Wondering how many of you are going to install Windows 8 tonight. Now that many of us ironed out our 7970m driver issues, I'm guessing early adopters will be few in number. Not to mention that I've read nothing indicating that gamers would even want to ever move on from Windows 7. Have you read otherwise? Are you bravely venturing onward?

One of the guys over this way says he gets better performance in games in Win 8 than any other OS. Isn't even considering switching back. I personally will probably wait a little while but just thought I'd share since he's not here on NBR.

I'll put it on a partition, but keep Win7 on another partition, at least for a while. As long as I don't hit any major driver or program compatability issues, I'll probably primarily use 8. I've used the preview versions a bit, and once I figured out where some menus & tools where moved to, it worked fine.

I can't really think of any reason for me to make the switch. Perfectly happy with Win7.

He plays a multitude of games (I'd ask but I'm afraid I'll get an itemized list that will have no relevance to the question asked) but mainly BF3. He's completely switched over to Win 8 though so I imagine he's tried quite a number of them.

Edit: I've heard him mention playing Skyrim and D3 on it as well.

I must admit that I haven't really researched it, so I had the impression that Windows 8 basically just amounted to "And now for tablets!" plus a spiffy new task manager. It's great that Microsoft have changed some of the back-end stuff as well.

I have W8 on my Current Laptop and for a desktop system or I should say non touch screen system metro UI is pointless. Granted I am on the Release Preview, Metro App integration with the OS sucks. This is something that may or may not be fixed in the RC version.

Only reason I kept W8 on this laptop was because I had installed all my Apps on it and did not want to reformat.

There was supposed to be some Desktop Interface for W8 but I don't hear anything about it now so I guess its non existent.

There is too much shortcutting and hot points in the OS were before it was a simple point and click in W7.

Windows 7 is what I am staying with.

Since Microsoft has been offering the upgrade to 8 Pro for $15 for a while i bet a lot of people will actually be taking advantage of it. Then you gotta install it just to see what its like.

Since I run a technology consulting firm I have to be up to date on everything that is going on.

I have Windows 8 on a few laptops for a while. While I don't mind the Metro interface it is not quite as efficient as I would hope for a desktop. Great for a tablet. However it is not hard to get a replacement and only use it when you want to. When using two monitors it is not bad at all and Microsoft finally handles multi-monitor setups properly.

For people that are not as technical I found somethings a bit confusing on where to go. Microsoft is really trying to hide somethings and make them more automated. However I think it causes too much pain.

Overall I do like it since I am not forced use the Metro interface (yes I know they renamed it).

Performance wise there is actually a gain across the board. Tom's hardware did a test and I was able to replicate it.

Vista used around 800-900Mb of Ram just for the OS
Windows 7 cut that in half around 420Mb
Windows 8 again cut that nearly in half and hovers around 275Mb

That is pretty amazing, I am a Linux guy by nature and it seems what used to be slim in memory use (Linux) is going up and what used to be fat (MS) is going down. Kind of funny actually.

Overall I think Microsoft will have trouble at first just because if the drastic change to the UI and the fact that Windows 7 is a damn good OS. What I see happening is people getting the tablets (x86 or RT) and using them. Once they get used to the interface then they will want it more on the desktop/laptop. Power Users it will be a different story, that could be a much slower adoption rate.

Personally I like it, but probably would not have upgraded just to upgrade. That said no problems so far at all.

I tried the RTM version before and it looks great. However, I had problems intalling the drivers and decided to wait until clevo releases new drivers for it. If those performance increases are true then I'll definitely move to it. I dont care about the UI changes, I just want it to work smoothly

I have to say that originally I was quite skeptical about W8 - I mean it looks like it's been designed purely with tablets and touch-screens in mind. However, when you dig a little deeper, it's clear to see that there have been some major changes under the hood - a lot of which seem to be for the better, especially for gaming.

Many users report Higher FPS on identical spec machines, quicker load times, faster boot times and best of all a much lower RAM usage rate from the OS itself. What's not to like? Granted, it will take a bit of getting used to, but if Microsoft are making moves to make things prettier and faster, while reducing system resources - then surely it's a leap in the right direction??

Improvement is minimal and it's based the drivers. Best performance comes from the driver level and not the OS. I'm sure Anandtech or TomsHardware or someone (or me) will do a comparison Win 7 to Win 8 performance given same drivers.

I hear these claims, but haven't seen any solid numbers published by anyone. Placebo perhaps?

Last time I tried Win 8 on my Sager the drivers were a mess. Hopefully they've improved that. I am planning on installing Win 8 on a separate SSD for comparison purposes and hope to delve into gaming performance between the two. When I'll have the time, I don't know yet. But there's no point until drivers get sorted out.

It's not going to be a huge jump. I'd venture a guess at maybe 2-3 FPS difference but I haven't personally tested it to verify.

Downloaded Win8 this morning & installed it in place of my Win8 Preview version. I still have Win7 on another partition just in case.

So far I've found one hiccup: I can't install Quickbooks Pro 2010. A quick internet search shows that no version of Quickbooks is currently considered compatible (including 2013). Intuit has said a patch will be made to make 2013 compatible, but haven't given an ETA for it.

I'm still ironing out drivers, so we'll see how that goes.

I have just installed Windows 8 on my Clevo P170 and everything works. Drivers, games etc, - I haven't had problems so far!
However, I think Windows 8 is a bit confusing because there are a lot of new features. E.g. an application store, and I can't see the advantages of it yet.

    Cheers.

Where's the Windows 8 drivers? Clevo's site only has Win 7 still. And Win 8 isn't anywhere nearly as good as Win 7 was out of the box with supporting drivers.

edit: Nevermind, Sager has them... on a dropbox account, lol.

It says one of the USB 3.0 drivers is not compatible. Not sure what to think.

"Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver
Uninstall this app now because it isn't compatible with Windows 8."
