BIOS considerations for upgrading P157SM CPU and GPU

I've been reading this forum a lot lately and have learned so much, so to start I'd like to thank you all for your contributions.

I have a Metabox P157SM with a i7-4800MQ and GTX 780m, running stock American Megatrends 1.03.01 BIOS. I have ordered an i7-4930MX and a GTX 1070, and I am not sure what issues I will run into by having or not having Prema's unlocked BIOS/vBIOS.

Will the stock BIOS be able to recognise the 4930MX once I plug it in, or is Prema's BIOS required for that? The 4930MX is supposed to be 'unlocked', so even with stock BIOS I should be able to adjust its voltage, current limit and clock multiplier, is this correct?

Similarly for the GPU - the 780M's voltages are locked, but I have read that the 1070 can be undervolted in MSI Afterburner, as well as some small amount of overclocking. Assuming this is all I want, is it true that after I replace the 780M with the 1070 and boot into Windows that I should just be able to download the latest NVIDIA drivers and be good to go from there? I've read on these forums that Prema's V2 BIOS is indeed for putting 10xx series cards into the P157SM, but that is only for unlocking the extra features right?

What card did you order?

You can use intel xtu to control the settings on the extreme edition.

 

Thanks Meaker. The Graphics card I ordered is this Dell GTX 1070.

EDIT: Another consideration I just realised I'm not sure if I need Prema BIOS for - Being able to set the TDP of the CPU and GPU so that they don't power limit throttle. I upgraded my 180W charger to a 230W charger to supply enough power to the new components, but I'm not sure if they will draw the power they need unless I change their TDP. Do I need Prema's BIOS to let me do that?

 

do not purchase the 4940mx or 4930mx.

Stick with your 4800MQ and use the unlocked bins you have. You can undervolt etc. on it.
The reason why I tell you not to get those CPU's for your notebook is because your notebook actually has severe problems holding the CPU stable. You won't get much fast the clockspeed you can achieve with your current CPU, not due to thermals but due to very bad VRM.

The GPU came up lately and nobody knows if its working or not. If it should work, please keep us updated, since we are all interested in knowing if it works or not.

 

Here's an update on my P157SM upgrades, which aren't going so well unfortunately

1. GPU - I inserted the Dell GTX 1070 into my laptop. Here is an imgur link of the GPU-Z reading: https://imgur.com/a/GNCbK5Q

My computer reads it as "Microsoft Display Adapter" instead of GTX 1070, states "Unknown" for BIOS version, 0 Mhz for GPU clocks etc... but it does detect that the GPU is GP104 with 7200M transistors. That is all I managed to capture before my laptop started to beep loudly while the 3 lock lights (Num lock, Caps lock, Scroll lock) would flash until eventually the laptop shut down (much like the behaviour described in the TechInferno thread here). Reading that thread, one possibility is that the GPU is overheating but I'm not certain. The fans are working properly. I didn't solder a copper shim onto my heatsink yet because I thought the temperature should be not so terrible just at complete idle, and because if the 1070 doesn't work for whatever reason I need to be able to re-insert my GTX 780M easily.

As Prema resolves in the linked TechInferno thread, another possibility is that my BIOS is not able to read the GPU temp, which causes the beeping/shutdown behaviour. Additionally, I've also read elsewhere on these forums that the P157SM needs Prema BIOS V2 (the version 2 enabling the ability to detect GTX 10XX cards).

2. CPU - I already ordered the 4930MX before I created this thread so I couldn't take the advice to stick with my 4800MQ. I still would like to try the CPU in my laptop anyway even if it doesn't end up clocking to better than my 4800MQ. Again, similar problem - I have read on these forums that since the 4930MX wasn't released when my BIOS was made, it has no support for the 4930MX and I need an updated BIOS to use the 4930MX. I haven't actually inserted the CPU yet to try because I think it will fail.

3. RAM - I ordered an extra 2x8GB Crucial DDR3L-1600MHz sticks to go with my old Kingston sticks (same specs). The new Crucial sticks don't run at the 1600MHz frequency. Task Manager states my RAM now runs at 1333MHz (see this imgur album), because the Crucial sticks can only run up to JEDEC #5 instead of #7 like the Kingston ones can. My BIOS does not let me configure any RAM speed settings. Sad times

All in all - I'm quite sure I desperately need to upgrade my BIOS. I bought my P157SM from Metabox, which is an official Prema partner, but when I emailed them they simply replied "Sorry, we don't have that BIOS available". Another user on these forums also indicated that Metabox does not make Prema's BIOS available to their customers. I thought being a Prema partner meant that they would? I sent Prema a message here a few days ago, but I know he's busy so I can't expect a response for quite a while. Not sure what to do. Any help, tips, comments etc would be appreciated. Thanks.

 

Have you used modified inf drivers for the gpu?

 

he cant because of EC panic which shuts his notebook down in around 15 seconds.
