I've read that earlier clevo models have trouble recognizing the temperature sensor in alienware based gpu cards. Is this still the case with the sm series laptops?
For example would an alienware gtx 780m work in a clevo p157sm laptop? Would it work straight away, or would it need system/video bios flashing or just not work at all?
Has anyone tried this with the newer laptops before?

Most likely it will not work at all. There have been rare but reported incidents of older generations taking a Dell card, and even that required a vBIOS flash.

We haven't seen/heard of any of the current models taking a Dell card and working yet.

I've seen one example of a Dell card working, but the screen brightness couldn't be adjusted. Can't remember any details so will have to hunt for the thread, but yeah don't use AW cards in Clevo laptops.

If you haven't bought it yet it would be best to skip the risk and get a Clevo GPU.

Alrighty here we go. The thread I was talking about earlier about a Dell GPU working in a Clevo laptop but with issues.

That is the only one I've seen where someone has gotten a Dell card to work. There are also dozens of post where people got a Dell card and it would not work.

Buy the Clevo card, they use better parts anyway.

Example - the Dell 880M uses Hynix memory and the Clevo uses Samsung. Samsung has a record of better GDDR5 than Hynix.

That is not entirely true. My Clevo 7970M uses Hynix memory. I think that it is just a matter of GDDR5 availability/price.

AMD cards use Hynix but Clevo nVidia cards use Samsung as opposed to Dell using Hynix. Although either is obviously better than Elpida, in the case of 880M Clevo has the upper hand on Dell.

Not entirely true again :). Clevo used Hynix H5GQ2H24AFR, Hynix H5GQ2H24MFR and Samsung K4G20325FD GDDR5 in their 7970M cards. Clevo might have used even wider variety of modules; these three GDDR5 types are supported by VBIOS of my card.

    EDIT:
I just had a look at another Clevo 7970M VBIOS - from a P150EM. Clevo also used Elpida EDW2032BBBG.

    EDIT2:
Just out of curiosity I had a quick look at Clevo MXM3.0 cards on eBay. They come with GDDR5 in all flavours, both AMD and NVidia cards.

Nobody is talking about AMD cards. Who cares? Clevo uses Samsung for their 880M cards that have been seen thus far and as far as I'm aware, their 780M and 680M used Samsung as well.

There is even a thread here about Dell vs Clevo 680M: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...overclocking-dell-hynix-vs-clevo-samsung.html

Here it is about the 780M

Since clevo get theirs cards manufactured for them specifically and in batches the brand of ram can change.
