    Hello all

    Well for the past couple of months my beautiful 5793 has been getting random crashes. I don't really know what is causing this... (could Vista be this unstable maybe a switch to XP?). Most crashes are during not intensive activities (word processing, surfing the web) Nothing is overclocked... Any solutions would be helpful!

    * Check Event Viewer for errors

    * Look in Device Manager for any hardware device w/ an error

    * Run a Windows Update

    Yeah, check the System log in event viewer.

    And see if there is a Minidump folder in the Windows directory, and upload the .dmp files in it.

    In Event Viewer look for errors in Red. In Device Manager look for a yellow exclamation mark...the Operating System will expand the section w/ the error automatically, so you don't have to go through any of the sections here...if you don't see a yellow sign as soon as you enter Device Manger then you're good there.

    As Makaveli72 said, look for items flagged in red. Also, look for events that were logged immediately before, or immediately after, the BSOD, including informational logs and warning logs as well as errors, because these are likely to be related to the cause of the BSOD. Once you open a particular log entry, there should be a link to click on that will take you to a Microsoft page that might give you some more useful info about the cause of the error (no promises, though, sometimes all they do is restate the obvious).

    Shutdown the laptop and remove the battery.
    Reseat the RAM module(s).
    Start the laptop and run memtest.

    If problem still exists, test RAM modules 1 at a time (if you have 2).

    I remember I experienced random BSOD after updating the video drivers to 175 but it was fixed with 179. So maybe updating some drivers can help you

    Im thinking that ill prolly just do a fresh install of XP. Vista is nice but the BSOD is kinda a deal breaker and i have never had that problem with XP. So if it happens again i think I will be making the switch.
