Hey all, while waiting for my lappy to arrive from XOTICpc, I decided to buy a new backpack. What has been bothering me a lot is that I have to buy a sleeve and a new back pack. Honestly I don't think my backpack needs a dedicated laptop section because I will put the sleeve in anyway, therefore taking consideration of how hevy this machine already is, and the power brick and mouse and my schoolwork, I need the sleeve to be light and somehow protective. The backpack it self needs to be awesome looking and good quality. I was trying to convince myself for the targus xl but I failed to do so of its appearance. I have my eyes on a slappa stovepipe but no one actually reviewed it here.
Therefore a good price sleeve ( and btw, what's neoprene anyway?) + an ergonomic backpack is all i need.
thanks to yall!

Actually several months back, maybe around last winter this was discussed quite a bit. Many posting on the forum then liked the ones posted at Slappa.

I'm personally going with the Wenger Pegasus... durable and just big enough to fit a 17"
-
thx to you two, but i actually could not find it so any input would be very helpful haha

I've been using the AstroGaming backpack. It's subtle, looks good, comfortable and it can store a lot:

ha , that backpack really looks awesome, I finally went for an oakley revolution. now i'm looking for a good sleeve haha , the belkin aparently does not work with my p170hm, so any suggestions?

Slappa Mask. High quality and thoroughly thought out in its design. Can fit 17 in notebook no problem. Only thing is its a bit expensive but the quality is worth it in my opinion. Slappa has nice sleeves too.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm a network administrator and do some traveling for work. For the times that I am on the road multiple days instead of just hours I will be taking my 15" work laptop, my personal laptop (p170hm), hdd docks, tons of cd's/dvd's, all kinds of cables, spare parts, etc, etc.
So, I'm thinking I need to go the same route and get a bag with a large main compartment instead of a dedicated laptop pouch and buy two sleeves to put the laptops in. My old rucksack would probably work, but it's not exactly aesthetically pleasing. -
ha i see you are on a same boat as i am and if anything ever cross your mind please let me know

I've been looking at all kinds of bags trying to find one that will work well and I like the looks of. Looked at the Mountain Hardware Enterprise Daypack, The North Face Big Shot, Jansport Odyssey, Slappa Sypder Proand The North Face Overhaul
So far I'm leaning towards the TNF Overhaul or the Odyssey. I like the looks of the Odyssey the best and the Overhaul is just massive, should have no issue fitting everything in there. -
Slappa is made with notebooks in mind, with the transportation of them being the crux of their design. Many other brands claim they can carry a 17inch notebook (which, they may very well can), but don't design backpacks for laptops, as Slappa does.

. Still, $80 is pretty hefty... I feel crazy for buying my $66 bag... I mean, a backpack has no function except bringing your stuff from place to place, so it's pretty darned expensive if you think about it.
-
Anyone personally have any of the bags that can talk about their quality? -
I have a different mindset and don't mind paying money for a good quality bag if it will last, is comfortable on my back, and can carry all my stuff. -

Well I just got my Wenger Swissgear Pegasus and it looks really nice... pretty slim for being able to fit a 17.3" and not a ridiculous hiking bag... compared next to my old Jansport, this bag is only 1" or so larger.
The back part is padded and really nice. -
I originally had a small SwissGear bag (purchased at Costco). However, it was way too small for what I needed, and thus I had to go with a bag of greater capacity. Hence, I purchased this bag: Oakley Arsenal Pack | Oakley Store | Canada
Although it was very comfortable, cheap (it was on sale at the time of purchase) and spacious (33 liters), it just wasn't a laptop backpack, although the manufacturer claimed it to be as such. I later returned it and purchased a Slappa backpack, and it's far better suited for carrying laptops than the Oakley. -
I picked up the alienware 17 inch Orion backpack. Build quality is high, lots of space. Only regret is no dedicated pocket for a power brick this size. There are lots of reviews on the web, so I recommend checking them out, but feel free to ping me for info if need be.

I decided not to buy a laptop backpack, I already have a backpack.
On the other hand I felt that a laptop sleeve would not be enough protection for my investment. In the end I decided I would get a metal case, stylish, lots of protection and you also get that 'walking around with a million dollars' look.

... that's alternative but i guess if you are happy with it then congrats haha
-
Getting a briefcase would be ridiculous for informal usage though... who walks around with a briefcase for school/or.. if you arn't in school, whatever other informal events you would need to attend to. You know, shorts + briefcase just don't go together.
IMO, I like AVOIDING the "walking around with a million dollars" look that places a bullseye "STEAL ME" on your laptop XD -
sigh.... -
BTW, as promised to give you guys an updtae, I decide to go with a north face ON Sight, i know it's 2010 model and discontinued, this is also why i found it for 80 dollars.

Your laptop might be just a little too big but if you can get a hold of a Targus T.A.N.C bag it is well worth it. This is the bag we give to school kids for their laptops and it can take one hell of a beating and the laptop inside remains undamaged (we saw a massive drop in the number of laptop being brought in damaged as soon as we introduced this bag).

I have a Targus TXL617 Backpack, a Targus 17" Sport Backpack, and a Mobile Edge SecurePack 17 (for when I am riding my ZX14) and all three of them fit both my P-7811 FX and my NP8170 without issues. I have used the TXL617 on a daily basis for over 3 years and it looks like new and has served it's purpose well.

It fits my back perfectly, allowing for maximum comfort, when used with one strap or two. The single handle on top is sturdy and well stitched; strong enough that I had no concerns carrying it down stairs simply by the handle. There is about a quarter of an inch of padding underneath the laptop when the backpack stands up straight. The "feet", if you will, are also under there giving it a bit more breathing room between the laptop and the floor as well.
Another backpack thread for Sager p170hm
