That’s why you post your own pictures, now I know exactly what to expect Thursday when I snatch mine from my uncle as soon as he walks off the plane. Those pictures show that the orange trim does not have that glow look to it, like it does when looking at that notebook on some sites (like the picture at the beginning of your review). That really looks sharp, and you’re one lucky fellow! Thanks for posting those pictures! Are those aluminum vents on the side of the notebook detachable? I’m thinking of taking mine off and painting them high gloss black.

    EDIT: Grills/Sides

those are actually the speakers and they look pretty set in place. although it would look pretty sweet painted black.

You might want to lean the laptop down a little bit off the cooler so the fans and vents match.

Great review but... I have one question for you. You said you'd be going to college with this notebook, do think think it's too bulky/heavy or irritating to carry around or is it pretty manageable? I'm thinking about getting a 17" over 15.4" when I get mine because I like the bigger screen size/number pad/cooling mostly, but I want to figure out if a 17" is worth carrying around a college.

it probably will be a bit annoying to carry but I have to deal with it. I wanted 17 and wouldn't settle for 15. I guess we'll see when the time comes. I could do some practice laps with it just to see. I still don't have a backpack for it yet. just the bag it came with. which looks okay but not a lot of support.

IF your going for a high end gaming 15" laptop then size and weight wont be to different. The Alienware and 8660 are about 1" shorter in length and .8" shorter in depth and 1lb less.

Well with a big enough backpack (Swiss gear do nice backpacks for notebooks and fit with 17'' screens) it's gonna be not that big of a deal to carry around. Put 8lbs of books in a backpack... you'll see

Okay sorry to bring this up from the grave but just wanted everyone to know that I added a 3DMARK vantage benchmark using the PhysX driver installed. Performance was much better where PhysX mattered and it boosted the score enormously. Obviously only UT3 would show this in game but I don't have that game so sorry no benchmark there.

Did it help your 3dmark06 score at all?

i noticed only a small change in 3DMark 06 but I think that is due to the fact that I switched drivers as well. went to 177.83 instead of 177.41 or something like that. It was a tiny amount like 50points or something. Vantage definitely used PhysX to its full potential which makes me agree that the score is now biased. But if PhysX does add this kind of performance in real world situations then its up to ATI to step it up and bring something better. which apparently in the desktop world they now have.

Fan noise isnt bad at all. If you go into a library you would be fine with silent mode.

Nice review Auburncoast! I finally decided to get this over the M860TU and I have one question because I ordered from Xoticpc also: do you mean you received your laptop 2 days after they informed you it was in phase 2? That's wicked fast if I'm understanding you right.
Thanks again for the great review, it helped with my decision :).

Your shipping would be mainly based on your proximity from sager which is in the city of industrial in CA to you house and which shipping you choose. The only thing that should be a major player in your decision is how fast it goes from phase 1 to 2.
