I am aware that current models dont have a backlit keyboard but I have heard upcoming models will have this feature. Does anyone know when these new models will be available to purchase. That is my only hang up with sager/clevo models. I want my next laptop to have this feature. Waiting for the right mix of specs and features in agonizing lol. Thanks in advance.

Hopefully they'll make an individual upgrade for all the laptops to swap the keyboard for backlit ones too

This is extremely unlikely as they'd need to make it possible to power the backlit keyboards, and there just isn't a power supply port on the current motherboards to do that. It would be nice, but odds are they'll have to design in a way to power backlit models.

Are they waiting for the new ivy bridge chips to introduce these models? I'm not familiar with how often sager/clevo refreshes their laptop designs.

They could be. It is too early for us to get a pulse on this. We do know they have been testing backlit keyboards for several months now. :)

Could it be possible for the more tech savvy owners to maybe sacrifice a USB slot to power a backlit keyboard if Sager / Clevo just keeps the same keyboard layout?
I dont see myself doing this yet as i want to keep my warranty but once it ends i might break out the soldering iron and play MacGyver. lol

Yeah, you should figure out how to hook up a backlit keyboard to the gpu fan power plug-in on the motherboard (you'd hook up both, of course, somehow) so that your keyboard glows brighter the more intense you game. :p

The lack of a backlit keyyboard is the biggest complaint i have with my laptop. I find that i do miss it.

Well I knew the Keyboards from Clevo were not backlit so I ordered this:

    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WfpfwtXXXBM?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WfpfwtXXXBM?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width='560' height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

A Logitech Unboxing: Logitech Wireless Illuminated Keyboard K800 - YouTube

*the sandwich was completely unnecessary xD~~

I checked on Bestbuy and Microcenter and it was 100 USD and 120 USD respectively so I went to Amazon.com and got it for 74 USD with free shipping and no tax =D

Now, I rest assured about the Keyboard on my Laptop ^^ (when it arrives).

Just to make the answer to this thread clear, Sager will have back-lit keyboard on Select next generation models. ;)

Hopefully they change the keyboard layout on the next gen high-end laptops.

    This =)

It will be nice if they separate the arrows from the numeric pad, it sux to have the "right arrow" where the 0 should be! =p

Most definitely. Didn't they have a demo model with our current chipset running a backlit keyboard? I am sure it will play out like this:

    1) Backlit keyboard released with Ivy Bridge

    2) A couple of months later, they figure out how to retrofit backlit keyboards for the rest of us. =)

Unless they redesign the 17" keyboards to ACTUALLY be a 17" keyboard instead of a 15" keyboard that just goes in the 17"... you know, full numpad and all.
From a personal standpoint, I feel that for me, a backlit keyboard would just be a "for show" type of thing that looks cool... I never need to look at my keyboard to type(even in the dark, all I need to do is feel for the tabs on F and J).

That's the thing though, if the demand for it is high then that will be their priority instead of a keyboard layout overhaul.

The real question is will they be available before I give up waiting and buy something else? I saw the backlit models mentioned in june/july and here it is sept and still nothing. If they wait for ivybridge, they will most likely miss my sale because that isnt due out until next apr-july. That makes me sad lol

There was a video posted a while back and it had the next gen prototypes with backlit keyboards ... so they are definitely coming. Not having it was a serious compromise I had to make ... in the end it came down to price unfortunately.

They seriously need to fix the numpad though. I can't get over the placement of the delete key. It should be in the upper right ... bothers me a lot. :) And the lack of dedicated page up and down keys...

It is looking that way. Unless the P270 miraculously has a backlit keyboard, Ivy Bridge is the best bet. It was good that they showed them off early, as it made people wait even longer, like you. :p Seriously though, I wouldn't expect them any sooner than Ivy Bridge. :(
