I am looking to purchase from Xotic instead of Eurocom because I like their configurations better. However, I am curious of what is in store for me if I were to make this purchase.

If I order a laptop from Xotic, I am assuming I am responsibe for Canadian taxes (GST+PST?), shipping fees (no idea how much this would be, I'm in Ontario), and any US-Canada fees (again, I have no idea).

So if my laptop is currently $2429, what am I looking at? Any Canadians like to share their experience?

whats wrong with eurocom?? they should have the exact same config and will compete with xotics prices. i see you live in ontario. that means only 5% tax, which is only 100$, and 39$ shipping. im going to order from them.

ordering from xoticpc... you will pay shipping ( at least 60) and brokerage ontop of that (about 80). you then have to pay GST and PST totaling over 300$. you pay this to the UPS driver who delivers it when it gets to your door.

so for you, ontop of 2500$, your looking at atleast 2800$

eurocom can compete, saving you alot of money, its also easier to return back to eurocom

    hoped that helped :)

In Canada, you still have to pay both the PST and GST...
But that's still no reason to not go for Eurocom as long as the prices are competitive.

actually you can choose how you get taxed... either a student discount for ontario and quebec, letting you only pay 5% tax. theres a few other options but this one works for me and i think many others

Wow, now that I look at it, Eurocom might be the way to go. I just wasn't pleased with some of the costs associated with their upgrade options (compared to Xotic), but the additional fees more than cancel those out.

And Eurocom has a student discount? I was not able to find this on their website. If I only have to pay $39 shipping and 5% tax, I will buy my computer right now.

what do you mean - 5% student discount? when i talked to them. the student discount was on the tax, from what i understand and what was told, the Gov/Med/Edu tax is only 5% because thats what students save.the government gives the discount to students going to school.

i may be wrong about this but this is what i was told. i would be happoer if i was wrong.

link1313, if you are going to buy the M860TU and remove everything, why don't you just go for the cheaper NP2902 (don't know what Eurocom calls it, they may not sell it now) 15" notebook? Try looking into that, they may have it just not listed.

http://www.eurocom.com/ ---> Click on 'Future' ---> Then click on 'Students'

Im fairly positive a discount if different than tax. It says nothing about the tax in there.

Well I didn't remove everything :) . I already have an operating system, will transfer my wireless card from my old laptop (which is turning into a desktop), and I have no need for bluetooth or express slot. Also I would prefer to own a Clevo instead of a Compal.

I was not aware of this. Where is the option to choose this student discount? It never came up throughout the entire ordering process and UPS never gave me the chance to bring up any discounts.

edit: oh, you mean from eurocom?

I just priced out my M860TU on Eurocoms site... 2700, From Xotic it's costing 2150+150 for the CAN/US currency convesion+ another $2-300 in tax... totaling max $2500Can still saving at least $200 ordering from the US. The Eurocom site also has several options for order that shouldn't be available for the notebook.

You need to deal with more than just currency conversion when buying from the USA, assuming you buy with Visa (or any other bank funds in US). However, your price estimate of $2,500 is accurate.

(assuming this is total with shipping)
$2,150 USD = $2,347.99 CAD (including 2.5% Visa conversion rate)
    + customs taxes ($5 + 5%) = $2,470.64 CAD from XoticPC

However, Eurocom will do this (I can confirm this):

    XoticPC USD = $X USD
Eurocom will sell it for: $X CAD + shipping ($39/$59, depending) + tax (5% if student or in NT, NU, AB, etc. that have no PST/HST)

    Therefore...

    Eurocom price:
    $2,150 CAD + $59 (worst case scenario) + 5% = $2,319.45 CAD from Eurocom

I am giving Eurocom the awareness they deserve. So many people (me included) do not know that they will bargain. They can, being direct Clevo distributors, like Sager. They don't ONLY sell the notebooks like the US resellers, they build them and sell them. Some of the other resellers probably buy from them as well as Sager.

If I was in the USA, I would probably go for either PNB or XoticPC. But, being Canada, you might as well get from Eurocom. That way, if you have an issue, you only need to mail it within Canada.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Eurocom. I did hate their website layout though admittedly.. but when I configured the same laptop from Xotic PC and from Eurocom with as close to the same options as possible.. there was a $550 difference... I checked again today because of the exchange rate shift since I originally ordered... When I ordered the dollars were on par so it made sense to go with the US, now that the dollars aren't the same I checked back with Eurocom just to see if it was still worth it and as best as I could tell.. it wasn't.

umm have you been following the posts here? It's been mentioned several times (incl the post you just quoted) that Eurocom will price match with XotiC's prices..but you have to call them. That's what it means by pricematching...it doesn't automagically happen on the website quotes.

I called and they were very friendly to me. Obviously, if they are a distributor, they can easily match XoticPC's prices. XoticPC is paid to sell Sager notebooks; they do not even build the computer there. XoticPC makes their money from warranty and excellent future support (and knowledge of the Clevo/Sager products). Whereas, Eurocom makes their money from both support and direct distribution and sales of the Clevo machines.

@ whoever was talking about student discounts

    i didnt know and wasnt told about the student discount from eurocom. i only knew about the 5% tax, which is the government giving us a discount since were students... but it says this on the eurocom site;

    Eurocom Graduate Program
Qualified graduates are eligible to receive a 5% discount off a purchase of the selected EUROCOM notebook or LCD PC models.

Currently, we offer a graduate discount on all regular price models.

The 5% graduate discount has to be approved by Eurocom Corporation before the purchase is made.
The Graduate Program applies only to purchases made directly from Eurocom Corporation.
The Graduate Program cannot be combined with other programs or specials, i.e. Trade In program, Upgrade Specials.

    Graduate Eligibility
Canadian and US residents who graduated in past 2 years from an accredited Canadian or US university, college (two-year program minimum) or high school that is recognized by the Ministry of Education.

    Proof of eligibility
A letter confirming graduation from the school's Registrar's Office.

now what i dont get is why we need a laptop AFTER we graduate... dont we kind of need it when we are in school???? im going to phone next week and ask, since i am in high school now. i dont see why a university student needs a laptop after graduating... it just seems strange.

    huh!??!

    Ontario Taxes = GST+PST = 13%

Xotic PC offers UPS Express shipping to Canada for $110 which will include your brokerage fees

You would want to go with Eurocom especially if you're in Ontario because it will ease the pain of returns/repairs/warranty stuff.

I'm going to have my laptop shipped to my parents in Montreal (Quebec), thus only having to pay the 5% tax

    yes it is 13% - - -
but build a notebook on eurocom and continue all the way through. theres different options to choose from for which taxes you want to get taxed on. i think and am just guessing that the gov/med/edu tax refers to that if you work for the government or medical fields or go to school is canada, then the canadian or ontario government gives you a discount on the taxes.

anyone can back me up on this or am i way off??

I think the 'edu' bracket would be for education professionals like university professors, administrators, teachers, and the likes. It must be some sort of government tax exemption, but i'm sure you'd need to have proof or a tax exemption form or something.

For students, eurocom offers a 5% student discount on the price of your laptop, but you'd still have to pay the full 13% taxes.

Well.. I just called up Eurocom to see what they can do... the guy I spoke to basically said I was better off ordering from the US because Xotic PC was offering the computer at $2104 (US) and plan on shipping them out today/Monday and Eurocom is selling them for 2637-5% student discount=2503.

So the pre tax and pre shipping prices after discounts.
    XoticPC: $2104
    Eurocom: $2503.

The guy at Eurocom said that they don't match prices, but said to E-mail me the configuration from XoticPC and he'll look into it. He also said they aren't getting theirs in the warehouse until the end of next week... whereas Xotic PC has already started burn-ins.

EDIT: The model is the NP8660/ M860TU

Sounds like you didn't get the same people as me, Frank, and the others. Some of their reps do, in fact, match price. The two that worked on my order did.

XoticPC's price after everything is $2,506.21 CAD. So, Eurocom + tax and shipping will be higher. It's up to you on whether you want to deal with the USA or CAD for your warranty.

Keep in mind that I matched a D901C/NP9262.

I called Eurocom yesterday to place my order and the gentleman that I was speaking to said that they would indeed price match, but he himself couldn't do it and that he would have to forward me to another sales rep. The other sales rep wasn't available at the time and I left a message on his voicemail. One of the sales reps is currently out of town and another gentleman is covering for him (the message said). I didn't get a call back and I will call again on Monday.

I pre-ordered Warhammer Online yesterday and I really want my laptop! Ah!
