and it still comes out a couple hundred more than a Sager / Clevo.

I wouldn't expect Clevo/Sager to be able to drop the prices of the GPU's as they are already realistic in their overall build prices. Dell, was not. And still even now, the limiting choices Dell offers with the AW17x R3 would force me to spend $900 more than I spent for my Clevo P17HM3, for about a 5% performance increase (Dell forces faster CPU, and no option for a GTX485m, compared to what I was able to customize.) Actually the primary reason I went with Malibal is because they were the only ones I could find still offering the GTX485M, for half the upgrade cost of the GTX580m, and I didn't think the $245 extra for the 580m was justifiable at this point in time.

In the end, this is good ol competition at work, and the consumer will benefit. Dell's prices were truly "alien", this move brought them back down a little closer to earth...

Dell/alienware may have gotten a special discount from nvidia due to the volume of parts they purchase as well. Pretty sure sager and possibly other clevo resellers don't come close to the volume. I also out of curiosity did a pricing and pretty much the alienwares were still 200+ more than sager equivalent.

Plus you must pay sales tax in any of the 50 states, that can be pretty a pretty signifigant amount on a $2k laptop depending on your tax rate.

To be fair though, most states require you to pay sales tax even if you don't pay it to the retailer. It might be listed as a "use tax" on your end of year forms.

As mentioned it is the overall, to your door cost, is what should be considered.

The Clevo/Sager models will most always give you 'the most bang for the buck'. :)

Alienware may have decreased the upgrade cost for the 580M, but the other upgrades (CPU, RAM, HD, etc.) will still cost you an arm and a leg.

2-3 weeks ago, when I was looking for a german reseller to get my Clevo P150HM from, I stumbled on Hawkforce and they had "GTX offer" promotions on both P150Hm and P170hm. The price was dropped. So this is nothing new for me. Alienware still costs like hell!

Here they are: HawkForce - NOTEBOOK

I would think it is Nvidia that drops the price. They have to be getting killed in the high end mobile gpu market.

NVIDIA for some time now has charged premium prices for their mobile cards.

The thing is they are NOT suffering from a lack of sales. :)

They should! Look at AMD - their 6990M is AWESOME and costs 280 EURO less! Man, thats 280 EURO!!!!

I understand, it has physix. Okay, it has better driver support. Yes, many games are optimized for it. BUT thats 280 EURO!! For that, I can upgrade with a high-grade SSD and still get the same performance....Or I can save me the 280 EURO for something esle.

Next year, I expect them to do better price-wise. If not, Im gonna stick to AMD no matter how much "better" nvidia is. I support lower pricing over greedyness.

You would obviously know better than i, but i would think the 560m is driving that sales bus. Pretty sad considering it's a card the barely outperforms cards released almost 2 years ago.

compared to the price of 6990m I think 580m is far too overpriced. $275 is more like it considering 6990m upgrade from Sager is only $145

It'd be nice to see a drop on 580Ms in Sagers, but I highly doubt it will happen. The price difference between similar spec Alienware and Sagers is ridiculous. It's just another way for Dell to try to stay competitive.

Sager/Clevo is still by far the best price to performance value.
For the specs on my 8170 laptop, 2.2Ghz i7, 6990m, 8gb RAM, I was able to get the price down to $1350.00 shipped after discounts, a promocode and doing a wire transfer. Nothing comes close to that in terms of value, and Alienware charges an arm and a leg for their memory upgrades, so there is no question Sager/Clevo is still the value leader in this segment.

The history of pricing on the nVidia cards like the 580M seems to indicate that there will not be much of a change... if any.

The AMD 6990M is certainly the 'biggest bang for the buck' right now. :)
