Anyone using both HDD in optical bay and an internal optical drive?

I've finally decided to make the switch to a Sager/Clevo system and like the idea of getting an optical drive, but also buying the HDD caddy so that I can swap in a 2nd HDD for a majority of the time and then put in the optical if I want to watch a DVD or Blu-ray.

Anyone else doing this or is it a waste of time/money? Would I be better of just buying an external drive? For those that have the drive caddy or optical drive is it easy and fast to remove? (i.e. do i need a screw driver or is it almost like a hot swappable type setup?)

Thanks in advance for the advise!

It's not going to be convenient. You'll have to have a screwdriver to open the hdd bay on the bottom to remove the screw holding the drive in place (every time you wanted access). You could leave that screw out, but there would be nothing holding the drive in place.

You're better off getting an external enclosure for your optical drive if you still want to use it.

Thanks for the quick reply. It's better to find that out now than to be frustrated later after spending extra money.

You can leave the screw out if you want... The bay it self stays in there unless you physically pull it out (as does the OD). The hardest thing is removing the optical drive, there is no place to grab on to when removing it other than the door (?) itself...

You could just have it come with an optical bay hard drive caddy and pick up an external dvdrw drive for like $20 or external blu-ray for like $130 or so. It would probably be a little bit less of a hassle.

As everyone has mentioned, that caddy is not designed for hot-swapping between the two. In these situations, I always recommend either getting an external enclosure for the hard drive or the optical drive (in most cases the optical since it will be used less) so you can just use one externally. That way, you're not constantly switching it out or having to change that bezel around.

I bought an external enclosure for my dvd drive and it works flawlessly. Only about $14 with shipping from Amazon.

I also just bought an external enclosure for my DVD drive and it seems to be the best option as you tend to use it less frequently than you would an external hard drive.

I bought it off ebay for around 13$ with shipping and all you do is connect the drive inside the case, change the faceplate (if you want) and then it is a fully functioning USB external DVD drive for cheap.

    Best of luck!

Thanks everyone. I think I'll go with the external enclosure idea for the optical drive.
