I am in total regret. Not like it's eating me alive but seriously, what the heck. I was very mad to find that the 9800m GT in my NP5796 performs the same as a 9800m GTS in cheaper Sager models.
Now, on top of it, there is the NP5793 for sale for $1200 for a similar configuration as mine listed below but WITH 4Gb RAM and 1900 x 1200 resolution screen.
I payed $1985 for mine below. Curse my DDR3 RAM and my 9800m GT that don't mean crap.
-
I bought my 5793 a year ago for $2500, I did regret it. Not because of the performance, but the design. ie. someone brain damaged put all the ports on the right hand side. If you are still within 30 days of return period, return it, before it's too late.
-
can someone please sticky these threads in one place? Call it the disappointment thread.
$2000 is generally too much money to spend on an upgradeable gaming machine.
Regardless, it's just money, right? you'll make more and live, move on. -
Naw I bought this thing a while ago.
-
You need to measure your investment in terms of enjoyment(how much did you get out of the machine), not the monetary value-
That's why I've resolved to spend no more than $1600 for any laptop. I figure the best I can resell it for is 1200-1400, a year from now, depending on demand- -
I'm returning my 5797, basically I can build a superior desktop, repair my existing laptop, and have some money left over to put toward my guitar fund. Main thing that axed it for me was the keyboard, and customer service.
So um, yeah, consider what you're going to do with it and that 30 day from ship date period. -
I don't regret buying my 5796 anymore ;-P
-
The thing I regret about is the keyboard...feels hell uncomfortable to use compared to my old laptops keyboard...also the speakers suck
-

Does Sager use the same keyboard in their other laptops? What was the exact problem with the keyboard?
-
The keyboard feels cheap compare to MBP and thinkpad.
-
For me, you could read the review on it, but the keys have to be depressed deeper than what I'm used to, there's keyboard flex up the whazoo, and the keys are stiff enough to be causing me finger joint pain.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Jesus, how hard are you pressing the keys?
-
It's not a matter of how hard, it's a matter of resistance.
I've got boney thin and long fingers, which don't appreciate the extra strain. The keyboard was flexed since day one, as well as the space bar being warped.
Yes the laptop has all the performance and a nice screen, but when I can return it, refurb another laptop and hand build a more powerful desktop, buy my guitar, and still have $ left over... it's a rather obvious choice. -
... such as a weird and warped keyboard. -
I know Gophn, but I've spent enough time mulling over it (ala my review) to know I'd rather try it my way.
The keyboards as we've talked about, are the same. I could have swapped the D901C board with this one and tested it, but this is a design flaw with the tray.
If Clevo takes some of my advice to heart as Donald forwarded on (which I realize how likely them doing anything is) then maybe within a generation or two I'll come back to a 579x or it's successor by then. -
hmm... that kinda sucks if you are experiencing that.
I have been using the same keyboard for over 3 years now, no flex, very comfortable. -
Cut up your laptop into parts and make more money off of it
Sell me your motherboard and GPU kthx -
If I had buyers, and the price exceeded the amount I paid for it, it would indeed be logical to do that.
-
-
True, but let's hyopothetically say that someone bought it off me tomorrow for the price I paid for it, and they took care of shipping.
Since I wouldn't have to take care of shipping back to Sager then, I'd be better off. I'm a very literal, black and white sort of person.
...and no I'm not a zebra. -

I find the keyboard very confortable to use and I like the strong resistance from the keys. I haven't typed on a laptop keyboard this good since my old Thinkpad 385. If I can rock my Fender J for hours and pump out 20 fingertip pushups every morning, than anyone can type on a Chicony keyboard with speed and finesse.
-
I'm disappointed with mine because I was promised Quad Core support when I purchased it, then all the sudden, was told it would not support quads. Balls.
-
Soviet - I think it's greatly dependent on how your fingers are built.
For example, my father has meaty strong fingers whereas I've got thin long fingers.
He doesn't mind the keyboard because he's used "keyboards" since the
days of the mechanical typewriter, so naturally he "punches" the key harder.
The 9262 also has a much better support plate without so many holes in it.
I'm more of a laptop keyboard guy, and don't even like desktop keyboards due to the higher resistance on each stroke. So there's your difference. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
My fingers are long and thin just like yours, JGZinv. There are a good range of USB keyboards that have a light stroke; my friend's Logitech has a very smooth tactile stroke comparable to notebook keyboards.
My implication was that you will get used to it over a few weeks. Your fingers will eventually adapt to your keyboard and get stronger over time. Just as how my father's fingers have with the piano and my fingers with my bass. -
I purchased a 5797 beginning of february (P9600 cpu, the 9800GTX 1GB card, 4GB). Overall, the laptop seems fine. HOWEVER... i have had a few issues that have made me question if it's really worth the price, as well as unresponsive tech support (compared to the "big" PC makers, such as Dell... and yes, even tho their support can be annoying, they DO reply to all emails at least!).
Not trying to bash XoticPC... overall, nice folks there. But i have had a couple emails basically ignored after my purchase... and the main tech issues i have are:
(1) the loud freakin fan (I live in a large 2-story loft with my girlfriend, and she can be upstairs trying to sleep while i'm working when she blurts out "Get ready for takeoff, all engines go!" as the fan pipes up and sounds like an airplane getting ready to take off... it can be insanely LOUD, and i'm NOT doing intensive graphics at the time... just browsing and programming);
(2) twice, the machine just froze... i had to force a reboot via the power button. Since then, the webcam will not work no matter how many times i re-install the driver for it, etc. Do a search on the web, and this is not uncommon for the Bison webcam on the Sager. And the online help forums with Sager/XoticPC are NOT very helpful, and i've emailed re: it too. Basically, they tell me to re-install windows. Hmmm... Sager tech support DID call me, and he was very nice, and tried to help... but ultimately, it didnt help. SO... gonna try clean installing Win 7 on it tonite. Been using Vista Ultimate.
(3) The power button... doesnt always work(!) It seems i have to press it twice or three times before it registers the press. Not a big deal, as it ultimately works... but strange how you have to hit it "the right way". Again, ultimately it works and isnt a problem... but was disconcerting when i first got it.
Again, not a basher here, just real experience and my feedback with it over the last several weeks. The screen is nice (1920 x 1200), tho it could be brighter. The keyboard.... eh, it's fine. I've had better, but it's fine overall. Doesnt bother my fingers.
SO... do i want to return it? If the Win 7 install tonite fixes the webcam issue, and no other weird freeze ups, then no--it's a very good machine that has some quirks. Is it worth the $2800 i paid? Eh... if it lasts a good 18 months or 2 years before i trade it in for another one, sure. If it continues to have quirky hangs and/or webcam breakage, then clearly not worth it
Oh... and bummed the new graphics card came out just a week or two after i got my laptop. But that's just dumb bad timing -
Are you sure it's not just that you're not holding the power button down long enough?
-
Hmmm... on previous machines, I click the power button and it just works
There has never been a "hold it down for a second or more" requirement. It just seems a little "mushy"... any other device i have (iphone, other laptops, computers) have a very snappy response when you press the power button, and there's no need to mush it around to help make contact in there.
-
FYI the NP 5793 has been on sale for quite a while. Though they actually finally stopped selling them. But now you can get a NP8662 for just a small bit more than what the NP 5793 was running for which is nice.
-
Hey all--needless to say, Justin was concerned about the support issue i brought up. SO... lemme address that a bit.
First, Justin has always been VERY responsive if i've emailed him directly (and i emailed him several times when i was purchasing my laptop back in february). He also was very helpful in answering questions re: the spec/options for my laptop.
My biggest concern was really with emails that went out to their general "support/sales" email addresses after i puchased the machine. Granted, part of the reason i was emailing them was re: webcam/hard drive issues i had after two forced reboots due to machine hangs (and my Outlook folder was corrupted by the reboot), so MAYBE i missed one or two of their responses due to the corrupt file...?
Regardless, I stand by the other "feature" issues i brought up re: the laptop. As long as Justin is directly emailed, you should expect great supportThe webcam no longer working IS very frustrating, and i have not experienced anything similar to that on any of my other non-Sager machines (i.e. being unable to get a device to work anymore after a machine hang, even if i uninstall and re-install the drivers)... but maybe it's just bad luck/timing with this new machine. Plus, the hard drive corrupting my Outlook Folder... well, that tends to put you in a bad mood re: your laptop
Ultimately--I stand by my mini/quick review of: the laptop is great when it's working. Is it worth the $2800? I guess... probably, as long as it all worksRight now, i'm being forced to clean re-install Windows because i am unable to get the cam fixed, and i'm still a bit concerned the two freezes/hangs weren't just flukes on this laptop. I hope i'm wrong. The webcam worked great when it worked... but it seems to be particularly troublesome according to some threads i've found, and i'm still not sure why multiple drivers are included on the one Drivers CD included with the machine (Sager rep had me install one of the three drivers based on which cam was installed on my laptop, which we had to open the machine to confirm...)--alas, it still didnt work.
Here's hoping Windows 7 RC plays nice on my 5797... -
could't you just do a small system restore after the hang-up? Maybe date it back to the day prior of this occurrence. I have done this in the past when things like this happend, and fixed the problem. Hope everything works out for you...
-
Yep--tried doing a system restore to a date before... it pretended to work, but then failed with an error message amounting to "Windows failed to restore your system". Gotta love it.
-
Soviet - I'd be interested in hearing what model of Logitech that keyboard was if you have it handy.
Webur - yeah you have to hold the power button down for about a 3 count before it does anything. I've had other systems that did this so it wasn't much of a bugger with me.
If someone upstairs can hear you laptop, there might be something else funky going on. I couldn't hear mine outside of the 20x20 room it was usually in. Might I suggest checking your temps, or for dust, even perhaps seeing if the fans are set to full blast rather than auto? -

If my memory serves me right, I think my friend's keyboard was an older diNovo model. His fingers are like sledgehammers so I think his keyboard was already broken in when I used it a few years back. You can try a few of the newer Logitech keyboards at Best Buy or similar stores.
Personally, my fingers fell in love with the new generation Das keyboards. They're a bit pricey, but they feel just like the old IBM Model M's. -
2) I got nothing for you..
3) Slow your roll...Press the button longer
(On to me)
I love my laptop (5796) I honestly played with 20+ laptops from different stores and I think the keyboard is great on mine, maybe a couple IBMs here or there was a little quieter and i liked that, but over all I didnt see much difference..
My only complaint is the price difference, I bought mine September 08, and I can a 5797 with quad support (was also told 5796 would have quad and then it didnt) and better GFX card for about 1k less then what I paid..That bothers me..
Oh and the fact that the power cord pops out every gosh darn minute (though i have read there is recall/fix for this, but have not taken advantage of that yet..That's my fault not sagers/xotic pc's) -
I hear ya on the price difference... i received mine this year around Feb. 14, and the same machine with the new 280M graphics card is $300 cheaper than mine (with the 9800GTX)... suckage.
That's what ya get in the fast (for now) lane... -
Yea the power button is annoying. Sometimes I have to press it for 4 seconds before anything happens at all...Why is this? I've never experienced this on other systems...It's kinda weird, makes me wonder if something is wrong..
-
If it's the same as the 5793, then you need to hold it for ~1sec when plugged in, and ~3sec if on battery
-
Anyone else reget buying NP5796?
