I'm just exploring some options for possible new notebooks and while I'd mostly like to stick to smaller/lighter notebooks, I am considering the NP8130 in the back of my mind. Really don't wanna be spending $1200 on it though, I'd only spend that kinda money if its thin and light so that it would be practical for me to own and carry around everywhere I go. It looks super beefy but the upside is better cooling and nicer screen. Just a thought since I can't seem to settle on which notebook I want. Anyone anticipate the price going down sometime soon on these? Or if perhaps Clevo is planning on releasing a thinner/lighter model sometime soon?

how'd you find it for $1200? mine is costing $1779
-
XoticPCs base configuration is $1200. I only need a couple minor upgrades, otherwise the base is enough for me.

Damn, thanks Justin. Guess I'll keep waiting for something.

Yeah, you can't beat the price for performance at all. You get a GTX 560m system for < $1200 which is phenomenal.
-
the 560m will pretty much beat out anything that you can get in a 15" from any other brand, except asus, but that will be more expensive, and possibly more bulky.
-
I know this system has great bang for the buck, it would be an incredible deal had it been a smaller laptop. But the size of the laptop is definitely a deal breaker at that price (for me).
-
why don't you get the 5165 it has a 555m and thats thinner, or get a 15zed

The XPS 15z (not the standard XPS 15) is a poorly built, overheating notebook that's not worth the silicon it's built with. -
sshhhh that was plant... to make him get the 8130

I've heard some of the horror stories on the 15z.
Plus it's been out like a month and the outlet is already flooded with them, leaning towards the rumors being true.
just saw your post, lol. -

This makes no sense to me. Thin and light laptops are called netbooks and cost $300.
This is a high performance laptop that is remarkably compact for it's power. You will never get a thin and light notebook with a powerful GPU because the cooling system is large and heavy (copper construction) for any high end GPU.
What you wish for does not exist and cannot exist given current technology for the long forseeable future because of the high TDP and heat dissipation required of high end GPUs.
If you want thin and light, you're going to have to settle for Sandy Bridge IGP/AMD Fusion or something like a 550M which is like your 330M. Way less performance despite the deceptive name. -
Just to clarify, I'm not in search of an ultraportable with a crazy dedicated GPU. I'm just fine with a smaller notebook and a 540-550, I don't need anything as powerful as the NP8130. Hence the hesitation in the price, since its really not what I'm looking for but hey if its cheap enough I'd buy it and trade the portability for a bigger laptop with more power.
-
look for a used one if u want that, in the nbr market
-
Lol if your not looking for that kinda power don't buy it. Simple.
As for the price going down you can't really know until new Gpu's are released because thats the most expensive component in the computer -
All i can think off is Alienware MX14 but with the 555m, it a rip off.
-
Definitely thought about it, but with the ridiculous price inflation on these systems + tax it's hard to justify it.

Then why not look at the other Sager models? NP5165 has a 555M and is ~$800 or NP3250 for ~$700. Both models support Optimus so you can use the IGP when not gaming.
How portable is portable for you? I actually find the 8130 very portable. It's much smaller than other notebooks in it's class (Alienware M15x, Asus G53). I measured them and it's like 2 inches less wide and has much less bulky dimensions overall (Alienware has bulges and is thicker everywhere, Asus is fat & sloped at the back at a much more extreme angle). -
My ideal size is about 14", my current CW is perfect in terms of mobility. I carry my notebook around almost every day, don't wanna be lugging around a huge 15.6" machine. I've had a 15.4" notebook before and it was way too big for me.
-
I'd also recommend the NP 5165...it definitely felt alot leaner than my 15.4" dv5t HP laptop and was a whole pound.
It's a lightweight for its class -
Thinking about it. Does it run really cool/quiet?
I think it's silly that the same exact upgrades on the 5165 cost much MORE than the 8130 (ie the glare type gamut screen for $95 on a 5165, same screen on a 8130 is $30, RAM costs a lot more even just for the 6GB, etc) -

Which notebook was that? I carry my notebook around with my every day as well and this one is no problem for me. The key is not to use the strap on a notebook bag. Hold it by the handles. If this is too much for you, then get a proper notebook backpack with ergonomic support. -
It was a Sager, don't remember the model right now. The issue isn't carrying it, of course I can physically carry it in a backpack or bag. The issue is convenience, and whipping out a giant notebook at Starbucks or in class simply isn't convenient for me.

I understand. I actually use an 11" netbook for that. Combined with a 12 cell battery from ebay, it has 9 hours of battery life and it is actually more pleasant to use than my 8130 because the resolution is decent for the screen size and not 1920x1080 on a 15.6" screen that makes me squint.
I would not recommend a Sager unless you have a power outlet at your destination because 3-4 hours is the most you could hope for and that's with low brightness. -
Yeah, a similarlly equipped NP5165 is within $100 of the NP8130. If the NP5165 came with an 8-cell battery and got like 6 hours of battery life, then I could see the justification if you need battery life. But as-is the NP8130 gets about 3 hours and the NP5165 about 4. So you don't gain a whole lot.

Yeah, the NP5185 supports optimus but the battery is so such smaller that you don't really get much more battery life at all. -
I considered the NP5165 because I really want more battery life but also ability to game on occasion. But the battery life just isn't there. I also ordered a HP DV6z which you can get 6+ hours of battery with the 9-cell, and cost me only about $825. It's got the AMD Llano CPU though.
Anyone anticipate price of Sager NP8130 going down anytime soon?
