I seem to find that Sager, Clevo, XMG, Schenker, and Origin are all selling the same laptop. The only difference I see is the lid design. Is this common? If so, are there any differences between the companies, or are they all selling the exact same product? I'm a bit confused here.

Any help in figuring out this mess would be great. Thanks!

They buy the shell from Clevo, put the parts in, and then they sell it under their own brand. Kinda like how you'll identical mice/RAM/PSUs sold under different brands, but they all come from the same OEM.

There are Sager resellers like XoticPC and LPC-Digital that don't carry any product, they just manage the sale of the laptop that is shipped from Sager and deal with any warranty issues on your behalf. Sagers are just Clevo shells with their own custom BIOS and assemble components with it, also provide the warranty.

Then there are Clevo builders like Mythlogic who buy the Clevo shells themselves and build them, sell them, and warranty them. They are also more likely to do custom mods and offer more personalized service, although they typically cost more. Some Clevo builders do offer custom lids unique to their company too.

Otherwise they are identical as far as components go, same weight, same power requirements, etc.

I can personally recommend LPC Digital, they have offered excellent service and pricing. XoticPC is also a good reseller as well and have used them in the past also. Mythlogic is a great Clevo builder and has received accolades from users here that purchased a machine through them. I've visited their shop personally since they're somewhat local (1 hr from home, ~ 30 minutes from work) and good group of guys. I only didn't buy from them because their costs are usually a little higher, and being in state I have to pay the extra 6% sales tax.

Yeah I spec a P170EM from DigitalStorm and did the same config with OriginPC and it ended costing about $600 more :-( I love how they try to say there different the Alienware yet they are now charging more for a similar spec laptop as the M17x and M18x
