    I have a Sager NP9170 with a Geforce 670M card.

Native res on the laptop is 1920x180.

It has a DVI out, but for whatever reason it only wants to use the built in Intel graphics chipset to hook up to an external monitor. The device maxes out at 1680x1050.

If I disable the Intel graphics, the option to hook up a second monitor disappears from what I can tell.

Basically, is there any way I can use my 27" LCD, at native res, with my laptop?

The dvi is single link only. Try the hdmi or dp.

I had this issue with the NP9170 as well, I had to use a Displayport to Dual link DVI Active Converter to get 2560x1440 working.

I don't think that HDMI signals can be converted to dual link.

I think they can, but only the latest hdmi 1.4a or something, which sager doesnt have. Could you point me towards such a displayport to dvi cable, I have been looking for one too...

Yes the displayport tends to be the go to connection for more exotic displays be it for resolution or refresh rate and give you the easiest/best results.

Active ones have chips inside that can draw too much power from the connector since logic has to convert the signal.

For such high end work I believe they all will.

You should be looking exclusively for the ones with a usb cable as only an active adapter can convert the single link display of the displayport to the dual link DVI signal required to push resolutions as high as 2560x1600

It may work if you turn down the refresh rate.

It's not single link, it's more to do with the required clock signals of the DVI port.

Sorry, you are correct, then again a monitor with a displayport built in will work fine on the P170EM.
