I can't find any information regarding backlit keyboards for the Sager laptops...

yet being 2011 they have to have them, correct?

I mean with all else being what it is in the laptop industry, its an extremely common option: backlitkeyboard. that all the other manufactures "playing" in the field have...

so if they do not, for whatever reason, have a factory offered backlit keyboard... do any of their specialized re-builders offer one as their custom add ons? (like it some will swap out particular screens etc)

I would like to purchase one, but can not see myself buying a new higher end laptop without a back lit keyboard. (which yes, I find myself using all the time.)

    TIA!

I am the opposite I find back lit keyboards to be a feature that just adds to the cost of the machine that I prefer to not pay for. Even if I was to turn it off the knowledge that I was still forced to pay for it would be in the back of my mind eating away at my soul.

well, jeez... that's with most anything in life brother. except there are some people out there that actually enjoy having * available for them regardless of whether they will ever personally use it or not. I am not necessarily one of them.

I use my backlit keyboard A LOT.

in the dark... I don't want to tilt the monitor down to see what keys I'm hitting. and while I am a fairly adequate typist by touch, that is only when I am tying plain english and not performing that many other tasks that may be required of me to perform in the dark.

so I really need that flippin back lit keyboard.

    not an option. :/

    YOU FOLLOWING ME Sager/Clevo?

you are excluding many who would otherwise enjoy purchasing your products.

ah, there is no way to accurately predict which new features a mfgr adds to a product will increase consumer prices. For gawd sakes man, look at HDD prices over the years! 1985, 20MB for $850. today, 500GB for $89. get it??

why not use a USB flashlight ? it would solve some problems.. (i know there are cases where this does not work too)

if i knew a thing or 2 about eletricity and had some cash for parts i thin you can DYI this..

actually I have a rather nice flexible usb light... you can also plug it into a usb power adapter wall wart which came in a package. and I do use it for this on my netbook which didnt have backlit option. but this is a bit of a ghetto fix for a $2k laptop. and not all that worthy in actual use I'm afraid... I will give you credit for the suggestion though.

and I cant take away from the actual light I do use... comes in handy for all kinds of situations. (Middle Atlantic LT-GN USB Gooseneck LED Light)

Backlit keyboard on any high end gaming laptop is a requirement for. This is why i went with alienware m18x instead of x7200.....and i have been with since 2005.

I consider a backlit keyboard a must have on laptops. I don't use it to look at the keyboard directly, but it helps illuminate the typing area when I'm in a dark room so I can make sure my hands are in the right area.

I only need WASD, my trusty mouse and maybe a couple more buttons when i play games, i bought a proper mechanical keyboard for long typing sessions. ;D
But still would not hurt to at least have an option, am i right?

Actually, just recently I have typing problems in the dark for my reports...and it's a pain sometimes to squint and find the keys. I'm a pretty good typer but sometimes I misplace my fingers on the wrong keys and that kinda bugs me, having to back track a few letters a number of times...

There are other, although not as "cool" alternatives to a backlit keyboard... I bought a USB flexible light as well and it does a nice job. It even helps minimize the strain on my eyes when I use my laptop in the dark. So not having a backlit keyboard is not a deal breaker for me- it's just an added bonus.

My previous post was just meant to show that as much as you like back lit keyboards there are people like me who absolutely despise them even if I am the only person my rage knows no limits!

I don't even look at the keys when typing at all. Even if I did my keyboard has no lettering on it. The only thing I need is the two bumps on F and J to tell me where home row is.

ya alienware has had backlite keyboards for years, but like Mac books they are theft magnets. also they are too flashy for me. i love my p150hm although a backlite would be nice its just one more thing to raise the price. if anything they need to invest in better materials, suriously we pay 2k for a plastic laptop, wheres the special metal that all the other companies have.

I find a backlit keyboard a nice feature but not a must have... anyway I bought a clevo notebook because they had the most bang for the buck clevo doesnt really invest in looks.

a backlit keyboard would be very nice though

While backlit keyboards are nice and cool...this I will agree too....

It's not good for your eyes to work in the dark! It's even worse when you are looking at a screen of sorts (LCD, Plasma, OLED, whatever), so don't do it! Not unless you want to lose your eyesight or at least strain your pupils.

There was a display of Clevos running prototype Ivy Bridges, and it had a white backlit keyboard, similar to a MacBook, looked really good. Hopefully they put the backlit keyboards into the new Ivy Bridge Clevos that will be released this year.

The Saitek is a bad membrane keyboard with membrane keys and some novelty capacitive touch sensors. Very cheap feeling plastic and bad key travel all around.

My suggestion for a mainstream and easily findable at retail backlit keyboard is a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate backlit mechanical keyboard with Cherry Blue mechanical key switches.

Not necessarily. Not everyone has the best eyes, and even with backlight from the LCD monitor it can be hard for some people who do not know the keyboard layout to see the keys. They do have some use, although for the most part in gaming laptops they are used for flashiness, which is something Clevos aren't really known for :D

Agreed. I'm still debating on whether or not I would've invested in the backlit keyboard for my notebook, (if it was ever offered).

My brother has the dv3z with a backlit keyboard. He rarely uses it though. But it looks pretty snazzy. :p

They are rumored to be released late this year or early next year with the new Ivy Bridge chipset from Intel.

    Learn the Layout?

so in the dark i have to be counting keys and guessing where is the right key in relation to other references and waste about a minute or 2 being "blind" instead of just looking down and knowing because you don't think it's necessary for YOUR pc?

some people like me are bad typists and despite the fact that i actually code and the fact that i work writing on the pc every 5 days a week for 5h a day.. i do need a backlit KB to work/game/whatever at night as i often travel in the dark with the laptop or do it at home (although i shouldn't because of eye strain) and i find myself looking down to find keys..
i don't like it because it's flashy or not, i hate aw design( love the asus G'x'3 design or the Sony VAIO S or Z) but i really need lit keys...

Needs to play around with Swype texting a bit. I found using that for a bit removed any lingering doubts as to where keys were; it leaves a decent amount of room, though, for heading the wrong direction to a key now and again.
Never really seen a backlit keyboard, but I, personally, loved the fact that I wasn't paying for any extra silly lights or flashing on this laptop. If the Alienware was the same price point as the Nyx/8170/Satori I might have gone with it, simply for the potential level of service Dell can offer with the next day on site. The lights? Most likely would have ended up turned off.

A lot of people don't even realize that there ARE ridges on the F and J keys so you can find home row by touch. I find that as long as I can find home row, I can find any keys I need by touch (including WASD).

Touch typing still tends to be a rare skill :(

I really don't understand the drive behind backlit keyboards, once you know how to touch type you never look at the keyboard anyway? Maybe there should be an exact opposite option to have totally blank keyboard similar to the Das Keyboard ultimate ;)

IMO a backlit keyboard makes more sense than painting arrows on the WASD keys. Come on, my 4 1/2 yr old is already hooked on WOW and knows what the WASD keys do.

I would like a backlit keyboard, but even more so I want Clevo to drop the weird 3 column number pad and use a standard full size numpad like other laptops.

Edit: 95% of the time I touch type, but alot of the time I'm sitting in bed next to the wife while she sleeps finishing a report for work so a backlit keyboard would be nice for seeing those special characters that I don't use enough to have their location memorized.

Clevo just needs to go the route with keyboards, that they have with everything else about the systems... allow customization, we're all so particular.

Me personally, I wish they'd throw away the number pad all together, and go back to generously spaced, easy to find, full-size arrow keys, and dedicated page up/down/home/end keys. Makes programming a hell of a lot easier.

I always have liked the "classic Dell" laptop keyboard layout:
