The NP8130 will support 1600mhz RAM if you have a cpu that will support it (2720 or higher) and it has to be JEDEC memory. The NP8130 will only support 2 DIMM's at 1600mhz. At this time 4x DIMM slots of 1600mhz isnt supported.

The other type of memory is Intel XMP which is not supported on the NP8130 at 1600mhz

Any word on why only 2 slots support 1600? Just wondering.

It’s an Intel specification (and JEDEC Spec), in simple terms when you add more modules it slows down the timing. With 2 modules the electrical signals will maintain the proper integrity at 1600MHz, but with 4 it cannot.

The Patriot looks like it will work, if you click on the details tab it shows "JEDEC Compliant" on the bottom. The Kingston does not list this.

Thanks for the quick reply. I really want the Kingston one because the shinny heat spreaders... Here is the datasheet for it

By the way I am a xoticpc customer thank you also.

Data sheet looks like it will work. When we upgrade computers to 1600mhz we also use Kingston.

I was reading through the manual and found this:

**Note: 1600 MHz Memory Modules are
only supported by Quad-Core CPUs (i7-
    2920XM, i7-2820QM & i7-2720QM) to a
    maximum of two 2GB SO-DIMMs.

I'm assuming the NP8130, NP8150 and NP8170 all have the same RAM support. Is that right?

If we wanted to max out at 16GB, would these work?
    G.SKILL F3-8500CL7S-4GBSQ

BTW, I'm really glad I found this thread because I was gonna order 4 sticks of 1600MHz RAM and be upset when only two sticks worked! Thanks for the info, Hutsady.

AnakiMana, those models have the same RAM support except the NP8170. That model can support 1600mhz in all 4 DIMM slots when using Intel XMP.

The RAM you have linked will work if you wanna max on to 16GB on these models but its 1066mhz, find some 1333mhz instead.

Yea I already order 1600mhz RAM but it doesnt won't because it was intel XMP.

I'm assuming you already 8GB 1333mhz if you brought from a reseller, so you just need to order another 8GB. Use Kingston I know it will work. I read in the forum someone trying using another brand and they did not work.

I'm thinking about buying the Patriot since its in stock. But I like Kingston.

I read that 1600mhz will work on the 2630QM (in the Alienware though) if you change something in the bios? Would it be different from AW to Sager?

This morning I ordered 16GB of the Kingston HyperX 1600mhz for my NP8170 with i7-2720QM. My RAM will get here way before the computer does.

8GB of that won't work (only 2 DIMMs work) so I guess you'll have to return half of it. Am I wrong?

Dave3, i cant say 100% for sure that the Alienware will not support 1600mhz as i don't know them that well. I can say for sure that Intel only list 1066/1333 as being supported on the 2630. Once you get to the 2720 then it also list 1600.

The NP8170 will support 16gb of 1600mhz as long as it the Intel XMP type instead of JEDEC. You will be able to achieve 1600 by using Intel Extreme Tuning.

Isn't the best 7.9? Still very nice score, my score is 7.6 with 16 GB.

Well 16GB is overkill for me because I never reach to that amount of usage. I do not have that many programs open or run VM ware. So 8GB at fast speed is more suitable for me. I think the most I hit is 5GB of usage. 7.9 is the fastest. Someone was able to get 7.9 with kingston 1600mhz on a alienware but the kingston didnt work on my sager.

Hey, Joseph, are you using the kingston XMP 1600mhz 8GB kit? Because my NP8170 sometimes cannot boot up with 1600 profile, I have to use 1333 profile now.

Hi, Hutsady, so you mean you guys have tested Kingston XMP 1600Mhz 2x4GB kit on NP8170 and it works fine? I can also set to 1600Mhz profile using Intel XTU, and the following reboot will also work without problem, but once I shut down for a while, SOMETIMES I cannot boot up again. I have to run at 1333mhz low latency profile now.

First of all is your CPU processor i7 2720QM or greater? If not the CPU will not utilize the ram speed properly.

I also brought the Kingston xmp at first but it didnt work for at 1600mhz at all since my chipset doesnt support intel XTU. So I couldnt even tune it.

The KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX by default runs at 1333mhz which is program at the SPD. So if you want to run it at 1600mhz u need intel xtu

If you buy the KHX1600C9S3K2/8G I beileve by default it runs at 1600mhz. Does not require intel xtu. Should work out the box
(notice in the part number the difference is a letter X)

Right now I am using Patriot PSD38G1600SK which by default runs at 1600mhz. So I recommend this one. I have not use the other kingston I wanted too but they were sold out and very pricey.

I was able to return my kingston ram back with free shipping return since i told them that their website told me the ram runs at 1600mhz out of the box but it doesnt, it require intel xtu. So I told them, they shouldnt sell it as 1600mhz but as 1333mhz and can be at 1600mhz with intel xtu.

Catan the Patriot PSD38G1600SK should work if you have i7 2720QM. I havent test it on the i7 2630QM. If your feeling lucky go for the Kingston KHX1600C9S3K2/8G. I wanted that one but it was sold out. Make sure you buy the right part numbers.

Also I believe as of now the HM65 chipset can only support 2 slot at 1600mhz. I haven't brought more...

Thank you for your answer. My system is 2920XM with HM67 so I can use XTU to run at 1600Mhz. But it seems that BIOS does not fully support it. I will wait for reply from Hutsady@Xoticpc to confirm what is happening becasue according to his reply in this thread they have tested XMP 1600mhz in my kind of system.

    Hey

Yea plug-n-play kits will work, along with Patriot 1600 as thats JEDEC standard. 1866 will also work as long as its plug and play.
