A friend brought me a M570RU which stubbornly refuses to play sound via external speakers. When I plug in a pair of speakers or headphones into the green jack, the built-in speakers shut off as they should but there is no sound from the external speakers.
I`ve updated Realtek`s drivers and the peculiar thing is that there is no green jack in Realtek HD Audio Manager`s Audio I/O tab. Only the black one (which should be 5.1 rear speakers) lights up when something is connected to either the physical green or black jack.
There isnt anymore software-related to try besides RMA-ing the beast?

Broken audio jack. Seems more and more common. Mine is still broken as of October last year . Bought an external USB sound card to fix it, because I am in Europe and I couldn`t ship it back.Call your reseller first, just to make sure, but I`d bet it`s a hardware issue...
-
i think there is some ExpressCard audio card solution ? Because i have the same problem with my Clevo :S
-
The green jack is very bad. Through Realtek, change the Audio to the microphoen jack, thats what I did and it solved the problem

I was running 5.1 from my x540 system through the 3 analog jacks, but last week I was getting up and I snagged the wire and broke my blue plug, so I have to run it as quadraphonic now, pisses me off.
Does anyone know how much an audio jack repair would cost? -
You can use the other jacks for the headphone if you must, but the volume on them is ridiculousely LOW, so I would advice not.
An Express Card would still not work since the sound would still go through the regular audio jack.
My sollution : Creative USB sound Card Live 24bit : awesome choice: great volume, great control, good clarity, good bass and awesome system manager. Paired with XP and it rocks! -
Mines are working with no probs since October...
And I tell you, almost 8 months of not extreme but frequent use, because I use headphones on work and my 5.1 Cambridge MegaWorks on home...
But I agree, the 3 sound sockets used by Clevo appear not be good quality... even an cheap 75$ motherboard have gold plated sockets for better conductivity and therefore better sound with less background noise. But Clevo's ones not, just plain white metal, and on eye view appear to me that they are made of aluminum(cheap, cheap, cheap...).
My sugestion is grab yourself a needle and try pull the jack contacts up(to the center) for better contact between the jack and the socket.
If that didn't work, and if you have some welding skills, just take the board off, remove the broken socket and weld a new one. -
You see, that`s not something suggested. When I talked to XoticPC about this, they said they have to replace the whole motherboard for it.
That is just ridiculous, they should make the damn thing detachable somehow.
Welding a new one is not a smart idea, warranty area is gray or quite red actually.
Better get hte USB sound card, cheap and MUCH better than onboard sound. You`ll be surprised. -

thats just the thing though, the sockets will be attached to the motherboard at factory level
although a skilled and steady soldering hand will be able to replace the actual jacks, which are very likely standard issue ones, that you can buy in many electronics stores, (I really must take my laptop apart and have a look)
I havent had any problems with my audio outputs as yet, but I do think they feel a little too flimsy! -
no it can be repaired. i used to repair circuit boards all the time in my job.. you at i would bet the majority of the problem is due to poor soldering at the joint where the jack is soldered to the board. we used to see this a TON on automotive amplifiers at the rca jacks till the industry realized it and shaped up, well not all brands. but even rockford and the original old soundstream (not the new power acoustik owned company) had issues and they fixed this. i still see this a lot but mainly from the rca cable ends pulling around on the ends from things like a improperly mounted amp or someone pulls to hard etc.. we fix them all the time. if i remember the backside of the jacks can be just seen from inside with the bottom off. you may be able to shine a light in there and plug in a set of headphones to the jack and GENTLY move it around a bit BEING CAREFUL of course not to move it to hard. you are simply looking to see if the posts have lifted off the mobo or the solder has cracked.
mine are still fine as of now, but im awaiting it one day and know ill have to pull the bottom housing off to resolder it.. no biggie imo to do it though.
i know if i end up taking it apart im going to make sure to reinforce the connections and make sure they are soldered properly to not come apart again -
I'm satisfied with the overall quality of the Realtek ALC 883 chipset, good quality sound with headphones. But with speakers, specially with an high fidelity ones(>100dB noise to ratio) there is some background noise.
With the X-Fi I will get 104dB 20kHz Low-pass filter, same as my Audigy 2 ZS Plat Pro that I have on my desktop. I think that I will gain some FPS too, 2/3 FPS more on Crysis will be nice.
But the drivers, Creative is very bad on that field, specialy with the Vista x64 drivers... -
the express card supposedly runs much better in vista over the external usb card. It's odd though that it requires 512 mb of ram, if its actually using all of that it seems like a hog .
that's part of the reason I held back so far, but I may end up getting it soon anyway. The sound on 5793 isn't that bad but you can tell it needs a bit of a boost in the music department, its just not as full sounding as a desktop card, though thats expected with any laptop. And headphone users, check the box for headphone virtualization in the sound manager, it helps a lot! -
... speak of the devil..my friend just called me and said his headphoine jack stopped working. he is going to bring it down here saturday for me. ill open it up and see what is wrong and if its a solder job or not. i know i looked on mine when i had it open but i honestly cant remember if i could get to it with just the bottom cover off or not. otherwise we'll have to pull off the bottom of his case. it was kind of funny i said you know we were just talking about that online and i said how i never had issues .. i said guess i better knock on some wood here...lol

Man, you people must be rough with your laptops. How the heck can you break the headphone jack?
Also, don't bother messing around with expresscard Audio, just use the SPDIF output with an external decoder. -
Get the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook. It's an ExpressCard/54 and fits into the slot on the right side of your machine.
Not only does it sound better than the Realtek, it also does some of the number-crunching on it's own DSP so you get slightly better performance.
You should be able to get one from about 58 euro. -
If you use SPDIF with an external decoder, as I do, the sound will be excellent and you won't be carrying around lots of cables, cards and other added bulk. -
how is an external decoder not added cables and bulk?
-
I don`t know much about Express slot sound cards but if they have a separate audio jack it`s fine.
I opted for the USB sound card since it`s just 50$. -
The X-Fi extreme audio notebook has its own jacks and if you want analog surround (up to 7.1) you can get a breakout module - it has optical 7.1 already built in
-
Could you take a picture of yours sitting inside the laptop? I`m trying to see how much of an overhang it has.
-
Here ya go eleron
Yeah, i know, my desk's a bit cluttered...The breakout module usually sits behind the comp I just thought you might want to see that as well -
So it is a bit overextending.
Granted it takes less space than mine, but it would bother me a lot, since I have the mouse set up on the right.I`ll take a pic tomorrow.
And then you`ll see cluttered -
OK
Go to the windows bar and open HD manager.
THen click on device advanced settings. Then click tiw up all decives. Then click on the little folder icon and click open dialog box when a device is plugged. Then insert the headphones in the pink mic jack. A dialog box should open. Select headphones. It works PERFECTLY for me. -
Dude, the volume that way is totally messed up. In the mic jack it`s distorted and nasty,in the other jack is waaaaay to low.

Heh... I do have the Creative 24bit external; it got it for use with my old ZD8000, but when I got the Sager I was pleasantly surprised I could configure the plugs as 5.1.... totally forgot I had it... but a bummer cause all my USBs are used up... VX Nano dongle, Firewire(data)+USB(power) for 2.5" HD enclosure(old notebook HD), 160GB Maxtor One Touch, Logitech RumblePad 2... all holes filled like a Chinese hooker. Tried to use my USB hub but I need to buy a powered one because the externals won't get enough power.
WHEN WILL NOTEBOOKS COME WITH 8 SEPARATELY POWERED USB PORTS?!
Bah, I'll just have to rotate External HDs... -
I noticed that not all the USB ports have the same ammount of power.I use the top one on the back for a 4USB hub to adapt my USB sound card, wireless keyboard, camera and phone, the one below it for my mouse, the one on the right, back for a USB hard drive and the one in the front for the USB cordless mouse
.
Lol , I`m USBless -

And this consumes more than 1Ampere(600mA + 500ma + 200mA). -
When this problem occurs, is it the connectermetal in the jacks that breaks or what is it ??
It just cant be right that it is doomed to break by plugging/unplugging a few times.. Is it "hard" use of the jacks that breaks them. Ie. bad soldering and a little "puffing" to the inserted jack, makes them break?
Anyway, I really hope they have reworked this with the newer M570RU-U's or with newer bordreversion, so if it needs to be changed, it will be more durable in future.
Edit:
Just saw that even people with the M570RU-U's got problems aswell... Why make a high-end lappy with such stuppid mistakes/misdesign?... Really makes me wonder... -
Mine died after several plugging in/out. When my brother goes to sleep , I used the headphones, and unplugged them whenever he wasn`t sleeping.
SO one day it just died.
So I take it there are at least 3 sollutions now :
1)buy a cheap USB sound card,like mine : Creative Live 24 bit
2)buy a more expensive Xtreme express audio card with headphone outputs!
3)re-weld the thing or another jack where the dead older one was. -
Think that the 3rd option will be the one for me then, as I dont like the huge thing sticking out the side of the lappy
Hope to hear what the problem is when it occurs, as if its bad soldering, it could be "countered" by opening the lappy and tape/fasted the jacks properly before it will break -
ill be looking at it this weekend.. i may be able to match up a better jack to solder in there instead something a bit more durable. we'll see
