The only thing the NP5793 doesn't have compared to its Dell/Alienware competitors is a beautiful backlit keyboard. Are there any third party manufacturers that would make one of these?

    nope, notebook keyboards are proprietary.

If the ODM does not make or design a backlit for a notebook, then it does not exist.

You have to mod it yourself (very difficult and timely) or get a USB backlit keyboard (much easier).

My DJ friend modded his Clevo notebook with mini black lights on the LCD case that points at the keyboard... which the letters light up nicely in the dark in the blacklight's rays. :)

USB keyboard is the best and smartest way.
A friend has one and it`s so cool...

I was thinking since my notebook is out of warranty, I would try to mod it to have a keyboard that is lit up in the dark.

I think my friend said that UV LEDs are the easiest mods to make (for a notebook) to have a black keyboard with white letters light up at night.

And UV LEDs are cool to detect fraudulent documents and use for pest inspections. :)

I still don't understand the purpose of a black-lit keyboard other than being able to say, "Hey look at my cool laptop, it has a back-lit keyboard. Gravel in the wake of my awesomeness!" :D

No, if you`re in a dark room, or you want to type easier in the dark, that`s the main purpose.
    Bragging rights come also :)

Yeah, the screen brightness on max is enough for me to see all the keys clearly even in a pitch black room!

I am used to using my Clevo keyboard in the dark, so its not important for me to have a backlit keyboard since it might be very distracting... I think its mainly for showing off.

Clevo gaming notebooks are meant to be sleek and professional "sleepers" that are packed with raw power without the need to show off with cheap aesthetics mods.

    .... and a better price tag. :D

now come on everyone, what on earth is wrong with having a BEAST that you an show off with fancy lights?

There is no need at all for a practical solution for led keyboards.
they are there to look cool, bring out the hidden trekkie in the owner.

its a mod I am considering once my warranty runs out
especially since I think I need to return this to have the tvout looked at

as notebooks become more and more popular spare parts are going to become more popular, 3rd parties are going to start to look at markets they can provide for
and eventually soon hopefully there will be a nice online store that sells modding stuff for notebooks.

    :)

BINGO! I only use my machine in the dark for one purpose: gaming and videos. If I have to look at my keys to be able to play, well lets just say, I don't need to look at my keys to play. I also think a lighted keyboard would be quite distracting. However, the black-light idea does sound pretty cool; cooler than just lighted keys, and less intrusive.

there is a new blacklight led that has come out orriginally made for pubs. they are VERY TINY! I sell them in my lighting shop. those might be the same things he used. did they come on a strip? i think i could mod a case for the lights, i would just like some guidance as to how to connect them to the power.

    Just FYI:

There's a write-up here on how to backlight a keyboard using an LED and optical fibre, and a Japanese-language HOWTO for a blue-light version (I don't think K-Mart got in on this one :D ). Another DIY version can be found here.

These are all old projects, though, so I don't think they use the new miniature LEDs Heliosvector was referring to.

EDIT: At first I thought this was a fruit-cake idea, but I'm definitely warming up to it since frequently use my laptop in the morning, before the Sun's up, and cannot turn on lights 'cause everyone else is still asleep; the light from the screen itself makes it almost impossible to type unless I turn the screen so it shines onto the keyboard, at which point I can barely see the screen itself. Having a second light source under the keyboard that emphasized the location of the keys for me would probably make morning typing immeasureably easier. Once I can take this vaio offline as my primary, I think I'm going to experiment with some basic backlighting on it. :D
