I've heard small rumors about Sager/Clevo looking into a backlit keyboard. It's by far a deal breaker for me not to have one, having had one for a few years now.

I've seen many users think that a laptop's screen lights the keyboard adequately - it doesn't for me. :) At night the screen is bright enough that you can't distinguish keys easily (brightness of screen vs brightness of reflected light on keyboard - eyes are tuned to the bright light). It really is a whole different experience having a lit keyboard and I can't pull the trigger on an otherwise fantastic 8150 until Clevo/Resellers offer some option for this. I actually ran into this the other night working on a friend's non-backlit laptop and finding it a frustrating experience.

Hoping to hear some more concrete news that someone is working on an option. :)

The simple answer is no. Sager/Clevo laptops just dont get backlit keyboards and anything you hear is purely just the dreams of wishy washy people like us. Neither they nor any 3rd parties have said there will be one.

And trust me, if Sager/Clevo would go against there own tradition of no backlit keyboards, they and their resellers would make a big announcement about it.

I just love backlit like you but the rest of the laptop's specs just over shadowed any lack of backlit keys in my NP8150.

That's completely true but i still have my faith that one day they gonna make some steps towards backlit keyboards! you can't deny the fact that you would gladly accept this innovation :D

I honestly don't understand why in 2011 they don't put backlit keyboard at least as an option. It's not a deal breaker but I just find it stupid. Aren't they suppose to make some of the best gaming laptops?

Last time I checked we like to game when lights are dim not in plain sunlight.

Clevo should really do TWO things ASAP to ALL of their models.

    1) Back lit keyboard
    2) Good speakers

I agree with both of these, but, really, at what cost to us does that option come?

I don think I have needed to look at my keyboard while typing in years....That's what playing mmo's and typing college papers gets you I guess.

I don't need to either (former superhardcore WoW player, and still 'student' here), but it's a matter of convenience. I can't feel my way around new keyboards so instinctively for much more then typing. If I wanted to disable WiFi or something in the dark, I'd be hardpressed to do it.

Also, even if I'm not intentionally looking at the keyboard while typing, my WPM drops and error rate rises in the dark.

What about quitting smoking/drinking instead of finding cancer drugs?

lol that argument doesn't stand for the general population. But I wish everyone could do that.

I hate that argument. I'm a touch typist 80+ wpm, but when I'm playing games or in a certain app where I need to make sure I press the right key or key combo it's nice to be able to see the keys. I also switch between a few keyboards regularly so slight differences can screw you up for special key placements too.

Back on topic, last I heard a couple months ago ETA was November 2011 for a backlit. However, I doubt it will be backwards compatible as I'm sure there won't be the proper power plug for the keyboard. I'm sure someone can whip up some voodoo to make it work, but for me unless it's simple plug and play I'm not risking botching my nice laptop.

the speakers and keyboard quality on my new clevo are quite good imho.
backlit kb's are nice but not necessary. it would be good to have option for one though.

Yeah, I'm already sticking out for the GT 555m Sager, and that's the longest I'm waiting. November 2011 or not, I'll get by without the backlight.

Maybe if Clevo included a slightly-closer-to-standard layout, it wouldn't be an issue, eh? In any case, backlit keyboards are more or less standard nowadays. Not including them just makes the competitors, such as the Alienware M18x/M14x, all that more enticing. It's simply good business practice, at this point, to put a backlit closer-to-standard layout on their systems.
