hey I may be getting a np8660 soon from Powernotebooks with this setup.
    t8600 cpu
    9800gtsgpu
    160gb 5400 hd
    and 4bg ram.

I choose this because I will only be doing mostly university work , graphic design stuff , autocad photoshop illustrator etc and some gamming (wow, warIII ) and this will probly go a long way and plus I can upgrade later.

Is there any discount you guys know of beside the wire transfer thing?
because this is gonna cost around 1868 dollars and its a bit over my budget.
    thanks

The Sager NP2096 should run those games fine so you can save some money.

Another way is to upgade the RAM your self.
And CPU does not really need to be faster than 2.4GHz for most games.

The 8660 is based on the new centrino 2 platform. It was actually made to compete with the alienware m15x type machines.

The 5793 is also a beast. I say they both go head on head..

but you get a faster processor, better hard drive, blu-ray read drive, all at a much lower price. This notebook weighs around 8.5 lbs, the 8660 weighs around 7lbs.

This notebook isn't going to go on sale.... it might go down in price if a newer similar notebook is released or components go down in price, but yeah, I wouldn't wait for a sale. This isn't dell or something ;) These are near-wholesale prices, imo.

Cooling's great on this notebook, all except for the hard drive, which runs warm (55Cish, some people get idling at 58C or so (I was), so buy a more recent gen HD and get a cooler (idles at 46C-48C now, load HD is 50C). I haven't managed to get my cpu (P8400) above 59C after an hour of orthos stress testing, and my gpu temp during gaming is in the mid 60s.

Get the base config + try for the cash discount, which is $1630, unless you want an extended warranty (which you can add later through your reseller, no?). 2GB of ram is plenty.

(Notebook + battery is 7.1lbs, I guess the extra weight is the AC adapter)

The only way to get better prices is to contact your reseller directly - it doesn't hurt to try!

I had a NP5793 only thing that bothered me was its size. Weight wasnt an issue, and i do have a NP8660 now. I find it easier to fit more stuff into my bag now with this laptop and my bag doesnt buldge out all wierd with the smaller NP8660. I havent had a cooling issue with NEITHER system

mmmmm.. I could deal with $1868 for the 8660 and I know its a great price for what Im getting but I only have around 1400 myself and the rest goes from my moms pocket and asking for 300 bucks is fine but 468 is a bit too much , ill try to convince her but you know moms shes gonna be like 1868 dollars for a notebook!!!! your crazy, but I really love everything about this notebook and its future proof which is important.

Ill try selling some stuff to cover an extra 300 or so then its not that much to ask for 168 from my mom.

Everytime I think of how much money Im gonna spend makes me think to get something cheaper but looking at Montevina/4gb ram ddr3 /9800gts makes me want to cry of happiness

    Thanks guys

The only time Sager systems go on sale is if Sager has a sale. All the resellers are restricted to minimum advertised pricing, which is why you'll notice that we all have roughly the same prices. We can sell for less, just can't advertise for less - that's why you should always contact the company directly for the best deal :)

Resellers wouldn't have it, only builders. Try AVA Direct, PC MicroWorks, M-Tech, Killer Notebooks...they all still seem to have leftover 9800M GT barebones left in stock.

Killer Notebooks will be more expensive; I don't know about some of the others. Multiple people have been happy with their reasonably priced PCMW one (should be around PNB/Xotic prices?) but they don't offer any lower end options so that's probably bad. The 9800GTS isn't a huge drop down, by the way, and would save you enough money so that asking for $160 from your mom would work out sooner than later ;) This might be a good option for you as well:

    http://www.rjtech.com/nb15.htm

Barebones w/ 9800GT + cpu should be around $1600 with shipping. Buy 2GB sticks for about $80 from newegg each (buy 1), and whatever hard drive you want ($100ish) (don't forget to add the wireless lan card) - or do a base at around $1774. Check Prostar and some resellers like Lynnbay too.

PCMW is way overpriced right now because they tag you with 1333Mhz ram and whatnot.

    I just looked at this
    barebones from rjtech :
9800gt+p8600+wireless and all the standard stuff
    total $1,654
    and from newegg:
    2x Crucial 2GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model CT25664BC1067 -
    1xSAMSUNG Spinpoint M Series HM160HI 160GB 5400 RPM SATA 1.5Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - OEM
    total $209
    so everything $1863 Nice!!
my only problem is that my friend will be bringing this for me to Chile so I have no warranty but I guess is the same as If i got the same setup made, still run the same risk right?
ill be saving around 80 bucks this way which is nice and i get gt.

is there anything else I need to build this thing this way?
    thanks in advanced

Yeah, I just went and configured and your cpu choices are also limited to an extreme or one of the highest ones. Ehh.... RJtech is looking better and better, if PNB/Lynnbay/Prostar doesn't have any 9800GTs left.

Yes, ram and HDD are super easy to install on this notebook. Literally click it in and/or connect the HDD and screw it in. The entire bottom of the notebook lifts off:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=290880 for pictures. RAM should be -at most- $80/2gigs at newegg (maybe a bit less now, or when you get your notebook); look there or zipzoomfly for deals on both. If you like you can also buy ram and a hard drive from RJTech (and an OS too) if you want them to put it together for you (i.e. they don't =just= sell barebones) but that's about, oh, $30-50 extra from doing it yourself (then again you'll be paying for shipping on the ram & hdd! so your choice). Might want to price an RJtech system and decide - I *think* ram might be a good idea to buy from Newegg, but RJtech had good deals on Hard drives. $10 savings or so tops at that point.

I also assume that DarkSmiley has no 9800GTs, or else I'd recommend you contact him as well, as he's a reseller :D

The only other thing that you need, I guess, is an operating system :) Keep in mind that XP does not come with SATA drivers and you need to slipstream intel's sata drivers onto XP in order to run in RAID/ACHI/SATA mode (faster, cooler hds - a big drop for this system and the only thing that isn't perfect or beyond perfect). I wrote a post detailing how to do this here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=305933&page=2

You might want to consider buying a Zalman NC2000 sometime as it does wonders for the heat level of this system (which runs cool - warmish hard drive, and will run even cooler with a cooler), but that can wait. I don't know the temperatures where you're at, but if it's above 26C often it's a good idea.

thanks guys you rock +rep for you guys , you are probably the nicest guys ive met here. I have a friend with a vista ultimate 64 here in chile so ill just install it once it gets here.
I was thinking of just getting a samsung 160gb because it seems to run a lot cooler than others, and I can always install games on an esata for a faster drive/space.

btw is crucial a good RAM brand? or should i get something else?
    thanks again

RJTECh seems to be the best place to get the barebone.

Get the wireless along with the barebone. Buy RAM, hard drive and processor from newegg. You will end up pretty smooth..

Patriot, crucial and corsair all use micron chips. So they are more or less the same ( and the best ).

The latest 200, 250 and 320 GB 7200 rpm hard drives have very good transfer speeds. You can stick to 160GB as well .. but remember.. hard drive manufacturers state the capacity in 1000 orders, but actually it is 1024. so your 160GB hard drive will end up as 152.6 GB ..

thinking about it I think im gonna get gts barebone so i can even make it cheaper and from what ive heard its almost the same , if it can play crysis fine then that fine with me , I will probably not play anything more graphic demanding than crysis.
ill post my final build so you guys can check it out and tell if its ok and if I need anything else.

Apart from eurocom, everywhere else i am finding the fingerprint reader as DEFAULT.

Even in the PIC of the notebook in the RJ TECH site, you can see the fingerprint reader..

    BEST: mail them ..

Yeah, it seems to be integrated into the chassis and I wonder if Eurocom yanks it out and resells it or something ;) Nearly positive that it's in the RJTech chassis, or they would offer it as an extra option.

Looks like a good config. You might want to only buy 2gigs, as few games even use over than (do any, actually? I only know of graphics programs that do), as the memory's kind of expensive now, but your choice. Good deal otherwise :)

Does anyone know is pro-star still has 9800m GT's in stock? I just ordered my NP8660 from them and chose that option so I'd assume they still have it but who knows?
