I was installing Skyrim mods in Nexus when the screen suddenly flickered and shifted 50% sideways. The edges where in the middle of the screen. Before I could restart it it powered of by itself.
Trying to reboot only gives a black screen. It lights up after a while but stays black. I hooked it to my tv but theres no signal.
The power button and charge indicator are on, all other leds are of. Right now it doesnt power of by itself, it just sits there with a lit up black screen and fans blowing.
Fn+1 starts the fans on 100% so it is responding.
Are there some more troubleshooting I could do? Is it a dead gpu or can it be something else?
Ive never had any problems or overheating before, if its indeed dead it came without warning![]()
Update 11/8: It was indeed the gpu, confirmed by reseller.

That's how the 6990M does it: shows you some bad pictures then off it goes. Now mine didn't power off by itself, just stuck with no display. If you can't test with another card, just eliminate anything else then bake your card. You can check if your machine is booting up by looking at the HDD activity light.
-
What more can I do to eliminate anytjing else?
The hdd light goes on and off during boot but then stays of. At this point Fn+1 works. -
This happened to me today
but with nvidia 580m. What makes this even worst is I've only watched Netflix and did daily browsing tasks with my sager. Never really gamed on it except first day I received the computer just to experience the cutting edged graphics.
When I press power, the laptop turns on, stays on black screen then turns off for 3 seconds then automatically turns on again with fans at normal speed... but screen stays black no matter what and never shows startup or bios menu. Any help would greatly be appreciated -

I think it's the card too
Baking might be your best option with looking around for a good value replacement.

@Najsman; Well my old 6990 was only used two month before I did the 7970 upgrade. I had it on Tradera for a while, but no one bought it. PM me if you are interested.
-
Well, Id rather its the gpu than something completely unfixable.
Turns out I have 5 days left on my 2 year warranty. I have dropped an email to my reseller but Im not holding my breath on that one. Still, you never know. Are old dead gpus usually covered by warranty?
I will probably try the baking method as soon as I can. Should the black plastic cover surrounding the core be removed? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ATI-6990m...raphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW&hash=item2c6d4fba13 (just random 6990m)
Also Im a bit worried as someone stated the fumes can be dangerous, it is after all the oven I cook in.
Im also looking for a replacement, but the supply of 7970m on ebay seem scarce atm. Cant actually find a single one that isnt Dell or MSI.

- Id like to be as sure as possible it is my gpu. Are there anything else I can test? Clear the cmos, anything? Just dont want to buy a new gpu and discover it doesnt help..
- Iirc some people with dead 6990m could still boot in safe mode. Id like to try that but since my screen is black I need help with the keyboard commands. Could someone with P150HM please describe what to press? As in F8, 2 up, enter or something like that.
If the screen wakes up, wouldnt that confirm its indeed my gpu? -
Do you have the boot screen? If not, mostly likely GPU.
Do you get anything on external monitor? If yes, screen or connection is broken. If not, GPU
If you just wanna boot into safe mode, spam F8 for like 20 sec then hit Enter -
I never see anything on the screen. At first its completely black, after awhile it kind of lights up but its still black. I get no signal when I hook it to my tv. So it is the gpu then.
Id still like to boot though, I have some backups to do.
Edit: F8 + enter wont work. Tried 1 down and 2 down before enter, this lights the num lock led but the screen dont light up at all. So no safe mode for me. -
Your best bet is waiting on a reply from your reseller.
Even better - phone them if you can.
They should cover this in the warranty if you havent fiddled around with overclocks, overvolting and such.
Or at least they should help upgrading to 7970m. -

I'm sure you may have heard this while researching solutions for your card but the 6990 kind of has a troubled past. I know it doesn't help you much now
but just in case it someday factors in, I've seen a lot of customers with 6990 issues (as compared to other cards). I've posted about that one before, apparently AMD supposedly fixed the 6990s up later on in production runs but even though it's a good card when it's working, for some reason those things just have a higher failure rate than other models. I saw you mentioned getting an upgrade or replacement from your vendor. Good job there, maybe someday the thing to do would be to go with a different card.

Yes having read more and more threads over the year about 6990ms just rolling over and die I was kind of waiting for my turn
I was starting to think mine would last but nope. BF4 aside the timing was good though, with a sliver of warranty left. Otherwise Id have tried baking it and option three get a replacement.
I suspect my reseller wont have any 6990m lying around and they will offer a gpu from last year. Am I correct that 6990m is a good deal faster than a 670m and slightly slower than a 675m? They will offer some kind of upgrade and Im trying to figure out what to expect. -
The 675M is on par with the 6990M I believe, while the 675MX is faster. The 670M is about 15% slower.

They offered a 7970M for a reduced price so I took it. Arrived today and working like a charm

Cool, at least it's a nice upgrade.
-
Nice. I bought my P150HM used so no reseller support, had to get a 680M. Your new card should be twice as fast while running cooler. Enjoy
-
It sure is. Don´t need to tell anyone here how good a 7970M is, I´m kinda late to the party, but I´m seeing massive improvement in 3DMark and Planetside 2. Good stuff
More testing tomorrow.

Yeah, hopefully we can get an increase next gen of a similar amount but the 7970M is going to be top for a while longer.
-
I regret getting the 680M over the 7970M now. No sleep, no fan control = driving me nuts. Now I have to get a notebook cooler and cut some extra vents on the back cover if I don't want to use 100% fan speed.

Another 6990m bites the dust?
